BlackBerry attacks LG’s Black Label
JoongangIlbo & Joins.com:11/09/2007
Research In Motion, the maker of BlackBerry e-mail phones, sued LG Electronics claiming its Black Label mobile phones infringe on the BlackBerry trademark. The LG phones are sold under a name that is “confusingly similar” to the BlackBerry, Research In Motion said in a complaint filed yesterday in federal court in Los Angeles.
Research In Motion seeks a court order barring LG from using the Black Label name and unspecified damages. Research in Motion, based in Waterloo, Ontario, settled a similar trademark dispute in February with Samsung Electronics over Samsung’s BlackJack handsets.
LG Electronics is Asia’s second-largest maker of mobile phones behind Samsung.
Research In Motion said last month it plans to start selling BlackBerry phones this year in China, the world’s largest handset market, as it expands beyond North America.
In addition to the LG Black Label phones, which can be used on any GSM network in the United States, Research In Motion also wants a court order to stop the sale of LG Chocolate handsets that Verizon Wireless sells under the Strawberry and Black Cherry names, according to the complaint. Bloomberg

LG Electronics named Indonesia’s best exporter for two years in a row
Digital Daily :10/26/2007
LG Electronics (www.lge.com) has been designated as Indonesia’s best exporter for two consecutive years following 2006, the company said on the 25th.
LG Electronic Indonesia (LGEIMN) received the best exporter at 2007 Primaniyarta Awards, granted by the President of Indonesia in person.
The Indonesian government grants the awards for both local and foreign-invested companies based on evaluation over seven categories including export records, local sales, technology transfer, social contribution and etc.
LGEIN came in the first place with export records of 1.45 billion dollars in 2006 (1.18 billion dollars for export and 270 million dollars for local sales).
The company also ranked No.1 in terms of electric appliance market share (▲PDP TV 46% ▲home theater 45% ▲audio 24% ▲refrigerator 21% ▲washing machine 17%) as of 2006 thanks to its aggressive marketing campaigns.
Samsung plasmas lose out to LCD’s
JoongangIlbo & Joins.com:10/24/2007
Samsung SDI Company, the world’s second-largest maker of plasma television displays, posted a fourth-straight quarterly loss as competition drove down panel prices. The third-quarter net loss was 103 billion won ($112 million), compared with a profit of 40 billion won a year earlier, Samsung SDI said yesterday.
Sales fell 27 percent to 912.7 billion won.Samsung SDI plans to add customers in the United States and enter more markets, forecasting that demand will rise this quarter and help “stabilize” prices.
The company joins LG Electronics in reporting a loss from plasma panels as they lost market share to liquid-crystal display makers.“We plan to expand our customer base in the U.S.
and enter emerging markets including China in the fourth quarter,” Samsung SDI said in a statement.
The company will also increase sales of larger panels measuring 50 inches or more diagonally.Excluding overseas affiliates, the operating loss, or sales minus the cost of goods sold and administrative expenses, was 117.9 billion won, compared with a profit of 3.5 billion won a year earlier.Sales of LCD televisions will probably jump 86 percent to 78 million units this year, beating the 22-percent growth for plasma televisions, according to estimates by James Kim, an analyst at Lehman Brothers Holdings Incorporated.LG last week reported a third-quarter loss at its display division, which sells plasma panels and TV’s, failing to meet its target to break even during the period because of a delayed recovery in demand.LG, the world’s third-largest maker of plasma displays, predicted the business will break even this quarter.Samsung SDI forecast industry demand for plasma panels will increase 50 percent in the second half from the first six months of the year, and forecast global demand for plasma panels will increase 8.3 percent from the three months ended Sept.

Samsung and LG find
success in new strategies
JoongangIlbo & Joins.com : 04/23/2007
Korea’s top two phone makers Samsung Electronics Co. and LG Electronics Inc.
turned their worsening profitability around for the first quarter, using two opposite strategies.
Samsung let go of some of its high-end marketing, adding models toward the lower end in new markets, while LG concentrated on specific markets, and succeeded in selling phones for higher prices than Samsung in certain parts of Europe. The companies’ strategies were successful, but certainly not original.
