U.S. Fed News: 05 August 2011

ALEXANDRIA, Va.,
Aug. 5 -- Delsey Luggage, Hanover, Md., has been assigned a patent (7,984,797)
developed by David Bieber, East Greenwich, R.I., for a "soft sided luggage
case with independent wheel hub."
The abstract of
the patent published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office states: "A
rolling soft sided luggage case enclosing a volume and having opposing
sidewalls, the sidewalls being supported by a tubular strut frame structure
independent of the wheel housings mounted at the rear corners of the case. A
straddle bracket affixed to a middle region of a side edge of the structural
base joins the rear sidewall strut to the rigid base without engaging the wheel
housing in order to facilitate ease of construction and repair of the wheel
bracket. The levered portion of the base to which the wheel housing is affixed
serves as a dampened swing arm on which the luggage case is sprung in order to
isolate the structural frame of the case from bumps while being rolled and to
and dampen shocks to the structure."
The patent
application was filed on Oct. 8, 2010 (12/901,108). The full-text of the patent
can be found at

Rebels pair ensure
grand final game
Northern Territory News (Australia): 16 June 2011
[What follows is the full text of the news story.]
MINOR premier Uni
Rebels got their season back on track and charged into another Darwin Airport
Resort Challenge Season women's league grand final with a 72-58 win over the
Eagles on Tuesday night.
Rebels had the
services of Michelle Friel (15 points), who rushed back from Perth, and Delsey
Ah Wang (14), who was away on AFL representative duties last week, and the pair
didn't let the team down.
Barbara Teakle and
Leonie Snowdon hit 11 points each for the Eagles and Greta Hollis-Stephensen
and Katherine Hollis chipped in with 10 each, but it just wasn't enough to
counter the flying Rebels.
The win was also a
celebration of another Rebel cracking the 400 game milestone. Chantelle Lee
played her 400th league game, and the grand final will be the 14th for her only
club.
Rebels will play
TV Jets in the women's league season decider.
Uni Rebels made it
a double for the club after winning the men's league preliminary final 86-57
against Tracy Village Jets.
The Jets loss
brought to an end a modern-day record that has been the envy of all league teams
for the past 12 years. Since 1997, Jets have been in every Challenge Season
grand final and they won six of them. The end of the record run was prompted by
the dynamic scoring duo of Aaron Ritchie, who bagged a game-high 31 points, and
Andre Moss (25), who led the defending champions into a grand final match-up
with Ansett on Saturday night. The scoring standout for the Jets was Nick
Pattrick with 27 points.

