Digital Revolution
Studios Wins Prestigious 2011 Telly Award
Digital Revolution
Studios
Entertainment
Newsweekly: 13 July 2011
[What follows is
the full text of the news story.]
Stereoscopic 3D
and 2D production company Digital Revolution Studios (DRS) won its first Telly
Award for the "Use of 3D" in Bullproof. The original series,
Bullproof, which premiered May 5, 2011 on the 3D channel, 3net (a joint venture
of Sony, Discovery and IMAX), is an innovative television series, being the
first "sportumentary" series to be filmed entirely in 3D. Not only
does Bullproof incorporate the use of groundbreaking technology, but Bullproof
is an action-packed, adventure-filled series. For a sneak peek of Bullproof,
see the video below.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=efL1nwzs79A&feature=share Accepting the
Bronze 2011 Telly Award for DRS is the Director of Bullproof, Craig Tanner, and
Stereoscopic Supervisor, Wayan Palmieri. "Bullproof was a lot of fun to
work on. From needing to engineer a cost-effective, lightweight 3D rig that was
easy for one cameraman to maneuver when a 2,000 pound bull was charging at him,
this production gave DRS the ability to shine," said Tanner, President of
DRS. "It took a great team, and I wish I could name all the 50+ team
members that worked on this show."
Perhaps the
foremost reason for Bullproof winning a 2011 Telly Award is that the DRS
creative team prioritized how stereoscopic 3D, both live action and visual
effects, including 2D-3D conversion, could better tell the heroic stories
behind the bullfighters' efforts to save the bullriders. "The 'run and
gun' style of filming necessary for this action-packed show pushed the limits
of what was possible in 3D," added Palmieri, DRS Stereoscopic Supervisor.
Digital Revolution Studios and Wild Eyes Productions co-produced the series
Bullproof with 3net. "Without the unfailing dedication of Wild Eyes Producer,
Aaron Bowden and the crucially important creative input from 3net Vice
President, Production and Development, Tim Pastore, this Telly Award would have
been impossible. We are thankful for the whole team," said Gina Light
Tanner, CEO of DRS and executive producer of Bullproof. About DRS: Digital
Revolution Studios (DRS) is a leading authority and innovator in high quality
stereoscopic 3D (S3D). DRS is on the forefront of all aspects of S3D, including
low to high budget 2D-3D conversion, live action capture, sound design/mix,
visual effects, graphics and cutting-edge post-production techniques. Founded
by the Visual Effects Editor of AVATAR, Craig Tanner, DRS is a team of
award-winning industry professionals with a combined experience of over 60
years as leaders in stereoscopic 3D technology and production. DRS has a
reputation for pioneering new technology to expand the use of 3D in
productions, including TV and features.

A taste for foot traffic Bordentown merchants are
using the city's charm -- and eateries -- to bring in more visitors
Trenton Times (NJ): 03 July 2011
[What follows is the full text of the news story.]
Downtown merchants
are trying to generate more foot traffic and revenue in their one-square-mile
area by using the city's natural charm to attract visitors, though at least one
business district booster sees the location as both a blessing and a curse when
it comes to luring tourists.
"We're hemmed
in by the river and the highway," said Doug Palmieri, president of
Downtown Bordentown Associates and owner of The Old Book Shop of Bordentown.
"The highway acts as a barrier, but also keeps Bordentown quiet, walkable,
pleasant and quaint. We're the place that people like to come to on a Friday,
Saturday, or Sunday."
That view of
Bordentown was put to the test June 24, when the historic river city bustled
with residents and first-time visitors who ventured to the first "Taste of
Bordentown City." Event-goers strolled up and down Farnsworth Avenue,
where restaurants, boutiques and galleries line both sides of the street.
The event was part
of a new partnership between the Downtown Bordentown Association and AC
Marketing geared toward bringing more visitors downtown.
"The economy
has affected the small businesses of Bordentown City," said April Sette,
who was hired, along with her business partner, Cathy Campbell, by the city in
October to help promote the businesses. "Creating events and additional
marketing campaigns is an initiative to bring awareness to the small businesses
and boutiques," she said.