Samsung’s plan in going after emerging markets echoed Nokia’s previous strategy, and LG’s focus on the high-end market copied Samsung’s former business model.
In the global market, Nokia is currently No. 1 in terms of sales, followed by Motorola, Samsung, Sony Ericsson and LG.Samsung’s first quarter phone sales went up 30 percent on a quarterly basis and 6 percent compared to the previous year, achieving a record quarterly high of 34.8 million units.
Revenue went down 1 percent, because the phones in new markets such as China, South America and Southeast Asia sold for less, but operating profits were up 66 percent from the previous quarter.LG was able to beat Samsung for the first time in the premium market.
With its Chocolate phones and its new brand, Shine, LG was able to boost its phone prices by an average of $20, mainly in the European marketAlthough the number of cell phones LG sold in the first quarter was down by 12 percent, revenue was up 17.8 percent.
The firm also recovered from a 51.9-billion-won ($56 million) operating loss last year to post an operating profit for the first quarter of 110.2 billion won.“Profitability in Korea’s phone industry has dropped for two years in a row so this is definitely encouraging,” said Noh Geun-chang, an analyst at Korea Investment & Securities Inc.Overall, however, the first quarter was not a good one for the industry.
Nokia, which did well last year thanks to growth in low-end markets, saw slower growth. Its annual operating profits were down, though it did sell 21 percent more phones.
Motorola, which soared last year on popularity of its Razr phones, did not make much progress. Sony Ericsson’s revenue and operating profits were also down compared to the previous quarter.

LG Tops Air-Con
Market
KOREA TIMES: 01-16-2007
By Cho Jin-seo / Staff Reporter
LG Electronics said Tuesday that it was the largest air conditioner seller in the world last year. It sold 12.28 million units.
It was the seventh consecutive year that LG topped the market, and the third in a row in which it shipped more than 10 million units, the company said.
LG accounted for 19.5 percent of the 62.97 million air conditioning units sold worldwide in 2006, the company said, citing a report from Japanese research firm Fuji-Keizai.
To build on this momentum, LG introduced 103 new models with enhanced air cleaning features, such as automatic filter cleaning and automatic sterilization, and pledged to expand production by 10 percent.
``With innovative features such as the robot cleaning system, LG will satisfy the diverse demands of consumers,’’ Noh Hwan-yong, executive vice president and chief of the LG air conditioner division, said in a press release.
``As we have about 20-percent annual growth in sales, we will increase the annual production capacity from 14.8 million units to 16 million units and achieve sales of $4.5 billion,’’ he said.
The new products sterilize the inside of the heat exchanger and the surface of the cooling pan, which LG said kills 99.9 percent of mold and bacteria.
A built-in cleaning system automatically dusts off the filter regularly, freeing users from cleaning and service difficulties caused by clogged filters. A similar technology was adopted by Japan’s Matsushita in 2004.
LG said the auto filter cleaning reduces electricity consumption 13 percent. A clogged filter can reduce cooling and heating efficiency, increase operation costs and lead to premature component failure.
The new product will be launched immediately in South Korea and will be soon available worldwide.
To expand production capacity, LG will increase the proportion of its manufacturing that takes place overseas from the current 55 percent to 60 percent, it said.
LG is leading its domestic rival Samsung Electronics in the household appliance sector, both locally and globally.
It operates air conditioner manufacturing lines in seven countries _ South Korea, China, India, Thailand, Vietnam, Turkey and Brazil _ and plans to open more up factories in Saudi Arabia and in Iran.
It has six research and development centers for air conditioners.
iPhone Accused of
Copycatting Korean Model
KOREA TIMES:01-16-2007
By Kim Tae-gyu /Staff Reporter
The iPhone of Apple Computer is allegedly a clone of a handset made by the Seoul-based LG Electronics, the world’s fifth-largest cell phone manufacturer.
An info-tech Web site Engadget (www.engadget.com) yesterday said that the iPhone is very similar to the LG KE850, which has a moniker of the ``Prada phone.’’
While comparing looks and touch-sensitive keypads of the two models with big pictures, the site asks for responses from readers on their similarities.
``Two sparsely-buttoned large, touch screen phones: the Apple iPhone and the LG KE850. Separated at birth, or possible lawsuit No. 2 for Apple? You decide,’’ the site briefly introduces the pictures.
