Guidelines for processing crude drugs and controlling the quality of herbal extracts include a format for standardizing ayurvedic crude drugs on the basis of their plant origin and related characteristics. This format incorporates the following:
1. Finding the crude drug's plant origin by taxonomic name and synonyms.
2. Tracking the source of the plant, i.e., the parts or places where it is
available or grown.
3. Identifying the agronomic features of the plant such as method of
cultivation, cell culture, etc.
4. Describing the crude drug on the basis of macroscopic and microscopic
examination and powder analysis.
5. Testing the crude drug for identity, purity and strength.
6. Naming the constituents of the crude drug such as plant chemicals present in
various forms.
7. Fingerprinting the active principles of herbal constituents by using
chromatographic techniques.
8. Describing the properties and action of the crude drug.
9. Compiling a list of important ayurvedic formulations that contain the crude
drug.
10. Disclosing the sampling methods employed to determine plant or foreign matter present.
11. Locating adulterants by macroscopic or microscopic examination.
12. Cleansing the crude drug of foreign matter and monitoring storage
conditions.

QUALITY ANALYSIS SERVICES AT the concern
Subject has one of the few independent laboratories in the world to check the deterioration of quality that often follows increases in demand and prices of essential oils (used in natural fragrances, flavors and medicines). Since many adulterants cannot be seen, tasted or smelled, essential oils may be made with cheaper ingredients that mimic qualities found only in better and costlier oils. Subject is a rare pioneering entity capable of detecting such fake oils and their blends at a fraction of the time and cost spent by other firms in the herbal industry. With its trained teams, vast knowledge base and modern operational facilities, concern offers which include:
Certificate of analysis program: subject prepares certificates of analysis for clients in the aroma therapy industry and other customers after using tests such as high-resolution gas chromatography and dual channel analysis to confirm presence and identity of adulterants in essential oils. Certificates of analysis can also be customized for clients on the basis of various stringent tests to verify quality and content of botanicals and botanical products. These tests include:
a. Authentication of quality by thin layer chromatography (TLC) fingerprinting
and/or qualitative botanical microscopy (QBM),
b. Screening botanicals for chlorinated pesticides,
c. Assessing quality by screening for heavy metals such as lead, arsenic, cadmium and aluminum,
d. Detecting mercury by cold vapor test,
e. Microbiological analysis (required by FDA) for aerobic plate and yeast count,
f. Assessment of total ash content and
g. Detecting foreign debris in botanicals and botanical products with aid of microscopy
Mass spectroscopy: it is meant for evaluating unknown oils, confirming presence of unusual compounds or analyzing blends of essential oils. Mass spectroscopy is also used to detect and identify chemicals in obscure fragrances and its cost depends upon various factors.
Microbial testing: which covers aerobic plate count and yeast/mold testing to identify contaminants in essential oils. This test is especially important for identifying bacteria in floral waters that may pose severe health hazards to consumers. Additional tests are also available to detect and verify specific bacterial strains in essential oils. The test results are reported on the certificate of analysis.
Infrared spectroscopy: This involves an inexpensive and rapid test that compares essential oil samples against a known standard. It can also be utilized to control quality of rebottled oils, blends and other finished products. Since infrared spectra are unique like fingerprints, they can verify consistency of contents and label outgoing products correctly against a master sample on file.
Material safety data sheets (MSDS): These sheets contain data on chemical products such as their identification, biochemical properties, safety, toxicology, transportation, storage conditions and the like. Regulations in some countries require companies to submit MSDS sheets whenever their products are shipped. Subject can prepare and furnish MSDS sheets for essential oils and blends along with specification sheets to save cost, if required to do so by clients.
Raw material monograph testing: This comprises a globally recognized testing standard and analytical method utilized at subject.
High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC): this test is used to analyze botanicals, pharmaceuticals, vitamins and other nutritional supplements. Moreover, the identity and quantity of individual compounds in herbal products can also be ascertained with this technique. Subject price quotations for this service depend on type of sample, level of analysis and volume.
Qualitative botanical microscopy (QBM): With this technique, species of whole and cut/sifted herb samples as well as various powders can be investigated for authenticity by subject. Taxonomic information about a species and documented data on its histology features are compiled and reported by the concern. For optimum results, clients must submit whole specimens or very finely cut root, leaf or floral samples. QBM is also used for differentiating between botanical plants with like characteristics.
Spectrophotometric assay: Numerous botanical plants may be analyzed with this method by subject for determination of marker compounds present in their tissues.
The concern commitment to excellence is evident in its day-to-day operations and quality improvement procedures. The search for excellence is in-built, continuous. The concern's staff training and awareness program promotes optimal efficiency, accuracy and open communication.