Global Luggage
Market to Reach US$48.4 Billion by 2015, According to New Report by Global
Industry Analysts, Inc.
PR Web: 30 September 2010
[What follows is the full text of the news story.]
GIA announces the
release of a comprehensive global report on Luggage market. The global market
for Luggage is forecast to reach US$48.4 billion by the year 2015, spurred by
price competitiveness and higher unit sales. Business and holiday travel
constitute the other primary growth propellants for the luggage market.
San Jose, CA
(Vocus) September 30, 2010 -- Travel and tourism drive luggage sales. Travel
luggage sales peak during tourist season and are sluggish during the rest of
the year. The popularity for outdoor sports, tourism, and adventure travel,
increased the demand for specialty luggage products. Luggage is increasingly
becoming a fashion accessory with ergonomic designs, trendy color combinations,
textures and clean contoured lines becoming the norm. Luggage producers are
focusing more on research and development, to design and manufacture luggage
with high quality materials and advanced features. This linkage of luggage with
fashion mandates luggage suppliers to constantly innovate in order to meet
evolving lifestyles and trends. Lately, security conscious tourists are opting
for lightweight, avant-garde, cabin-size luggage with highly safe-lock systems
to travel overseas. When it comes to luxury luggage, consumers in the present
times are more selective when compared to their counterparts a decade ago.
Buyers in the present scenario prefer luggage, which offers both comfort and
style.
Competition in
majority luggage markets worldwide is based on the finest brand name, product
quality, product design, and price. Other important parameters include consumer
advertising, product differentiation, innovation, and customer service. Entry
barriers for competitors in the soft side luggage market are comparatively
lower than the hardside market as hard-side luggage production is more capital
intensive, while soft-sided is labor-intensive. Major players including
Samsonite, are continuously engaged in developing luggage with sophisticated
technology, focusing on lightweight and solidity, security and storage
features.
The economic
slowdown in 2008 and 2009 had an adverse affect on the overall luggage
industry, since the number of travelers considerably dwindled, leading to a
repressed demand for suitcases and other travel and luggage accessories. The luggage
industry is heavily dependent on the travel and tourism industry, which slumped
by over 3% in 2009 compared to the corresponding period in 2008. The prospects
for 2010 also do not appear bright with a minimal growth of below 1% estimated
for the year. The global market for luggage witnessed decline in growth rates
over the last 2-3 years. With both business as well as leisure travelers
cutting down on travel expenses amid the economic downturn, the luggage
industry is also expected to witness reduced demand. Luggage manufacturers as
well as retailers worldwide continue to struggle with lower margins owing to
the decline in growth of luggage sales.
The US stands tall
as the single largest global market, as stated by the new market research
report on Luggage. Europe and Japan follow as the other significant markets for
luggage, the three accounting for a consolidated lions share of the global
market. In terms of growth, the Asia-Pacific market, driven by India, China,
Taiwan, Thailand, and Hong Kong, among others, is projected to trail blaze
ahead of the other world markets by 2015.
The
Suitcases/Pullmans Casual Bags & Garment Bags is the clear winner amassing
the largest share of the overall luggage market. The segment is also forecast
to witness the fastest annual growth rate, compounded through 2015. Sports Bags
Backpacks & Daypacks is the other significant luggage segment, retaining
its popularity over the years.
The worldwide
Luggage industry is highly fragmented and competitive, with hundreds of large,
medium and small players competing for a larger slice of the market. Survival
in the dynamic environment is dependent upon innovation, expertise, pricing and
evolution. Major participants include Antler Ltd, Atlantic Luggage Co., Boyt
Harness Company, LLC, Delsey S.A., Eagle Creek, Inc., Etienne Aigner AG,
Forward Industries, Inc., Hartmann Inc., JanSport, Inc., Luggage America Inc.,
LVMH, Nike, Inc., Platt Luggage Inc., Samsonite, Targus Group International,
Inc, Tumi Inc., Valigeria Roncato and VIP Industries Ltd.
The report titled
Luggage: A Global Strategic Business Report announced by Global Industry
Analysts Inc., provides a comprehensive review of industry outlook, overview,
market trends, product overview, recent industry activity, and profiles of
market players worldwide. Analysis and overview is presented for major
geographic markets such as the US, Canada, Japan, Europe, Asia-Pacific, Middle
East and Latin America. Market analytics are provided in terms of terms of
dollar (value) for product segments including Suitcases/Pullmans Casual Bags
& Garment Bags, Business Bags, Sports Bags Backpacks & Daypacks and
Others. The study also presents historic data for an insight into market
evolution over the period 2000 through 2006.

Bag warns you on
weight TRAVEL GEAR
Star-Ledger (NJ): 29 August 2010
[What follows is the full text of the news story.]
Name: Delsey
Helium Fusion Lite 2.0 Expandable Suiter Trolley
What it is: A
lightweight rolling suitcase with a built-in overweight indicator. The 11-pound
bag measures about 29 by 19 by 12 inches, and can expand 2 inches.
How it works: To
check if you're over the 50-pound limit on checked bags, you lift a small
handle atop the case. The mechanical weight indicator displays red if the bag
is over.
The good: The
selling point is the overweight indicator. In a trip to Scandinavia, I never
was able to make the thing register overweight, because I didn't buy enough
wool sweaters, apparently. So I tossed in hand weights when I got home. That
did it. The bag is attractive (the blue is electric), sturdy and easy-rolling
with its "mag" in-line skate wheels. I easily pulled it about 3 miles
over city streets. It also has rubberized armor on all edges, a problem area
for wear on suitcases, and the handles feel firm, yet lush.
The bad: Though it
does indicate when the bag is more than 50 pounds, it doesn't tell you how much
it's over, so it could make the last-minute juggling of weight between bags a
bit tricky when trying to stay under the cash-penalty threshold. The blue bag
is attractive, but you can bet the baggage handlers will provide a grease spot.
Fortunately, the material can be cleaned.

