Profile
Herbal traditions in India have been in place since time immemorial. The
Indian Herbs Saharanpur Group of companies has added a modern dimension to
these traditions and has made herbal products available for humans and animals.
Founded in 1951, the flagship company Indian Herbs Research and Supply
Company Limited was well underway even
before the interest in herbal remedies worldwide began. This website places
before you the various facets of the Group's activities, in particular the
development and marketing of herbal products for humans and animals. Don't
leave without taking a look at the Interface section where you can check out
the Frequently Asked Questions section, or leave a query of the own. The vast
research bibliography is also available and will be frequently updated. Product
details are provided in the relevant section.
Research and
Development
Research and Development has been pivotal in the progress of Indian
Herbs. Continuous high level research helped in developing many unique products
particularly in those segments where modern system of medicine does not provide
satisfactory solutions and similarly not much has been offered, so far, by
alternative sytems of medicine. More than 100 scientists have been awarded
higher degrees (post-graduate or doctorate) for outstanding research studies on
these herbal products and more than 400 research papers have been published on
these products in the eminent national and international scientific journals.
The dynamic team of scientists includes Pharmacists, Chemists,
Botanists, Microbiologists, Pharmacologists, Medical Scientists, Veterinarians
and Clinicians etc., in different departments such as Pharmacology,
Formulation, Phytochemistry, Microbiology, Quality Control, Literature Survey,
Animal House and Experimental Farms for different research studies.
The level of sophistication and capabilities of the laboratory attained
greater heights with the installation of most modern and sophisticated
instruments such as:
High Performance Thin Layer Chromatography
(HPTLC) consisting of "Linomat IV" microprocessor-controlled TLC
sampler and computer-controlled HPTLC Scanner.
High Pressure Liquid Chromatograph with PDA (HPLC)
consisting of ultra modern Photodiode Array Detector coupled with powerful
software Millennium 2010 and sophisticated solvent delivery system.
Gas Chromatograph Mass Spectrometry
UV-VIS Scanning Spectrophotometer
These systems are the best available equipment for standardisation and
quality control of herbal products.
Recognition of R and D Laboratory
In realisation of the achievements of the R and D Laboratory, the
Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India has granted it
recognition and formal certification for modern scientific research on herbal
products - the first of its kind in India.
Standardisation and Quality Control
"Quality is never an accident. It is always the result of high
intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction and skilful execution."
John Ruskin
Relentless pursuit of this dictum has ensured the quality of the
products.
The unique blend of traditional glory with modern science forms the
basis for the success of Indian Herbs products. The quality control and
standardisation of each batch of every product is achieved by using
sophisticated modern equipments and technology.
Quality Control of
Herbal Ingredients
An essential factor in the assembly of any herbal product is the
availability of quantitatively standardised herbal ingredients. The complex
nature of the components and active ingredients mixed with helper or
synergistic compounds without an active role make actual identification of the
active ingredients difficult. This does not, however, preclude scientific
standardisation of any particular herbal preparation. An outline of quality
control techniques employed by us is given below.
Identification and Authenticity of Plant Material
All the herbal ingredients meet the Quality Control Standards, set for
each particular ingredient. The scientists select the best herbal materials
from chosen locations, harvest at the optimum time and ensure the correct
post-harvest treatment and storage. The Quality Assurance (QA) Laboratory
preserves and maintains a Specimen and Database containing full information of
all plant species used by Indian Herbs. Every herbal ingredient is
authenticated by the experts, involving both macroscopic and microscopic
examination of each plant material.
Sowing the Seeds of Quality in Nature
The R and D Division has developed cultivation packages for remunerative
farming of herbs containing optimum quantity of desired active constituents to
ensure quality through appropriate cultivation. These methods are applied at
Indian Herbs' farms and the experts also educate and train the farmers about
the cultivation of such herbs with buy-back guarantee arrangements to ensure
the regular availability of the right quality ingredients.
Chemical Tests
Besides the above, following parameters are used to standardise and
evaluate the quality of the herbal materials.
Moisture
The moisture content of herbal ingredients is important since it must be
minimal for proper storage and processing.
Total Ether Extract
This quantifies the terpenoides and other volatile and fixed oils in the
herb.
Water & Alcohol Soluble Extracts
Water and alcohol extractive values broadly represent the net
quantitative values of the active constituents e.g. alkaloids, glycosides,
amino acids etc., in the herbal raw material.
Ash Value
This evaluates the mineral content of the sample and the presence of
foreign inorganic material, if any.