What Engadget means was that if LG sues Apple over patent infingement, it would be the second lawsuit against the iPhone after its long awaited release.
As soon as Apple boss Steve Jobs revealed the iPhone last week, U.S. network company Cisco Systems filed a lawsuit against Apple, claiming trademark rights on the iPhone.
Many Internet users, who uploaded postings at the Engadget site, admitted the looks and user interfaces of the two devices are strikingly similar _ they are both rounded, black rectangles with a big touch screen in the middle.
LG Electronics also thinks the two gadgets are almost identical but the company seems undecided as to whether or not to cry foul against Apple through court action.
``At first glance, we recognized the iPhone shares many form factors with the Prada phone. We are flattered that other makers follow our design policy,’’ LG spokesman Lee Hyoung-kun said.
``We can’t say at the moment whether or not we will file a lawsuit against Apple regarding this. It’s too early to make remarks on the issues,’’ Lee said.
Experts predict that if the two phones share functionalities on top of looks, LG might file a complaint.
LG has yet to reveal specifications of the Prada phone, which the firm looks to market soon. Yet, its exterior was shown to the public when it won the International Forum Design Product Design Award for 2007.
Apple plans to launch the iPhones in June in the United States and months later in Europe.
New LG CEO Takes Aim
at Global No. 3
01-09-2007: KOREA TIMES
By Cho Jin-seo / Staff Reporter
LAS VEGAS _ Nam Yong, the newly appointed LG Electronics CEO, said he will aggressively revamp the company’s human resources in order to make the company one of the global top three by 2010.
Nam, who took over the position on Jan. 1, said that he considers LG’s top managers, and about one third of its engineers and white-collar workers to be uncompetitive and urged them to change.
``I believe that about 60,000 of our employees are quite competitive by global standards. But the quality of the remaining 30,000 is a problem,’’ he said in a meeting with reporters on Monday at the Stratosphere Tower. ``How fast we can improve the quality of those 30,000, as well as that of the top 300 managers, is the most critical issue for LG.’’
Nam said he has already invited a McKinsey & Company executive as a new chief strategic officer, and will hire more talent from outside.
Nam, who was the CEO of LG Telecom for eight years until last summer, acknowledged that he is not yet fully acquainted with the electronics industry as a whole, but still hopes that the company can join the industry’s top three rankings by 2010, in terms of revenue, profit and shareholder return. The goal was previously set by Kim Ssang-su, his predecessor who now holds an honorary position in LG Corp., the holding company of the group.
For this year, Nam is aiming for 40 trillion won in sales, up from 37 trillion won last year. He also said he will increase research and development spending from 2.9 trillion won to 3.1 trillion won.
The sales target for mobile phones was set at 7.8 million, 20 percent up from last year. He also wants to sell 10.5 million flat-screen TVs this year, with the LCD (liquid crystal display) type accounting for 8 million and plasma models the rest.
When he was at LG Telecom, Nam earned much recognition for his so-called ``noise marketing’’ policies, which referred to his strategy of provoking bigger mobile carriers with offending advertisements, thus drawing the attention of the media.
When asked if he would use the same strategy, Nam said there was no reason to avoid it.
``I had tried to do it without making a noise, but my competitors reacted by making noise. I appreciate them for that,’’ he said. ``If the nature of noise marketing is about competition, I will continue to do it. We can never succeed by imitating others.’’
Nam, adding he is in only his fourth working day at LG Electronics, said LG’s role model should be Dell in terms of supply chain management, 3M for creative planning and Toyota for manufacturing.
``I have stressed the importance of `value creation.’ That is to remove unnecessary and unproductive activity at work, such as making to many reports to managers. I believe it is my job to reduce bureaucracy within the company.’’
Meanwhile, Park Jong-ho, vice president of LG’s North America subsidiary, said its sales goal for 2007 is over $10 billion, an increase of 10 percent compared to last year.
