SRI RAMAKRISHNA MATH
'This Math is a place where God
lives and receives constant loving service as the most revered member of the
family.' - Swami Ramakrishnananda
Sri Ramakrishna Math is a place of
pilgrimage, situated at Mylapore in Chennai. Commissioned by Swami Vivekananda,
this Math was started by Swami Ramakrishnananda, a direct disciple of Sri
Ramakrishna. The Math campus is filled with palpable holiness. Anyone who sits
in the temple, even if it is for a few minutes, feels the supreme calmness
descend on him. With its lush green surroundings, the Math is a lovely spot for
contemplation and meditation.
The Math has a long history of 100
years. It renders service at all levels, viz. spiritual, mental and physical
through its various activities. Every activity at the Math, whether it is
sweeping the courtyard or teaching in a school or nursing a patient, is
considered a form of worship. Through this worship one can evolve spiritually,
and simultaneously also be of service to those around us. This is the principle
behind the multifarious activities of the Ramakrishna Math and the Ramakrishna
Mission, the twin worldwide organizations having their Headquarters at Belur
near

INTRODUCTION
If Indian civilization has endured
so long, it is only because of the tremendous vitality of the Hindu religion
supporting it. And the vitality of the Hindu religion has been maintained by a
continual process of self-renewal. The quickening impulse for the rejuvenation
of religion comes from a divine source. When virtue declines and evil prospers,
a special manifestation of God known as the Avatar appears and starts the rejuvenation
process. The accumulated dirt and debris of outmoded customs and ideas are
cleared, hidden sources of power are tapped and a new vitality flows into the
old religion.
As in the past, in the 19th
century there came such a renewal, and the result was 'for the first time in
the history of
ORIGIN
During the last days of Sri
Ramakrishna his disciples gathered around him. Among them were a few young men
specially trained by him to take to the life of renunciation and service, and
continue the spiritual ministry that he initiated. Among these young men the
most talented was Narendranath who came to be known as Swami Vivekananda.
After Sri Ramakrishna's passing
away the young disciples consolidated themselves into an Order under the leadership
of Narendranath. They left their hearth and home, and took to the life of
renunciation. Their whole time was devoted to the practice of austerities, and
the study of scriptures. In spite of their austerities and wanderings
throughout
The Order received its definite
shape, both in its form and function, after Narendranath emerged as a world
figure, under the name of Swami Vivekananda, from the great Parliament of
Religions held at
While Swami Vivekananda was
feeling the urge to organize his fellow-monks into an Order, an identical
resolution was being formed in the mind of Sri Sarada Devi, the consort of Sri
Ramakrishna. In a talk with a disciple, she once said that she used to pray so
that the disciples of Sri Ramakrishna may live together and people afflicted
with the sufferings of the world should come to them and get peace of mind by
hearing from them His words.
This desire of Swami Vivekananda
and Mother was fulfilled when Swami Vivekananda was able to purchase a large
piece of land on the bank of the
Now Belur Math is the Headquarters
of the world-wide Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission.
IDEOLOGY
While giving a shape and a
habitation for the Order, Swami Vivekananda gave it also a definite ideological
background. He states: 'This Organization is His (Sri Ramakrishna's) very body,
and in the Organization itself He is ever present... He who worships the
Organization worships the Lord, and he who disregards the Organization
disregards the Lord.' In the light of this conception the Ramakrishna Order
becomes the symbol of Sri Ramakrishna and the medium for the working of his
will. Its service thereby becomes the service of him. He attached great
importance to work done with this devotional spirit. The work done in the Order
is only a service of God through the living social symbol.
This devoted work has always to go
hand in hand with ardent meditation and deep self-analysis, without which work,
however vast it might be in extent and in worldly values, ceases to have any
spiritual significance.
CENTERS
The work in the Order ranges from
the running of small monastic centres to the management of big publishing
houses, of colleges and other educational institutions, of workshops and
engineering institutions, of big hospitals and invalids' homes, of huge relief
operations in famine and flood stricken areas, and so on. Side by side there is
considerable preaching work, involving the production of books and periodicals,
lecturing to audiences of learned and cultured persons as well as common
people, and organizing and leading Vedanta Centres abroad in Asia, Europe,
ACTIVITIES
1. Spiritual and Cultural
Dissemination of spiritual and
cultural ideas is part and parcel of the ideology of the Order. The centres are
real points of contact for people of different faiths through ritualistic
worship, festivals, public celebrations, meetings, classes, and personal
interviews.
