DJ US CASH GRAIN:
Corn, Soy Basis Slip; Scaled-Down Grain Buys
OsterDowJones
Select: 21 July 2011
[What follows is
the full text of the news story.]
By Andrew Johnson
Jr
Of DOW JONES
NEWSWIRES
CHICAGO, Jul 21,
2011 (Dow Jones Commodities News Select via Comtex) -- U.S. cash corn and
soybean basis levels eroded in central U.S., as grain buyers scaled back bids
for spot supplies.
The cash market
has seen corn and soybean basis levels trend lower for the past week,
particularly corn.
"The dip in
basis logically tells you end users including processors and soybean crushers
are comfortable with the amount of supplies they have bought to cover needs
before the fall harvest," said Kim Craig, a merchandiser for Bell
Enterprises, a privately owned group of grain elevators in Illinois.
Scaled-back
operations at soy processors are expected to weigh on cash soybean basis levels
for the near term. Basis is the difference between cash prices and futures
market prices.
Soybean processors
are slowing their crush pace down to minimum levels needed to keep running,
until cheaper, more available new crop supplies enter the market after the fall
harvest begins.
There are reports
of Cargill slowing the crush at its Bloomington, Ill., plant, Solae at its
Gibson City, Ill., plant, and Archer Daniels Midland at their Decatur, Ill.,
crushing facility, said Craig.
Cash soybean basis
levels are reported 11 cents over August futures at Bloomington, Ill., down
from 22 cents at the same time last week, according to data from U.S.
Department of Agriculture.
Yet, despite the dip
in basis, corn supplies remain tight in various locations, with processors and
ethanol plants still paying large premiums above futures market prices to
secure inventories. Soybean basis levels are historically firm as well, as
there is not much movement of cash soybean supplies, analysts said.
Processors and
ethanol plants remain the highest bids in Midwest markets, with spot corn basis
bids at selected ethanol plants in the eastern Midwest leading the high basis
bids. In western Indiana, the basis ranged from 60 cents to 80 cents over
September futures, while in eastern Indiana and Ohio the basis ranged from 85
cents to 95 cents over September futures, according to data from USDA.
Meanwhile, the
threat of heat damage for developing corn crops, in the face of end of
year-supply estimates that are forecast at their lowest levels in 15 years
continue to limit declines in corn prices.
Weather
Rains will favor
the upper Midwest into the weekend and expand east early next week, with a few
showers possible late on Monday from Missouri into the southern Ohio Valley,
said Joel Widenor, vice president, Commodity Weather Group, LLC in a morning
forecast.
It appears that
conditions are still not ideal for notable rain in central Illinois, while rain
chances remain better in Ohio, Indiana and Michigan. Meanwhile, heat will
linger through the weekend in the southern Midwest, and another potent surge of
heat favors the southern and eastern Midwest again next Thursday through
Saturday, Widenor added.

Heart Healthy Grilling With Plant-Based Proteins
Solae Says Adding Soy Protein to Summer Meals Can
Provide Heart Health Benefits
Market Wire: 27 June 2011
[What follows is the full text of the news story.]
ST. LOUIS, MO --
(MARKET WIRE) -- 06/27/11 -- From fine china at a five star restaurant to a
paper plate at a backyard bar-b-que, selecting a variety of healthy foods for
every meal is the foundation of a good diet. The U.S. Department of Agriculture
(USDA) recently unveiled a new icon to help people plan healthier diets --
MyPlate. The new icon focuses on filling half of your plate with fruits and
vegetables and then filling the other half with healthy grains and lean
proteins. The USDA'sChooseMyPlate.gov site encourages consumers to select a
variety of proteins including plant-based proteins such as soy.
"Soy is a
healthy choice that more people are trying out -- whether it's for a 'Meatless
Monday' tradition or as a part of a vegetarian diet," said Simon Lusky,
research chef at Solae, LLC. "It is a source of high-quality protein and
is low in saturated fat. You can find products with soy protein in any grocery
store -- and the prices are comparable to meat products."
A recent
International Food Information Council survey on Functional Foods showed that
46 percent of consumers are concerned about cardiovascular disease -- and that
65 percent of consumers are aware of soy's heart health benefits. Soy protein
has been clinically proven to lower cholesterol. The U.S. Food and Drug
Administration's authorized health claim for soy protein says: "25 grams
of soy protein a day, as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol,
may reduce the risk of heart disease." One soy burger can provide up to 10
grams of protein or more.
"Summertime
is the season for grilling and cook-outs. It's a great time to experiment with
soy protein while still serving your family their favorite meals," said
Lusky. "Many soy protein products -- such as Match meats -- cook in the
same way as ground beef and turkey. Soy protein is extremely versatile so
you're able to take your family's favorite burger recipe -- and increase the
heart health benefits of the meal with using soy -- and it will still taste
delicious."
A variety of soy
protein products for grilling are available in grocery stores. The food
ingredients label will say "textured soy protein" or "isolated
soy protein."
"A number of
products are available to choose from -- whether you're in the mood for a hot
dog or a hamburger," said Lusky. "Pre-made burgers are available for
a fast healthy dinner, but you can also buy mixtures that mimic the texture and
function of ground meats."
Lusky says you can
develop a burger that's half ground meat and half soy protein if you want to
reduce the saturated fat in your meal.
"It is
important to follow the same food safety rules when you're grilling with soy
protein," said Lusky. "You won't have the pink color of the meat to
use as a guide, so be sure to cook until the internal temperature of the burger
is at 155 F."