LG Electronics Picks New CEO to Boost Profits
LG.Philips LCD’s CEO Appointment Put on Hold Definitely Over Procedural Matter
12-18-2006: KOREA TIMES
By Cho Jin-seo / Staff Reporter
LG Electronics Monday dismissed CEO Kim Ssang-su and appointed Nam Yong as its new chief, hoping that the former LG Telecom leader will rescue the struggling electronics giant.
The company also reshuffled several top management positions including the heads of its mobile phone and digital devices departments and the head of its domestic sales and marketing operations. The company is expecting a 70-percent drop in its net profit this year.
``Kim has laid the foundation for LG to become a global company through a strong reform drive. Now it's others' turn to bring the company into the next stage,'' an LG spokesman said over the phone. ``The replacement should not be viewed as a punishment, as the two executives have different roles.''
Nam, 58, earned his reputation while he was the chief executive of LG Telecom from 1998 until July. He will start work at the new post in January, while Kim, the outgoing man, will be moved to the group's strategic office.
LG insiders had expected the appointment of Nam. The company's net profit was a record-high 1.5 trillion won in 2004, but nose-dived to 700 billion won last year. This year, it is again to fall to around 200 billion won, according to reports of analysts, mainly due to lagging sales of mobile phones and losses from its stock value in LG.Philips LCD.
LG also named three foreign nationals as junior executives for the first time in its history. They are John Herrington of the United States, and Eric Surdej and Dominique Oh of France.
Nam is also known to have the full support of the group's founder and Honorary Chairman Koo Ja-kyung, since he worked for him in the chairman's office from '70s.
Kim, the outgoing CEO, was the first chief executive of LG Electronics who was not a member of the founder's family. As a manufacturing expert, he pushed for reform since 2003, and has helped LG to become a leading home appliance maker in the world.
He was also famous for initiating ``Innovation School'' program, in which every employee was sent on military-style training, including a 32-kilometer road march.
Meanwhile, LG.Philips LCD, a sister firm of LG Electronics, indefinitely postponed the appointment of its new CEO yesterday.
The company was expected to replace current chief executive Koo Bon-joon with Kwon Young-soo, chief finance officer of LG Electronics, at its board meeting held Monday afternoon.
A public relations official said that there was a minor disagreement among the board members about the appointment process. But Yonhap News Agency reported the delay was on the request of its second largest shareholder Philips, citing unidentified company officials.
The company didn't say when the board meeting will resume. LG.Philips LCD is about to see as much as 800 billion won in net losses this year.

Subject: LG to Set Up White Goods Plant in Eastern Europe
Date: 11-Jul-2005
LG Electronics will begin construction of a new white goods plant in Eastern Europe in the first half of next year to make aggressive inroads into the European premium home appliance market.
An LG Electronics official said Monday that the electronics maker would begin construction of a white goods factory in Eastern Europe before July next year.
The electronics giant is studying currently examining candidate sites for the proposed plant that will churn out various white goods including refrigerators, air conditioners and electric washers.
On condition of anonymity, he said the electronics maker would soon decide where to build the new factory and construction of the new plant will break ground in the first half of 2006.
``In April, we have made public that we would build another white goods plant in Eastern Europe. But nothing has been decided officially on where we will build the new plant and when the construction will begin and how much we will invest,’’ said LG Electronics spokesman.
However, he revealed that LG Electronics is considering Poland, the Czech Republic and Hungary as possible green-field investment destination.
LG Electronics currently operates sales subsidiaries in Hungary, Czech Republic and Romania and a digital TV production affiliate in Poland.
The company’s second digital TV plant, currently being built in Poland, will be completed in 2010. LG Electronics will invest a total of $110 million into construction of the new plant.
LG Electronics expects the new digital TV plant would create 5,000 jobs in Poland, including the employment by its business partners and parts and material suppliers that will move along into Poland.
Samsung Electronics is also reportedly reviewing setting up premium home appliance factory in Poland, Slovakia or Hungary.
Both LG and Samsung are seeking to establish its European production affiliates in one of the three Eastern European countries because the three newcomers to the European Union (EU) can be used as an effective bridgehead to advancing into Western European markets.
Labor cost is much lower in Eastern Europe in comparison to the Western Europe, thus its those three countries are excellent locations for Korean electronics heavyweights to set up production affiliates to avert hefty tariffs imposed by the EU on direct imports from Korea and other Asian countries.