2. Publication
The Order publishes spiritual,
religious and cultural literature in English, Bengali, Hindi, Marathi, Tamil,
Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Gujarati, Sanskrit, and also in some European
languages. There are also 13 magazines published regularly by the Order.
The vast body of
Ramakrishna-Vivekananda literature and scriptural translations which the Order
has produced has become an integral part of the literature of modern
renaissance in
3. Medical
Besides these, occasional camps are conducted for the treatment of eyes, dental ailments etc.
4. Educational
5. Relief and Rehabilitation Work
The Ramakrishna Order is always in
the forefront in rendering help during natural calamities like flood, cyclone,
earthquake, drought, fire etc.
6. Activities for Youngsters
Most of the centres conduct
special programmes for youth. Here the youth listen to discourses on spiritual
matters, take part in discussions on social problems, and strengthen their own
inner potential. They are helped to build their character and become
responsible citizens.
The monastic Order in the name of
Sri Ramakrishna is the great gift that Swami Vivekananda offered to the
spiritually inclined youth of the world. Such is the training imparted that
every successful member of the Order is expected to combine in himself
many-sided abilities. He must have the capacity of an efficient civil servant,
the erudition and expressiveness of a learned professor, the sociability and
attractiveness of a genuine humanitarian, and above all the spirit of
renunciation, devotion and serenity of a true lover of God.
Swami Vivekananda himself, and his
great brother disciples have by their life of austerity, service and mutual
concord generated a holy tradition and kindled the spirit of brotherhood. Those
pioneers are all now gone, leaving this great legacy to posterity through their
own disciples, and thus the Order and tradition are to be transmitted to
generations yet to come for the spiritual upliftment of the world.
Swami Vivekananda knew that an
increasing number of young men would eventually join the Order. He wanted these
young, energetic souls to have an innate urge for God-realization, combined
with intense spirit of renunciation and service. One can join in any of the
centres of Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission in
ACTIVITIES
The force which leads and sustains
the Ramakrishna Order is a new type of monasticism in which work for the good
of humanity plays an important role. This ideal of work is a unique
contribution of Swami Vivekananda and has at least four distinct aspects.
First, a new work-ethic has been
created for the first time through this ideal. Hindu spirituality had looked
down upon karma as an expendable preliminary, and traditional sannyasins
(monks) considered themselves above this need. Through this work-ethic, work is
raised to the level of worship of God in all.
Secondly, work is looked upon as a
means of manifesting the potential divinity of the worker and this means the
divinization of all secular activities.
Thirdly, it helps the Order as a
whole to maintain a good relation with society.
Fourthly, it enhances the dignity
of the monk. He is no more looked upon as a parasite on society. He earns his livelihood
through work and does not become a burden to society.
The multifarious activities of the
Math are carried out in the spirit inspired by the above ideal. The activities

ABOUT R K MATH
Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission are twin organizations which form the core of a worldwide spiritual movement (known as Ramakrishna Movement or Vedanta Movement), which aims at the harmony of religions, harmony of the East and the West, harmony of the ancient and the modern, spiritual fulfillment, all-round development of human faculties, social equality, and peace for all humanity, without any distinctions of creed, caste, race or nationality.
Ramakrishna Math is a monastic organization for men brought into existence by Sri Ramakrishna (1836-1886), the great 19th century saint of Bengal who is regarded as the Prophet of the Modern Age.
Ramakrishna Mission is a
registered society in which monks of Ramakrishna Math and lay devotees
cooperate in conducting various types of social service mainly in India. It was
founded by Sri
Ramakrishna's chief apostle, Swami Vivekananda (1863-1902), one of the
foremost thinkers and religious leaders of the present age, who is regarded as
'one of the main moulders of the modern world', in the words of an eminent
Western scholar A. L. Basham.
Although Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission are legally and financially
separate, they are closely inter-related in several other ways, and are to be
regarded as twin organizations.
The Math and the
Mission together have 173 branch centres all over India and in different parts of the
world.