Analytical Tests on HPLC and HPTLC Systems
Unlike synthetic drugs, the active principles in the plant are not
always clearly defined and often they are a complex mixture of several closely
related constituents e.g. glycosides, alkaloids, terpenoides, amino acids or
flavonoids etc. Herbal product standardisation and quality control can be
achieved by using chromatographic techniques. Computer controlled High
Performance Thin Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) and High Pressure Liquid
Chromatography (HPLC) techniques provide a complete system for qualitative and
quantitative evaluation of plant constituents.
The raw material herb or finished product is extracted with different organic
solvents which are applied to the HPTLC/HPLC plate in microgram quantities and
chromatogram is then developed using different solvent systems which separate
the components of the sample under investigation. The chromatogram thus developed
is scanned using a computer controlled viewing system that and quantitates the
individual components of any herb or herbal mixture. The report shows the TLC
picture along with the areas of each peak.
The unique spectra of any peak may be used to confirm the identity
of any particular compound. Like the thumbprint of two individuals can never be
identical, so it is for the fingerprint of any plant chromatogram. It is this
that forms the basis of standardisation of herbal raw materials and polyherbal
formulations.
Quality Control of Finished Products
Finished products are subjected to strict quality control tests which
involve:
Physico-chemical analysis.
HPTLC/HPLC fingerprinting.
Pharmacological evaluation and clinical trials.
The chromatogram developed for each manufactured batch is compared with
the standard reference chromatogram to ensure batch to batch consistency and
reproducibility for uniform results ensuring the quality of the finished
product.
Good Manufacturing Practices
Manufacturing facilities located at Saharanpur (UP), only around 100
miles from Delhi, are well equipped with the latest state-of-the-art equipments
manned by highly qualified and trained technologists and backed by a refined
manufacturing culture.
Packing of finished products takes place on modern automated systems. The
machines weigh or count, fill and seal the packs on the line.
The end product is therefore untouched by human hands. The automation of the
entire process effectively meets the requirements of "Good Manufacturing
Practices" (GMP) according to the guidelines of the World Health
Organisation(WHO).
Responding to Emerging Global Needs
To summarise, they sow the seeds of quality in nature - monitor the
progression - reap the harvest of efficiency and provide satisfaction to the
user in terms of efficacy, freedom from toxicity and cost effectiveness. The
result is that Indian Herbs sets the standards of quality, safety and efficacy
for herbal medicines, health care products, herbal dietary supplements, herbal
veterinary medicines and herbal animal feed complements (supplements) that
others only struggle to achieve. All over the world there is growing interest
in alternative (natural) health care products and food supplements. It is
increasingly felt that the future will belong to medicines and health foods
based on natural products. They are fully equipped to meet these requirements.
Drawing inspiration from the fundamentals of Ayurvedic Medicine, Indian
Herbs, Saharanpur, has developed an original range of natural products for
humans and animals. Established in 1951 by Shri Ram Lal Agrawal, and still
nurtured by Smt. Santosh Agrawal (W/o Shri Ram Lal Agrawal) the group began
with animal health care products, and has diversified over the years to
speciality human health care products and herbal bulk drugs etc.
Herbal Animal Health Care Products Division
The founder - Sri Ram Lal Agrawal's inborn love for animals initiated a
new thought in his inquisitive mind. If this natural form of treatment
(Ayurveda) is good for humans, why can not it be applied to animals ? Thus
began his dedication to research on herbal products for animals.
Unique Blend of Traditional Glory with Modern Science
At Indian Herbs, the unique blending of traditional glory of Ayurveda
with modern science has helped in development of quality products backed with
pharmacological and toxicological studies, proper clinical evaluation and right
dosage forms which can satisfy the yardsticks which the world employs to
validate claims for any medicinal product.
According to ORG - an independent market survey organization, Indian
Herbs is one of the top 5 Animal Health Product Companies in India,
successfully competing with Multinational companies due to consistent quality
and modern scientific research. Most of the Indian Herbs products are Brand
leaders in their respective therapeutic segments.
Nature's Way to Animal Health
The theme `Nature's Way to Animal Health' adopted by Indian Herbs gives
the true expression to company's philosophy and symbolises its positioning in
the market. The founder, a visionary of his time, envisaged the use of herbal
products that can be prescribed by Veterinarians and/or that can be used by the
farmers and pet owners themselves, without a veterinary prescription.
Worldwide Research
Extensive research studies have been taken up on Indian Herbs products,
in India and other countries. Many research studies including experimental and
clinical evaluations were successfully accomplished particularly in UK,
Germany, Austria, Czech, Nigeria, Malaysia, Bangladesh etc. The clinical trials
have been conducted at different farms, feed mills, breeding centres and allied
research institutions in these and other countries. The results of most of
these studies have been published in International Journals.
They are indebted to the following eminent Veterinary Scientists who