The European white goods market is estimated to grow to $45 billion, up from $42 billion last year, accounting for one-third of the global white goods market.

Subject: Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics Focus Energy on R&D Center
Date: 07-Jul-2005
Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics are concentrating all their efforts to develop R&D centers.
As superiority in R&D emerges as a key to enhancing a company’s global competitiveness, the two leaders of electronics in Korea continue to transform themselves by establishing comprehensive R&D centers that combine all business areas.
Samsung Electronics is currently developing its Suwon Workplace, which was the Korean Mecca of electronics since the company’s foundation, into an “R&D base.” In Suwon, 64.7% of the entire workforce is engaged in R&D activities. Among 5 business areas of Samsung Electronics, researchers for home appliances and IT businesses, and the System-On-Chip research center of the Semiconductor Business are located in Suwon. In addition to the existing facilities, Samsung is building a new laboratory, whose construction will be complete in September.
Meanwhile, LG Electronics is relocating its mobile phone and digital appliances research centers to converge in the Guro Digital Complex. To house the currently dispersed research centers in a single place, LG has built the “Integrated Terminal Lab” earlier this year. LG is currently constructing a research belt which connects the Digital Complex in Guro, Electrical-Electronics R&D center in Woomyundong and Design Center in Kangnam.

Subject: Signs of IT Recovery Detected…Samsung and LG Launch Aggressive Capital Investment
Date: 06-Jul-2005
Signs of a recovery in the IT sector are detected in many areas. Price hikes are expected in the DRAM sector, which is Korea’s flagship export item, as demands for memory chips increase in the second half of this year. The liquid crystal display (LCD) market is also improving with the prices of large-size panels rebounding. The mobile handset market, too, is expected to see considerable improvements late this year, although there is a concern that the global mobile phone growth rate for the second half of 2005 will fall to a single digit.
Accordingly, companies in related fields expand investments to prepare for an increase in demands in the near future.
Samsung has decided to invest 600 billion won to increase memory production including NAND flash chips. Hynix Semiconductor plans to commit a total of 2 trillion won to this year’s capital investments. The company has already made investments worth 1 trillion won earlier this year. LG Electronics is test-running the third plasma display panel (PDP) facilities in Gumi, Gyeongbuk Province, which will launch mass production next month.

Subject: LG to Set Up Euro Holding Firm
Date: 26-Jun-2005
LG Electronics will set up a holding company for its European operations by realigning 14 sales affiliates under a holding firm in August to expand its push into the world’s single largest economic bloc.
The establishment of a sales holding firm in Europe by LG Electronics follows the successful operation of LG Electronics China Holding Company, a holding firm supervising all sales, production and logistics operations in China set up in 1995.
LG’s board of directors has decided to transform LG Electronics Service Europe (LGESE), a logistics subsidiary positioned in the Netherlands, into a holding firm in charge of all European operations to create synergy in marketing activities.
The 14 other European sales and production subsidiaries will be rearranged under LGESE in August.
Under the plan, LG Electronics will hand over all stakes in the 14 European sales and production subsidiaries worth 8.46 million euros, or some 650 billion won, to LGESE.
``We decided to switch European sales units into a holding company structure as part of our localization efforts in overseas markets to reinforce our sales in Europe,’’ an LG Electronics spokesman said.
``We anticipate that closer and more systematic cooperation among European sales subsidiaries under a solid sales holding company system will create synergy and boost sales in the region,’’ he added.
LG Electronics said the realignment of European sales and production subsidiaries under the new holding firm system would not follow a sweeping change in functions of the 14 companies because LGESE has hitherto functioned as a de facto holding firm for its European sales operations.
``Nevertheless, there have been some glitches for it to effectively direct LG Electronics’ sales activities across Europe, thus we believe that turning LGESE into an official holding firm will remove such obstacles for smoother cooperation in marketing and sales activities,’’ the official said.
LG Electronics seeks to turn North America, China and Europe into launch pads to reach the goal of becoming one of the top three home electronics suppliers and a leading digital trendsetter by 2010.
The electronics company believes that bulking up in the European market is a must for it to join the ranks of the world’s top-tier electronic heavyweights such as General Electric of the United States.
