HISTORY

The subject was originally incorporated in the name of "Ericsson Telecom India Private Limited" on March 12, 1992.  Subsequently, the name has been changed to "Ericsson Telecommunications Private Limited" March 11, 1993 the word "Private" deleted on July 1, 1995.  The name has been further changed to “Ericsson India Private Limited” w.e.f. May 21, 2001.

BUSINESS GROWTH

The dynamics of the Indian Telecom market has changed during the year 2003.  Mobile Communication has become a service, not only for the rich and upper middle class, but also for the masses.  Mobile call became as cheap as the fixed calls and the growth in number of subscribers and traffic per subscriber exceeded all expectations.  Limited mobility finally became full mobility and they have in India a competitive market in mobile service, which is volume driven and based on both GSM & CDMA technology.

During the year the company received significant orders in Phase II & III from BSNL both for expansion of the existing networks in Northern & Eastern India amounting to Rs.2961 Million and for new networks in the States of Jammu & Kashmir, Assam, North East & Kolkata amounting to Rs.1368 Million.

TECHNOLOGY ABSORPTION

Technology Imported to Manufacturing Digital Telephone Exchanges, Installation and Commission network for GSM system has been absorbed by the Company.

COLLABORATOR

M/s Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson, Er. Telecom AB, Sweden

Year of Imported Tech.:  1994-95

Subject imports Telecommunication Products and accessories.

Subject exports telecommunication equipments, digital telephone exchanges.

Ericsson has been associated with the Indian telecommunications industry for almost a century. Way back in 1903, the company supplied its first product to India - manual switchboards to the government. Since then, Ericsson has contributed in just about every facet of telecommunications in India.

From basic telephony, intelligent networks, datacom and the most advanced telecom integration and services to mobile office applications and multimedia communications, Ericsson offers a complete spectrum of telecom solutions in India.

The National Telecom Policy 1999, popularly known as NTP 99 was an important landmark when prudent policy decisions really took Indian telecom, specially cellular telephony on a growth trajectory. The mobile subscriber base has already crossed the 36 million mark and has been growing over 140% year on year for the last few years. Cellular telephony has also moved from the metros to suburban cities of the country. This is a healthy sign for the industry, as there is a huge potential in this segment.

BUSINESS ACTIVITIES

Ericsson has played a major role in spreading the cellular revolution in the country. With 39 out of 74 operational GSM mobile system networks supplied by Ericsson in India, the company today has a market share of over 43 per cent in terms of connected subscribers, more than the sum of the market shares of it's next two competitors, establishing it as the leading mobile systems and services company in the country.

On the new business front Ericsson has bagged CDMA wireless infrastructure contract from Tata Teleservices for their networks in two states and core switching systems in six circles.

Ericsson's GSM equipment supports cellular services in license areas of Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Bihar, Assam, Orissa, Punjab and the North East. Ericsson is present across the entire cellular footprint of India.

 ERICSSON MOBILITY WORLD

Ericsson is investing in developing Mobile Internet solutions to foster the growth of Mobile Internet in India. As part of the global initiative, Ericsson has set up the "Ericsson Mobility World" in New Delhi. The center provides a platform with state-of-art facilities and resources for the development of Mobile Internet applications and solutions. The center provides access to a dedicated global pool of expertise, and helps test Mobile Internet solutions and provide up-to-date information on the worldwide development in the area of Mobile Internet. Ericsson Mobility World is partnering with various Mobile Internet solution developers, software vendors, content providers, Internet solution providers, Internet hosting companies and systems integrators. The facility includes a dedicated developer's area, presentation and testing areas, equipped with latest equipment and technology. The cellular operators in India are currently investing in infrastructure to migrate to GPRS technology, which allows high-speed connectivity.

SWITCHING & FIXED NETWORKS

Not just cellular alone, Ericsson is also active on the other aspects of Indian telecom landscape. More than 60 per cent switches at VSNL are from Ericsson. Our digital switching systems handle over 75 per cent of the international calls made through VSNL gateway. Ericsson has also installed over 1.3 million fixed lines in India on the BSNL and MTNL networks. Ericsson also supplies equipment to the Indian Railways and Defence as well.

Ericsson is also the sole supplier of AXE-based Trans-local switches for carrying Reliance's backbone traffic.

IP AND DATACOM

Ericsson has also emerged strongly in the area of IP and Datacom, having bagged 11 of 15 circle wide orders from BSNL, based on Tigris multi service access platform. The 11 states are; Punjab, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh - East, Uttar Pradesh -West, Orissa, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and West Bengal.

Ericsson in India has designed, built and optimised more networks in the country than any other company. The company supports the operator networks round the clock with a team of highly competent experts, state-of-art tools, methods and processes. Services such as consulting and competence development aimed towards operators have also been provided to our customers in India. To cater to the growing pre-paid and value added services market such as MMS, Unified Messaging, etc.; Ericsson has built competence locally to integrate and support these VAS.

Jaipur Factory is the latest in an important series of 'Localization Moves' by Ericsson involving the transfer of the technologies. The then CEO of Ericsson Mr. Lars Ramqvist inaugurated this manufacturing unit in 1995. The unit covers the total land area of 81000 square meters with a built- up area of 5610 sqm.

Factory came in operation for the assembly of wire-line Equipment such as AXE Digital Switching System as Local Exchange (LE) for the use in the Indian Telecommunication Network such as BSNL and MTNL, and also for exports to international markets. Factory supplies included Wire line transmission products, Digital Transit Exchange (TE), U-Mux for Railways, Splicers to DoT, Power & Transmission equipments, ISP Products etc. Other significant supplies included Data network (DNIP) equipments in 17 States (13 telecom circles) of India, Digital Trunk Exchanges (DTAX) supply with a volume of more than 500KC to Government Operators and 10KC to Reliance.