the addition of the "The World Pufas Market" report to their
offering.
This global study
analyzes the Pufas market through a review of scientific studies as well as
profile of using companies describing their needs, their technical issues and
expectations towards those ingredients.
Fatty acids have
several biological functions in the organism. They provide energy, they form
part of the membranes surrounding cells. Besides, they are precursors of some
specific chemical messengers known as prostaglandines, tromboxanes and
leucotrienes. These chemical messengers control an important number of
biochemical reactions, that include growth, cell division, blood pressure,
blood coagulation, immune reactions and tissue inflammation. It is also now
widely recognized that LC-PUFAs play an important role in infant development
and the maintenance of health in mature human beings.

Findings from K.A. Campbell et al in Oil and Gas
Research Reported
Oil and Gas Research
Energy Weekly News: 25 May 2011
[What follows is the full text of the news story.]
According to
recent research from Memphis, United States, "Aqueous extraction
processing technologies, having advanced in recent years, may be a viable
alternative to hexane extraction to separate oil and protein from soybeans.
Different extraction strategies incorporating various modes of comminution,
extraction buffers, and enzymes allow production of a range of oil and protein
products, but also create different processing challenges."
"Processes
capable of achieving high free oil yields often result in a soluble protein
fraction difficult to isolate and dilute oil emulsions difficult to break.
Other processes can achieve high yields and purities of native soy protein, but
with reduced free oil yield or require a high osmotic and ionic strength
extraction buffer. This review article discusses these various advanced
processes and their relative advantages and disadvantages," wrote K.A.
Campbell and colleagues.
The researchers
concluded: "In addition, the current understanding of the underlying
fundamental concepts of aqueous extraction is discussed in order to help direct
future investigations to improve these technologies."
Campbell and
colleagues published their study in the Journal of the American Oil Chemists
Society (Advances in Aqueous Extraction Processing of Soybeans. Journal of the
American Oil Chemists Society, 2011;88(4):449-465).

EquityBites: 20 May 2011
[What follows is the full text of the news story.]
DuPont (NYSE:DD),
a science-based products and services company, on Thursday announced the
formation of two new business units, Industrial Biosciences and Nutrition &
Health.
The new Industrial
Biosciences unit will integrate Danisco's Genencor enzyme division with the
DuPont Applied BioSciences business. The new Nutritional & Health business

Both the new
business units will stand alone as a financial reporting segment.
The company said
that it has appointed Craig F Binetti as the president of the new Nutrition
& Health business and James C Collins Jr as president of Industrial
Biosciences.
Binetti most
recently led DuPont's Nutrition & Health business, a position he has held
since 2007. He has led several businesses during his 34-year career with
DuPont, including chairman and CEO of Solae, DuPont's soy protein joint venture
with Bunge.
Also Collins, who
has served in a range of business and operations leadership roles at DuPont,
has most recently led DuPont's Crop Protection business from 2004 to 2011.
Since January 2011 he has led the integration team preparing for DuPont's
acquisition of Danisco.
DuPont, through
DuPont Denmark Holding ApS, has acquired over 92% ownership of Danisco. Upon
completion of an extraordinary general meeting of Danisco shareholders
scheduled to be held in June 2011, both Binetti and Collins are expected to
join the executive board of Danisco A/S.
Also, Richard C
Olson will assume responsibility for ongoing integration of Danisco across both
new businesses units.
Olson currently
leads the company's productivity improvement and business process
simplification programmes across the company. Prior to that he led the Titanium
Technologies business since 2005. Before that he has served in a range of
business and operations leadership roles, since joining the company as a
process engineer in 1978.