Touting the city's
charm, Palmieri said the businesses have largely stayed afloat despite the
economic downturn and rising gas prices. Though he counted a half-dozen
vacancies, he said Bordentown has recently had five grand openings.
Matthew McElmoyl,
owner and chef of Oliver: a Bistro, said that nearby vacancies have hurt
business for years.
"When no one
is next door to you, it just looks like a dead, broken-down town," he
said. But with the opening of new stores, "the town is coming back to
life."
AC Marketing's
efforts have helped spread the word about Bordentown's thriving main street,
Palmieri said.
"Most people,
once they come, they return," Sette said.
The event last
weekend drew hundreds of people, Palmieri said.
"We had to
cut off ticket sales after 500," he said of the unexpected crowd, adding
that visitors who couldn't buy "Taste of" tickets still wandered
through the area.
Palmieri said a
straw poll of visitors estimated that more than 60 percent were from out of
town.
"(The event)
helped to reintroduce us to the surrounding areas," he said.
Ruben Sierra,
manager of Toscano Ristorante, said that it will spur business across the town.
"It brings
new people to see the town and try different wares all across the row," he
said.
Hamilton and Trenton
have also achieved success after holding similar events.
John Strycharz,
chairman of the Hamilton Township Economic Development Commission and organizer
of the annual "Taste of Hamilton," said the distribution of coupon
books helped to stimulate business for the participating restaurants after the
event.
In Trenton last
year, many restaurants participated in New Jersey Restaurant Week for the first
time, offering patrons a percentage off the check, complimentary dessert and
coffee, or prix-fixe menu, said Candice Frederick, tourism marketing manager
for Destination Trenton.
An "Eat
Trenton!" event, held in mid-March at The College of New Jersey,
introduced students to city restaurants. Both events, Frederick said, brought
more patrons to the restaurants.
Beantown Coins offers Grand Opening promotional
deals and discounts on rare coins
PR Web: 30 June 2011
[What follows is the full text of the news story.]
Boston, MA (PRWEB)
June 30, 2011
Beantown Coins is
a newly established rare coin website. Their founder, David Leventhal (formerly
of J.J. Teaparty, Boston's oldest and largest coin dealers) has over 30 years
of numismatic experience. David has decided to reach out with a new web
presence online, and BeantownCoins.com was born. He brings an already established
reputation as a sharp grader and trustworthy wholesaler to his "newly
minted" online coin retail enterprise.
In an effort to
quickly expand their inventory and establish a web presence, they have recently
increased the levels they'll pay when buying from the public by over 25%.
According to manager Joe Palmieri, "We believe that the dependability and
integrity with which we operate, and the Beantown Community will keep new
customers coming back forever." The founder of Beantown Coins, David Leventhal,
gained his experience while employed at J.J. Teaparty. The founder of J.J.
Teaparty, when asked what he thought about Beantown's newest promotion, said,
"Their prices were low already. They must really want to get the word out
that they're here, and they're staying."
To further aid in
welcoming "coinies" to Beantown, for a limited time Beantown Coins
will consider their list prices to be negotiable. Find an item # and contact
them with your offer. Feel free to browse their inventory often, as it changes
weekly.
About Beantown Coins:
Beantown Coins was
established in 2011 as a way for their proprietor to share his unique inventory
and the skill of his staff with the general public. David Leventhal, the son of
a coin dealer, has himself been a full-time numismatist (coin dealer) since
1979. David's father, Edwin Leventhal founded, and operated for over 30 years,
J.J. Teaparty, Boston's oldest and largest rare coin dealers. Before it's sale
to new owners, David was employed at J.J. Teaparty by his father in all aspects
of numismatics, including acting as an agent for buyers at auction. He has
extensive experience in all categories of rare and collectible coins and brings
his skill in grading to verifying their entire inventory. According to manager
Joe Palmieri, "We will continue to represent the high standards of
generations of merchants of our trade, and we will soon become a major presence
in rare coins, online. Welcome to Beantown!"