``We’re not going to dismiss the possibility of setting up holding companies that will function as regional sales headquarters in other regions, including North America and Southeast Asia,’’ the spokesman said. ``But it is still early to discuss this possibility.’’
Thirteen subsidiaries that will come under the new overseas holding firm are LGEDG (Germany), LGEFS (France), LGEIS (Italy), LGEUK (U.K.), LGEMK (Hungary), LGEPL (Poland), LGECZ (Czech Republic), LGERO (Romania), LGESW (Sweden), LGEES (Spain), LGEPT (Portugal), LGEHS (Greece) and LGEAL (Belgium).
LG Electronics Wales (LGEWA), a production subsidiary of the Korean electronics giant, will also fall under LGESE’s command.

Subject: LG Launches Motion-Sensing Phone
Date: 26-Jun-2005
LG Electronics begins marketing new motion-sensing three-dimensional (3D) game phones on Monday.
The world’s fifth-largest mobile handset vendor said on Sunday that it will unveil the new SV360 model, a cutting-edge 1-million-polygon 3D game phone with a new motion-sensing feature.
The motion control sensor embedded in the handset translates movements of the phone through the air into actions and prompts a response on the screen.
For instance, on the SV360 handset, which unfolds to look like a handheld game device, gamers can play a skiing game in which they steer the course, go faster and go slower just by moving the handset around.
The phone boasts more vivid graphics compared to existing 200,000-polygon gaming phones. The polygon is the basic unit of the 3D images on gaming mobile phones.
SV360 is supported by a 3D graphic acceleration chip and features a 1.3 million-pixel digital camera, external memory card slot for extra memory and MP3 player and electronics dictionary functions.
Through TV-out cable, users can enjoy games and video-on-demand files downloaded via wireless Internet as well as view photos taken with the handset through giant TV screens as well, LG Electronics said.
SV360 will be available only to SK Telecom service subscribers and KV3600, the same model for KTF and LG Telecom service users, will hit the market early next month.
Video game enthusiasts appear to benefit most from the motion-sensing technology, as they will be able to have more fun by playing games with greater body movements, such as shaking, rattling and rolling, than conventional portable gaming consoles or game phones that limit the fun to the ``thumb thing’’ using just buttons and jog switches.

Subject: Samsung, LG Found to Cook Research Data
Date: 24-Jun-2005
South Korea’s top two electronics giants have deceived the news media and their customers by manipulating market research data to indicate they are No. 1 vendors in foreign markets, according to a market research firm.
Market researcher GfK Korea recently forwarded a letter asking for cooperation to double check the market rank or market share information in press releases distributed by Korean companies before publishing the news articles to business reporters at major newspapers and television stations.
The market research firm said its Korean corporate clients continue to breach the terms of agreement to not disclose the market research data without GfK’s endorsement, releasing the data to news media.
It noted that some domestic firms are intentionally omitting background information on the data provided by GfK such as the covered period, region or market and what kind of buying channels were used for collecting the data.
A GfK Korea official said the market researcher is having headaches due to Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics maneuvering its data and using it as a tool to make press releases as if they are No. 1 vendors in either sales or brand awareness in foreign markets.
Instead of delivering a hardcopy of market tally and analysis reports to their clients as do other global market research firms, GfK provides access to its computerized database that produce automated output from tables to its clients.
However, GfK claims that Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics are increasingly making ill use of the freedom to manipulate the data themselves provided GfK’s advanced data provision service in electronic format.
For instance, on May 21, LG Electronics distributed a press release that read it took up the largest share of the liquid crystal display (LCD) TV, LCD monitor, plasma display panel (PDP) TV, cathode ray tube (CRT) monitor, DVD player, home theater system and drum-type electric washer markets in Australia in 2004, citing GfK data.
In the afternoon, Samsung Electronics retorted LG Electronics’ claim, saying its cross-town rival’s press release was not true as GfK’s data showed that Samsung controlled 21 percent of the CRT monitor and 31 percent of the LCD monitor market in 2004.
Who’s telling a lie?
``They both are telling lies,’’ said the GfK Korea official on condition of anonymity.
