NEW RELEASE

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows created publishing history worldwide today on the first day of its release.

In India too, Harry Potter cast its charm like never before. The eagerly anticipated seventh and final book in the series which was released nationwide by 6.30 a.m. has sold an estimated 170,000 copies in the first 12 hours breaking the record set by its predecessor Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (which sold around 100,000 copies on the day of release).

The release: Amidst the tightest and most thorough security arrangements ever that saw simultaneous delivery into over 300 locations, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows went on sale in every city in India by 6.30 am on Saturday. Many bookstores opened early, some overnight, to meet the huge demand for the first copies, and eager Potter fans, young and old, thronged bookshops from well before the on-sale time. Crossword Kemps Corner, Mumbai reported a waiting queue of over 700 fans in the first half hour of sale and the Chennai and Bangalore outlets of Landmark reported similar numbers. The Landmark stores in Chennai had over 500 people, queuing up from midnight in their eagerness to get their hands on the last adventure. Many other retailers across the country also reported similar muggle mania!

First Day sales: Penguin India, the exclusive distributors for the book in India, saw advance orders climbing from 230,000 to 252,000 on the night before the release (in comparison, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, the record holder till now, had registered a total order for around 160,000 copies). The release of the book witnessed an unprecedented rush by readers to pick up copies and read the long-awaited series finale.

On its very first day of sale in India, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows has clocked an unbelievable 170,000 copies in sales, within the first 12 hours, breaking all previous records.

Thomas Abraham, CEO and President, Penguin Books India said, “This is absolutely amazing. Never before have bookstores recorded such sales. It’s been a hectic lead up to release with complex logistics and spoiler leaks in the US, but in the end, we’re delighted that it’s readers who have won and the magic of Harry Potter is being enjoyed the way it should be.”

Aniyan Nair, Marketing Head of the Crossword chain said: “We’re absolutely amazed and delighted with the response. There were serpentine queues of eager readers outside all our stores throughout the country! Our stores all over have reported fabulous sales on day one.”

Hemu Subramaniam, CEO Landmark said “In all my experience in book retailing, never have I seen a phenomenon like this, and I’m not sure we’ll see one in a long time to come.”

Pottermania grips the nation like never before this weekend, as hundreds of thousands of readers across the country welcome the teenage wizard into their homes for the final time, and pore over the final adventures of their favourite characters in breathless excitement.

Penguin author Chinua Achebe wins the Man Booker International Prize

13 June 2007: Penguin Books India is delighted to announce that Nigerian writer Chinua Achebe has won the second Man Booker International Prize for 2007.

The Man Booker International Prize, which is worth £60,000, is awarded once every two years to a living author who has published fiction either originally in English, or generally available in translation in the English language. It was first awarded to Albanian writer Ismail Kadaré in 2005.

The 2007 panel of judges was chaired by Professor Elaine Showalter and consisted of writer and novelist, Nadine Gordimer and writer and academic Colm Tóibín.

Achebe is best known for his first novel, Things Fall Apart (Penguin UK), written in 1958, and Anthills of the Savannah (also Penguin UK), published more than 30 years later, but his work includes more than 20 books, including novels, short stories, essays and collections of poetry.

Achebe beat an impressive list of contenders, which this year also included Margaret Atwood, John Banville, Peter Carey, Don DeLillo, Doris Lessing, Ian McEwan, Michael Ondaatje and Philip Roth.

‘It was 50 years ago this year that I began writing my first novel, Things Fall Apart. It is wonderful to hear that my peers have looked at the body of work I have put together in the last 50 years and judged it deserving of this important recognition. I am grateful,’ said the author on receiving the award.

Academic and author Elaine Showalter, who was one of the judges, said: ‘In Things Fall Apart and his other fiction set in Nigeria, Chinua Achebe inaugurated the modern African novel. He also illuminated the path for writers around the world seeking new words and forms for new realities and societies. We honour his literary example and achievements.’

About Chinua Achebe

Chinua Achebe was born in 1930 and educated at the Government College in Umuahia and at the University College of Ibadan, Nigeria. He joined the Nigerian Broadcasting Company in Lagos in 1954 and during 1956 studied broadcasting at the BBC, in London.

A diplomat in the ill-fated Biafran government of 1967-70, Achebe’s work is primarily centred on African politics, the depiction of Africa and Africans in the West, and the intricacies of pre-colonial African culture and civilization, as well as the effects of colonialization on African societies. He wrote Things Fall Apart (1958), partly in response to what he saw

as inaccurate characterizations of Africa and Africans by British authors.

He has lectured at many universities worldwide and is now Charles P Stevenson Jr. Professor of Languages and Literature at Bard College, Annandale, New York State.