US: DuPont silent on rumours of Solae sale
just-food.com
26 July 2011
By Dean Best
[What follows is the full text of the article.]
US conglomerate
DuPont has refused to be drawn on reports that it and agribusiness giant Bunge
are looking to sell their soy products venture Solae.
DuPont and Bunge
formed Solae, which makes ingredients for food manufacturers in sectors from
bakery to dairy, in 2003.
Bloomberg said
yesterday (25 July) that Solae's management had met potential buyers this
month. Two anonymous sources told the news agency that the company could be
sold for US$1.4-1.75bn, based on its annual EBITDA of around $180m.
A spokesman for
DuPont, which owns a 73% stake in Solae, declined to comment on what he called
"rumours and speculation".
The spokesman also
refused to be drawn on Solae's financial performance ahead of the publication
of DuPont's second-quarter results, which are set to be announced on Thursday.
Officials at Bunge
could not be reached for immediate comment.
Earlier this year,
DuPont acquired Denmark-based food ingredients maker Danisco in a deal worth
$6.44bn.
DuPont chair and
CEO Ellen Kullman said at the time that the deal was set to create "an
industry leader in industrial biosciences and nutrition and health".

[What follows is the full text of the article.]
Recently, soy made
a triumphant debut at M&S stores in the U.K. with the debut of Super Soya
meals.
This is the
first-ever range of meat replacement products in M&S stores. Solae's soy
protein ingredients, marketing insights and formulation capabilities feature
prominently in the products.
"This project
comes after two years of hard work from a number of people at Solae, said
Arturo Ania, business development manager Solae. M&S has never sold a meat
substitute product prior to this because of concerns about quality and taste
this product line reinforces our belief that Solae soy ingredients provide for
some of the most delicious and nutritious soy protein products on the
market."
The product line
has seven meals, including Super Soya Meat Free Lasagne and Cottage Pie, with
more to come.
M&S product
developer Lesley Anderson said,"We first started working on Super Soya
products back in 2010 when the trend towards eating less meat started to gain
interest, and have worked hard with our chefs and suppliers to create products
which taste fantastic. The range is not aimed solely at vegetarians, but those
genuinely keen to eat less meat yet who aren't willing to compromise on
taste."

Solae soy protein nuggets
Food Trade Review
01 January 2011
[What follows is the full text of the article.]
Taking the soy
protein nugget to new levels, Solae is introducing two new protein nuggets in
Europe.
A new protein
multigrain nugget--SUPRO[R] Nugget 173--uses patent-pending technology to
combine soy protein and the grains of rice, oat and barley. This is the first
soy nugget on the market that combines protein and grains in a single nugget,
making it ideal for use in a variety of products including bars, snacks, baked
goods, cereal, and more.
A new high protein
soy nugget--SUPRO[R] Nugget 570--is 90 percent protein on a dry weight basis,
making it the highest currently on the market. This patent-pending technology
provides formulation flexibility when targeting higher protein levels and works
well in a variety of food and snack applications.
SUPRO[R] Nugget
173 is comprised of 60 percent soy protein and 40 percent grains (rice, oat and
barley). SUPRO[R] Nugget 173 provides ease of use and formulation flexibility
with delivery of protein and grains in a single nugget. In addition, the
natural shape of this nugget provides a unique eating experience either by
itself or in combination with other nuggets.
SUPRO[R] Nugget
570 provides formulation flexibility for food manufacturers to achieve high
levels of protein while optimizing taste, texture and nutrition. Whether the
goal is to increase the amount of protein, or reduce the package size while
maintaining protein, SUPRO[R] Nugget 570 provides the flexibility needed to
meet the needs of consumers while providing nutritional, functional and
economical benefits to the manufacturer.