``LG alleged that it has the largest market share for the seven items in Australia citing GfK’s data that included only retail sales of those products. Samsung on the contrary claimed that it commanded the largest share in CRT and LCD monitor markets in Australia by using a GfK’s data that counted only business-to-business (B2B) sales,’’ he added.
He said both companies are making absurd claims that they are the No. 1 vendor in specific consumer electronics market segments showing data that their market share is the biggest only in a fragment of the market.
The official said the GfK cannot tackle the problem by taking stern measures against ill-willed manipulation of its market data by Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics because they are two major clients of the market researcher.
``They are being impudent because they broke the agreement on using GfK’s data for only self-reference and manipulate and interpret the data to promote one’s own interest. What’s more funny is that Samsung and LG are blaming us for the bilateral conflict,’’ he said.
He said the two electronics giants should stop inventing new data by manipulating GfK’s data and using them under the name of GfK and avoid misleading customers by clearly stating necessary background information of the data.
GfK Korea is the Korean affiliate of the GfK Group, a Germany-headquartered leading global market research company with more than 120 subsidiaries, offices and participations in 57 countries.

Subject: LG Freed From Rigorous China's Product Quality Test
Date: 23-Jun-2005
LG Electronics will no longer have to go through rigorous product safety and quality test procedures conducted by the Chinese government for its export items.
The electronics giant said yesterday that the Chinese government has authorized its private test laboratories to self-run product quality and safety tests that conform to the China Compulsory Certification (CCC) standard.
LG Electronics vice chairman Kim Ssang-su and Sun Da Wei, deputy director general of the Certification and Accreditation Administration of China, signed the China Quality Certification Center (CQC) Testing on Manufacturer’s Premises (TMP) agreement yesterday at the LG Twin Towers in Yoido, central Seoul.
Under the agreement, LG Electronics can conduct product quality tests at eight test laboratories that received the CQC TMP certification in Seoul instead of sending the product and engineers to mainland China.
Testing at the supplier’s laboratory under the agreement can be attractive because it could be impractical or uneconomical to displace the test object from the supplier’s premises to the laboratories of the certification authority.
Moreover, the supplier’s testing facilities may be more suitable than those of the testing body, depending on the degree of specialization.
``When the agreement takes effect, we will be able to shorten the product certification period from two to three months to less than two weeks while trimming down the certification-related quality test costs by more than 50 percent,’’ LG Electronics spokesman Cho Chang-hyun said.
Therefore, the electronics heavyweight’s export profitability from shipments to China is forecast to improve in the latter half of the year and Chinese customers will be able to meet LG’s latest releases much faster.
The CQC TMP agreement took effect yesterday.
The CCC mark system is a product safety and quality certification system devised by the Chinese government to safeguard the rights and interests of Chinese consumers.
Since August 2003, all products shipped into China have to undergo a complicated and time-consuming CCC testing process, thus the system has acted as major cost burden for all foreign manufacturers and exporters seeking to sell products in mainland China.
China bans the sale and import of products that fail to obtain the CCC mark.
LG Electronics is second only to Samsung Electronics among Korean firms to acquire CQC TMP rights from the Chinese authority.

Subject: “Samsung·LG Convergence Phones Are Indeed Amazing!” Visitors Gasp at Communic Asia 2005 Exhibition
Date: 15-Jun-2005
Terrestrial and satellite digital multimedia broadcasting (DMB) phones of Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics became the most popular items at the “Communic Asia 2005 Exhibition” held in Singapore on June 14.
Samsung divided its 120-pyeong booth space into four distinct zones – Exciting Zone, Elegance Zone, Evolution Zone, and Luxury Zone. Terrestrial and satellite DMB phones as well as mega-pixel camera phones and MP3 music phones displayed at the Exciting Zone amused the eyes and ears of visitors.
LG Electronics, too, introduced various types of advanced phones including satellite DMB phones and 3G mobile handsets. LG arranged its exhibition booth into four sections – Business Manager, Holiday Partner, Style Partner, and Joy Club where the 360-degree swivel-type satellite DMB phone and ultra-slim 5 mega-pixel digital camera phone were displayed. In particular, visitors gasped at the three-dimensional game phone, which lets users play a game just by shaking the phone.