Three local tales of creativity
Caulfield Glen Eira/Port Philip Leader (Australia):
13 June 2011
[What follows is the full text of the news story.]
A FUSION of
different creativity is what three local artists hope to portray in their new
exhibition.
Anna Minardo, her
son Mauro Palmieri and their friend Jurgen Loos each have unique stories to
tell.
Minardo was born
in Italy where she studied at the American Academy of Fine Arts and the Faculty
of Architecture in Rome.
She was an
interior designer in North America and is interested in art and architecture,
in particular painting, sculpture, mosaic, graphics and the design of space.
``People often ask
me `why mosaics?' . . . my aim is to get them to use their imagination,'' she
said.
Her photographer
son grew up at his mum's studio and said he had never thought of a career
outside the creative industry. His exhibits were a form of street art inspired
by posters and ``combined with the sensuality of a woman and (her) energy''.
Loos was born in
Germany where he completed a master's degree in ceramics, exhibiting his
sculptures and jewellery throughout Europe.
Fusion is at the
Obscura Gallery, 285 Carlisle St, St Kilda East, until June 20.
A higher calling
Daily News of Newburyport (MA): 11 June 2011
[What follows is the full text of the news story.]
June 11--AMESBURY
-- Michael Farrell was a college dropout who began a profitable career in
computer networking. He listens to rock and alternative music. He's a movie
buff. He likes Stephen King novels.
This might not be
the typical introduction to a priest, but it's a snippet on Farrell, 37, who
was ordained a priest last month by Cardinal Sean O'Malley.
Farrell's first
assignment as priest is to work under the Rev. Louis Palmieri of Holy Family
Parish in Amesbury and Star of the Sea Church in Salisbury.
"I don't have
a lot of experience on the North Shore," Farrell said. "I'm trying to
find my way around. It's a beautiful area."
Farrell moved into
the rectory behind Holy Family ChurchJune 1 and is getting used to doing all
the things priests do: hearing confession, working with parishioners and
celebrating Mass.
As part of each
Mass, Farrell has to write a homily that has to do with the church's selected
reading for that week.
Farrell doesn't
only have to get used to thinking about what to say and writing it down but
also speaking before an audience.
"I still get
a little nervous about that. I've been told that will fade over time,"
Farrell said. "When you get up for a homily, you're hopefully
communicating something that's not too esoteric, not too confusing, yet not
something that they've heard 50 million times."
Farrell has a lot
to work with: 2,000 years of religious history and the divine mysteries of the
church.
He tries not to
make his homilies too long and hopes they give parishioners something to think
about and pray about.
The two priests
will be alternating which church they will be saying Mass at each week. One
week, Farrell will be in Amesbury while Palmieri is in Salisbury. The following
week, they will switch.
Becoming a priest
is something Farrell has known he wanted to do since he was 25 years old.
It took him four
more years to finally decide to go to school. He was 29 when he enrolled at St.
Charles Borromeo Seminary near Philadelphia for his undergraduate studies. He
then entered St. John's Seminary in Boston.
Born and raised in
Charlestown, he lived there until he was 9 before moving to Brockton.
He graduated from
high school in 1992 and went to Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston to
become a computer engineer. He realized after one semester that wasn't what he
wanted to do.
It was also during
this time that Farrell's family fell on hard times. He dropped out of college
and began working in computer networking.
"I would say
for a lot of people to see the collar and see that I'm a priest that actually
knows a lot about computers has surprised a few people," Farrell said.

Naturally 7
returns by popular demand after its hands-down best-of-show Playboy performance
in 2010.
Barry Benson, the
former Pomona and Claremont resident who handles the a cappella group's online
and digital marketing strategies and promotions, described Naturally 7 as a
cutting-edge ensemble.
"It took a
while for one to materialize, but I think Naturally 7 is the next generation of
Take 6," Benson opined. "The aggregation founded by brothers Roger
and Warren Thomas has seven males with the magnificent pitch of Ella Fitzgerald
using their voices as different instruments. They have such great stage
presence and are so original in their approach, they get people to focus on
what an acoustic bass, a drum, a tenor saxophone, etc. really sound like.