The Headquarters of these centres are situated in Belur Math. All branch centres of Ramakrishna Math come under the administrative control of the Board of Trustees, whereas all branch centres of Ramakrishna Mission come under the administrative control of the Governing Body of Ramakrishna Mission.
The main goals and objectives of these twin organizations, based on the principles of Practical Vedanta, are:
To spread the idea of the potential divinity of every being and how to manifest it through every action and thought.
To spread the idea of harmony of religions based on Sri Ramakrishna's
experience that all religions lead to the realization of the same Reality known
by different names in different religions. The Mission honours and reveres the
founders of all world religions such as Buddha, Christ and Mohammed.
To treat all work as worship, and service to man as service to God.
To make all possible attempts to alleviate human suffering by spreading
education, rendering medical service, extending help to villagers through rural
development centres, etc.
To work for the all-round welfare of humanity, especially for the uplift of the
poor and the downtrodden.
To develop harmonious personalities by the combined practice of Jnana, Bhakti,
Yoga and Karma.
HEADQUARTERS – BELUR MATH
Belur Math, sprawling over forty acres of land on the western bank of the Hooghly (Ganga), in Howrah district, an hour’s drive from Kolkata, is a place of pilgrimage for people from all over the world professing different religious faiths. Even people not interested in religion come here for the peace it exudes.
It was at Belur Math that Swami Vivekananda (1863-1902), the foremost disciple of Sri Ramakrishna (1836-1886), lived the last years of his brief life. He consecrated the grounds in 1898 by worshipping the urn containing the sacred relics of Sri Ramakrishna, which he himself carried on his shoulders to the place of worship. On that occasion he uttered these prophetic words about Belur Math: “The blazing light of universal harmony that will emanate from here will flood the whole world.” On another occasion he said that “the power that will have its rise from here [Belur Math] will flood the whole world and turn the course of men's lives into different channels; from this place will spring forth ideals which will be the harmony of Knowledge, Devotion, Yoga, and Work ... all true seekers of spirituality will in course of time assemble here.” True to that prophecy, Belur Math has become the hub of a worldwide spiritual movement known as the Ramakrishna Movement.
The serene campus of Belur Math on the Ganga includes
temples dedicated to Sri Ramakrishna, Sri Sarada Devi and Swami Vivekananda, in
which their relics are enshrined, and the main monastery of the Ramakrishna
Order. The place has been sanctified by the stay of Swami Vivekananda and
most of the monastic disciples of Sri Ramakrishna who spent several years
here. Holy Mother Sri Sarada Devi also visited this place on several
occasions. The room in which Swamiji attained Mahasamadhi has been preserved here. The headquarters of
the worldwide twin organizations known as Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission are also situated
here. An added attraction is the Museum which contains articles connected
with the history of Ramakrishna Math and Mission. The green lawns and
lush growth of trees and bushes everywhere add to the serenity and beauty of
the place. All this has contributed to an elevating spiritual ambience
that has made Belur Math an important place of pilgrimage for people all over
the world. A degree college, a polytechnic, and several other
educational institutions of the Ramakrishna Mission are situated in the
vast campus adjacent to Belur Math.
The following units belong directly to the main
monastery:
1. The MONKS’ QUARTERS: Apart from the main Monks’ Quarters, there are a few other buildings in which the monks and novices stay permanently. These quarters are out of bounds for visitors and even to lay devotees.
2. MATH OFFICE: This is the main office of Belur Math. Situated behind the main temple, it is the nerve centre of all the activities concerning worship in the temples, annual celebration of Durga Puja and other festivals, maintenance of the premises, maintenance of monks, taking care of devotees, distribution of prasad, etc. Pranami (offerings) for worship and contributions for the maintenance of monks are received at the Math Office.
3. SACRED SHRINES: The imposing sandstone temple which enshrines the sacred relics and a beautiful marble statue of Sri Ramakrishna is one of the most unique temples built in modern times. It combines the architectural features of a Hindu temple, Buddhist cave, Christian church and Islamic mosque. There are also smaller temples dedicated to Holy Mother Sri Sarada Devi, Swami Vivekananda and Swami Brahmananda. A few other buildings associated with the early history of Ramakrishna Math are:
i. the Old Shrine where worship to Sri Ramakrishna was conducted for more than three decades;
ii. the room in which Swami Vivekananda spent his last years;
iii. the ‘Old Math’, earlier known as Nilambar Mukherjee’s Garden House, which was sanctified by the Holy Mother’s stay on several occasions, and which served as the monastery of Ramakrishna Order for a short period.
