Samsung Techwin Aspires for World’s No.1 in
Digital Camera Maker
Maeil Business Newspaper &
mk.co.kr:11/15/2007
Samsung Techwin presented an ambitious
blueprint of achieving a leading position in the global digital camera market
by year 2010.
The company is to complete its relocation to
the 7,934㎡ scaled “Digital Camera Compound” within the Suwon electronics
complex by November 16 and disclosed on Thursday that its goal will be reached
via intensified cooperation with Samsung Electronics.
Approximately 500 HR in marketing and
R&D were relocated to Suwon’s Digital Camera Compound after having been
scattered in Seongnam.
Earlier on in August, Samsung Techwin
declared partnership with Samsung Electronics to create a prestigious digital
camera business and appointed CEO Park Jong-woo of Samsung Electronics’ Digital
Media business as head of its Camera business.
In accordance to Samsung Techwin’s “No.1
Strategy,” a total of 17.5 million digital cameras worth 2.2 trillion won are
aimed to be sold next year and by 2010, the goal is to sell 28 million units
worth 3.5 trillion won.
To accomplish such plans, Samsung Techwin is
to launch the second generation premium products, NV2 series during the former
half of 2008 and introduce 14 DSLR models in the market. Moreover, as the
company strengthens its distribution channel by utilizing Samsung Electronics’
150 global sales base, aggressive sales will be made.
Meanwhile, the company is to also focus on
promoting its brand, product planning and development competence, supplementing
demand based on function forecast while expanding overseas advertising efforts.

Changes at Samsung to sell cameras
JoongangIlbo & Joins.com:08/02/2007
The Samsung Group reshuffled its electronics businesses in order to
promote cooperation between electronics units.
Samsung Techwin said yesterday it reorganized its businesses into two
divisions: cameras and fine mechanics.
For close collaboration between its camera business and Samsung
Electronics, Park Jong-woo, the president of Samsung Electronics’ digital media
division, will head the camera division.
Samsung Techwin’s marketing and development department, now located in
Seongnam, will move to Suwon, Gyeonggi, where Samsung Electronics is based.
The change seems to be in line with the Samsung Group’s plan to raise
cameras to the same sales levels as mobile phones and liquid crystal
televisions.
“Now we can develop core parts with Samsung Electronics and enhance
compatibility between Samsung Techwin’s camera and Samsung Electronics’
camcorder, MP3 player and personal computer,” said Kim Hyun-hee, a spokesperson
at Samsung Techwin.
Kim said distributing cameras through Samsung Electronics’ sales network
in countries where it does not have sales subsidiaries could help its sales.
Samsung Techwin has sales subsidiaries in five countries including the
United States, China and Britain.
It captured 8 percent of the global camera market share last year, ranking
fifth in the world.
“Samsung Group Chairman Lee Kun-hee took an interest in the camera
business a long time ago and has a strong will to grow it further,” a Samsung
Group official said.By Kim Chang-woo JoongAng Ilbo [jbiz91@joongang.co.kr]

Samsung Announces Sponsorship of the 2007 World Cyber Games
Digital daily :05/28/2007
Samsung Camera, the U.S. subsidiary of Samsung Techwin Co., Ltd.,
announced its official sponsorship of the 2007 World Cyber Games, (WCG). The
WCG is the world's biggest international video game tournament series with well
over one million participants from more than 70 countries. With its sponsorship
of this year's event, Samsung has secured its place as the official digital
camera of the 2007 WCG.
"The World Cyber Games is the most prestigious and competitive
gaming event in the world and we are proud to be named the official digital
camera for the 2007 competition," said Stewart Henderson, Vice President
of Marketing - Digital Imaging Division for Samsung Opto Electronics America,
Inc. "This is a natural association between two world-renowned brands,
both of which are representative of excellence and cutting-edge technology. We
are pleased to be associated with WCG and the athletes whose commitment to
excellence makes it the pre-eminent gaming event in the world today."
The WCG US Open, a two-day competition which kicks off the American leg

top professional video gamers will compete in 10 of the highest profile PC and
Xbox 360 games on the market.
US Open competitors will be vying for automatic berths in the WCG USA
National Championships this September and some will earn an invitation to the
exclusive invite-only WCG Pan American Championships, taking place at the end
of June in Cancun, Mexico. The fierce competition comes to a head at the WCG
2007 Grand Finals this October in Seattle, Washington.
Samsung Digital Camera Makes 11% Market Share in N. America
Maeil Newspaper:05/28/2007
Backed by its hit product "VLUU," Samsung Techwin's digital
camera is pulling up its market share in North America at a furious rate.
According to market researcher IDC on Monday, Samsung Techwin recorded
an 11 percent market share in the North American market during Q1 this year,
taking over Nikon's 4th place.
Samsung Techwin's North American market share in Q1 2006 was mere 4
percent and 5 percent for fiscal 2006, slouching at 8th place.
However, having surpassed a market share of 10 percent in just a year in
the American market, which accounts for over 30 percent of the world's camera
market, the company now has a serious shot at becoming a global Top 3.
