NOD FOR VIDEOCON, LIBERTY MUTUAL GENERAL INSURANCE JOINT VENTURE

The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority has given its go ahead to the Videocon Group's general insurance joint venture with the US-based Liberty Mutual Group, said a senior IRDA official.

Videocon Industries and Liberty Mutual had announced their intention to form a general insurance joint venture in November 2010.

Liberty Mutual will hold a 26 per cent stake in the joint venture with Videocon holding the remaining stake. The foreign insurer will have the option to increase its stake in the joint venture if regulations permit.

The two companies had said earlier that they will start the insurance joint venture with an initial capital of around $67 million.

Liberty operates in 17 countries worldwide with a mix of offerings in the insurance space ranging from auto, home and life, as well as personal liability insurance.

This is Liberty's second foray into the Indian non-life segment. It had earlier tied up with FMCG major Dabur to form a general insurance venture in 2008. They parted ways later on due to the economic slowdown.

Videocon is one of the largest players in the consumer electronics and home appliance space and operates in seven key sectors such as consumer electronics, home appliances, direct-to-home TV services, mobile handsets, GSM services, oil and gas services, LCD panel manufacturing and colour picture tube glass.

When contacted, the Videocon group Chairman, Mr Venugopal Dhoot, declined to comment on the development.

VIDEOCON AND LIBERTY’S GENERAL INSURANCE JV GOT IRDA’S NOD

Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA) has given its nod to videocon group and Liberty Mutual group to form a General insurance joint venture.

In the joint venture Liberty Mutual will hold 26% stake while Videocon will hold remaining 74% stake. However, Liberty mutual will have the option to increase its stake in the venture if Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) limit in insurance sector is increased from current 26%.

Both companies will start General insurance JV with the initial capital of $ 67 million.

This is Liberty’s second venture in non-life insurance space in India; as earlier this in 2008 it had formed a general insurance joint venture with Dabur but they parted ways due to economic slow down.

Liberty is a U.S.A. based company and it operates in 17 countries with a mix of insurance offering ranging from auto, home and life as well as personal liabilities.

Whereas Videocon industries is consumer electronics and home appliance company and operating in several spaces like consumer electronics, home appliances, Direct-to-Home (DTH) TV services, mobile handsets, GSM services, oil and gas services, LCD panel manufacturing and colour picture tube glass.

Mumbai: Videocon, the flagship company of Videocon group and Liberty Mutual group, a Boston-based global property and casualty insurance major, are planning to form a joint venture to foray into non-life insurance sector.

Under the proposed agreement, Liberty Mutual Group through a subsidiary will initially pick up 26% stake in the Indian JV and may raise it to 49% when the regulations permit. Venugopal N Dhoot, CMD, Videocon Industries said, “The company has a strong presence in Indian consumer space ranging from white and brown goods to mobile telecom services covering entire geography of India. Domain expertise of Liberty Mutual Group coupled with our huge platform of brand, trade and customer relationships will provide a robust business model to our general insurance business.”

However, Venugopal said the company has no other plans to enter into no other segments of Indian financial sector.Earlier, Liberty Mutual had a tie up with Dabur group for entering into general insurance sector, but couldn’t progress due to regulatory hurdles. Making an announcement about the proposed JV in Mumbai on Wednesday, David H Long, president, Liberty Mutual group said, “We are ending our earlier JV with Dabur group. We expect our new JV to be formed in a week and start operations after a year. We are targeting a premium of $ 50 million in the the first year. We are projecting a premium of $ 300 million over a period of five years.” To begin with, the JV will have its capital base of Rs 3000 Millions which will be sufficient to take care of the financial requirements of the company for the first five years.

Long said that the JV would infuse another capital of $40 million afterwards and has a break-even target within five years.

Both the companies will sign the joint venture agreement and apply to Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA) for a license soon , said Long .

The Videocon and Liberty Mutual JV will be initially focus on motor, health insurance, home insurance and small enterprises insurance, he said.

Mumbai: Mumbai-based Videocon Industries is set to enter the financial services sector by forming a non-life insurance joint venture with Liberty Mutual Group based in Boston, Massachusetts. Videocon, the flagship of the $5-billion Videocon Group, will hold 74% stake in the venture while the rest will be held by Liberty, a global property and casualty insurer which had revenues over $31 billion in 2009. Industry sources told FE that David H Long, president, Liberty Mutual Group and Venugopal Dhoot, chairman and managing director, Videocon Industries are expected to sign a letter of intent to this effect soon.

Under the proposed agreement, Liberty Mutual, through a subsidiary, will initially hold 26% stake in the new company and Videocon will hold 74%. Liberty will also have the option to raise its stake in the JV in line with the regulatory guidelines on foreign direct investment. When contacted, Videocon’s Dhoot refused to comment on the development.

The venture will focus on insurance for households – cars, homes, health, personal accident – besides small and medium-sized commercial enterprises. The JV will offer personal and commercial insurance products through several distribution channels. Videocon and Liberty plan to initiate the licensing application process for the new company before the end of the year.

After securing regulatory approvals, the company will start providing multi-line insurance underwriting capabilities to various distribution channels, with an emphasis on personal insurance products such as motor, health, home and personal accident protection.

Videocon has interests in consumer electronics, household appliances, oil and gas, power generation, retail, DTH and telecom businesses. The company is expected to leverage on its strong presence in consumer space. Liberty Mutual Group, meanwhile, will bring in its domain expertise. The new venture will aim to tap the expanding middle class in the country's growing economy, where more Indians will buy insurance to protect possessions.

Liberty Mutual Group is a diversified global insurer and the fifth largest property and casualty insurer in the US, based on 2009 direct written premium. The company ranks 71 on the Fortune 500 list of largest corporations in the US, based on 2009 revenue. As of December 31, 2009, Liberty had $109.5 billion in consolidated assets, $95.0 billion in consolidated liabilities, and $31.1 billion in annual consolidated revenue.

Liberty offers insurance products and services, including personal automobile, homeowners, workers compensation, commercial multiple peril, commercial automobile, general liability, global specialty, group disability, assumed reinsurance, fire, and surety.