4. PROBATIONERS’ TRAINING CENTRE: All the Probationers of the Ramakrishna Order have to stay for two years at the Training Centre before they are given Brahmacharya Ordination. It is a three-storied building where the novices and Acharyas (teachers) stay. In this institution regular classes are conducted for the novices on basic Hindu scriptures, lives and teachings of Sri Ramakrishna, Sri Sarada Devi, Swami Vivekananda and other incarnations and prophets, Indian philosophy, Western philosophy, Comparative Religion, etc. The novices are also given training in music, Vedic chanting, performing Puja, keeping accounts, gardening, etc. During 2004-05 there were 94 Probationers and 7 resident Acharyas at the Training Centre.
5. MATH LIBRARY: The Math has a library, meant for the use of monastics and lay Mission members; it has 21,481 books and 79 periodicals, including a collection of books used by the direct disciples of Sri Ramakrishna.
6. CELEBRATIONS: Apart from the celebration of traditional Hindu festivals such as Durga Puja, Lakshmi Puja,
Kali Puja, Saraswati Puja, Shivaratri, and the birthdays of Sri Ramakrishna, Holy Mother and Swami Vivekananda, Belur Math also observes in a solemn way the birthdays of Sri Krishna, Buddha, Jesus Christ and Chaitanya. The Christmas Eve celebration with the singing of Carols and reading from the Bible is very impressive.
Apart from the institutions mentioned above, which belong to the Belur Math Monastery, the Secretarial Office of the Headquarters of the worldwide Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission is also situated on the grounds of Belur Math. The work of coordinating and supervising the innumerable activities of the 161 branch centres of the Math and Mission is carried on in this office by the General Secretary, assisted by four Assistant Secretaries. The Secretariat has various departments such as Central Office, Cash, Accounts, Investments, Audit, Law, Relief and Rehabilitation, Welfare, Construction and Maintenance, etc.
The Headquarters office also directly
conducts the following activities.
1. CHARITABLE DISPENSARY: Begun on a modest scale with free allopathic and homoeopathic sections in 1913, the dispensary started functioning in its own building in 1938. At present the allopathic section has several departments such as general, dental, ophthalmology, ENT, dermatology, gynaecology, radiology (including ultrasonography), pathology and biochemistry. During the year it treated 7,53,216 cases.
2. HELP TO THE POOR: The Headquarters did considerable work in this respect this year by giving regular monetary help to 309 families and 2340 students and one time help to 338 families and 253 patients, incurring a total expenditure of Rs. 22,72,378. Besides this monetary help, 9717 pieces of clothing, 3 tricycles and one Caliper Shoe were distributed to needy persons.
3. RELIEF AND REHABILITATION: During the period under review, the Mission and the Math undertook relief and rehabilitation works, involving an expenditure of about Rs. 13.05 crore, in response to the cry for succour from thousands of distressed people affected by Tsunami, devastating floods, cyclones and other calamities in several parts of India. These activities have been mentioned in greater detail Types of Service under the head Relief and Rehabilitation Work.
4.
PALLIMANGAL: (Integrated Rural Development): The Math and the Mission centres
continued the project, started in 1980, in and around Kamarpukur and
Jayrambati. Various programmes such as agriculture, cottage industry, mobile
medical service, and so on were implemented, the details of which have been
mentioned in Types of Service
under the head Work in Rural and
Tribal Areas.
5. VEDA VIDYALAYA: Started in August 1993 in the same campus, the Vivekananda Veda Vidyalaya imparts Vedic education to the young. The students reside and study in an atmosphere similar to the ancient gurukula system. This year there were 22 students. Its library had 3389 books and 4 periodicals. Competent teachers taught the boys Vedic chanting and the rudiments of vedangas.
6. RAMAKRISHNA MUSEUM: In this Museum articles and artifacts closely associated with Sri Ramakrishna, Holy Mother, Swami Vivekananda and other direct disciples of the Master have been exhibited.
7.