"They do a
great job of expanding the music and pushing the boundary of creativity.
Naturally 7 lets your ears hear something new," Benson added.
The other members
of Naturally 7 are Rod Eldridge, Jamal Reed, Garfield Buckley, Dwight Stewart
and Hops Hutton. The group opened for Michael Bubl during his tour of the
United States, Europe and Australia, sang for Montreux Jazz Festival's 75th birthday
salute to Quincy Jones and performed before Prince Charles at a London
"Royal" Variety show.
Reeves, a
naturally gifted child, was born into a musical family that included cousin
George Duke, a noted jazz and world music pianist, producer and leader; mother
Vada Swanson, a trumpeter; and uncle Charles Burrell, a Denver Symphony
Orchestra bassist. Her late father was a singer.
A child prodigy on
piano and voice, Reeves' range is reminiscent of her idol Sarah Vaughan who
could sing from baritone to three-octave soprano. Although admittedly
influenced by jazz divas Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Betty Carter
and Carmen McRae, her signature sound uniquely creates something new from the
nuances of her fabulous favorites.
Bennie Williams,
her junior high school choir teacher in Denver, encouraged Reeves to develop
the full spectrum of her vocal abilities, embrace music with no boundaries and
use her singing voice as a voice for social justice whenever she could.
The young singer
took Williams' advice to heart as a pioneering participant in desegregating
Denver schools and performing Aretha Franklin's "Spirit in the Dark"
and Edwin Hawkins' gospel song "Joy" to unite racially and culturally
diverse students in a school concert.
Internationally
renowned trumpet master Clark Terry discovered Reeves when she was a
16-year-old vocalist singing at an International Association of Jazz Educators
conference. He became her musical mentor.
When she performed
at Cal Poly, she had one hit single, "My Funny Valentine," and the
Los Angeles jazz radio station repeatedly played it, pushing it up the charts
and to national attention. Collegiate fans and community jazz aficionados
packed the University Union to hear her perform.
It was a pattern
that has been repeated on world stages as she hit her stride performing and
touring with Terry, Sergio Mendes, Harry Belafonte, Billy Childs, Tito Puente
and George Duke. Yet, as evidenced whenever she encounters fans from that
pre-fame Cal Poly concert, when mentoring talented teens as Monterey Jazz
Festival's 2010 artist-in-residence, while taking repeated bows at Carnegie
Hall's 120th anniversary gala or interacting with collegians at an UC Riverside
show in late April, Reeves remains personally humble and vocally pristine.
Guy is one of the
most revered blues guitarists of the 20th and 21st centuries. His incredible
skills have been lauded by Muddy Waters, his musical mentor, as well as B.B.
King, Howlin' Wolf, Junior Wells, Led Zeppelin, Jeff Beck, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie
Ray Vaughan, Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton.
His flamboyant
style, joyous smile and stage presence have made him popular with fans, artists
and critics worldwide. Hendrix mimicked Guy when he played guitar with his
teeth and over his head. Guy has also played guitar with drum sticks and
charismatically charms audiences with his skills and entertaining antics.
Guy, a Rock and
Roll Hall of Fame honoree who's No. 30 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the
"100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time," is credited as the link
between the blues and rock-and-roll. Clapton calls him "the best guitar
player alive" and admittedly steals Guy's guitar licks.
"Without
Buddy Guy, the blues, not to mention rock as we know it, might be a heckuva lot
less interesting today," noted a feature in "Guitarist"
magazine. "Take the blues out of contemporary rock music -- or pop, jazz
and funk for that matter -- and what you have left is a wholly spineless
affair. A tasteless stew. Makes you shudder to think about it."
Born July 30, 1936
in Lettsworth, La., Guy learned guitar on a two-string diddley bow he made. His
Harmony acoustic guitar is now included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
collection. Mentored by Muddy Waters when he moved to Chicago, he continues to
be the major living embodiment of the Chicago blues style. His Legends' blues
club in Chicago still draws prominent musicians who come to jam with Guy.