[What follows is the full text of the article.] It seems that one of the wonders of modern
technology is to keep making a variety of items lighter but stronger. Sports
equipment immediately comes to mind, as does luggage. For instance, the
Helium Fusion Lite 2.0 collections from Delsey Luggage, Inc., Elkridge, Md.,
draws its inspiration from aeronautics where innovative design and practical
application are a must. Utilization of lightweight aerospace materials such
as fiberglass graphite for the luggage frame and EverLast Polyester with EVA
foam backing promotes durability, while the "Over-Weight"
Indicator--with just a simple pull--on the 25" and 29" Upright
Suiter Trolleys tells travelers if their case in airline compliant: red means
the suitcase and its contents weigh more than 50 pounds. Yet, no matter how
heavy it is, the luggage's inline, recessed velocity wheels offer easy
rolling and manueverability. Besides the trolleys, the line includes a tote,
personal bag, duffel, and garment bag. If you are going to travel, you really should go
to www.delsey.com, and be sure to check out the Zip Securi Tech slide
fastener that offers protection against the forced opening of bags.

Luggage maker
VIP shuns Delsey, to focus on own brands; To launch UK-based Carlton's basket

DNA (Daily News
& Analysis) |
|
|
[What follows is the full text of the article.] VIP Industries, the largest luggage manufacturer
in India, on Thursday said it has decided to terminate distribution of French
luggage brand Delsey SA in India and Southeast Asia over disagreement on
investments. VIP, which was distributing Delsey products since
2001, has now decided to focus on its own brands. The luggage maker is also
launching Carlton brand in India that it acquired from UK's Carlton
International. "We have terminated distribution of Delsey
as they were not willing to spend on the brand's advertising here. We are
communicating the launch of Carlton to our retailers," Dilip Piramal,
chairman, VIP Industries, said on an analyst concall on Thursday, adding that
the company would focus on the flagship brand VIP that contributed most to
revenues and profits. VIP expects Carlton to break even this year and
contribute 5% to revenues. To gain market share, the company is increasing
its advertising spends on brands Alfa and Skybags. It also plans to re-launch
youth brand Footloose that will compete with Titan's luggage brand Fastrack.
The company plans to increase the presence of its mass brand Alfa in the
hypermarket channel through stores like Big Bazaar. Piramal said the company is also looking to beef
up presence in 'small items'-laptop bags, hand bags, accessories-a space it
is currently weak in. The company has already spent `18 crore, 50% more than
last year, on advertising and marketing in the first half of this year and
will spend 18-19 crore in the second half now. The company this month is also taking a 3-5%
price increase on the soft luggage segment, which is growing faster than the
hard luggage category and contributing more than 50% to revenues. About 80% of VIP's sales come from direct selling
to retailers while the rest is through distributors across the country.
Currently, about 10% of company's turnover is aided by overseas business.
This year, the company will open 60 VIP stores, majority of which will be
franchisee-run. Piramal said the company was aiming to be
debt-free by end of this year. According to a recent report by Netscribes
(India) Ltd, the luggage market in India is presently valued at `3,100 crore
and is expected to attain a market size of `4,700 crore by 2012. About 60% of
the market is unorganised while VIP is the market leader in the organised
segment with 55% market share in fiscal 2010. VIP's closest competition is Samsonite
Corporation that has a market share of 25% and is dominant in the premium
segment. Copyright 2010 Diligent Media Corporation Ltd.,
