Vacaville, CA (Vocus/PRWEB) April 05, 2011

(PRWEB) April 1, 2011 -- On Thursday, Mark Mariani, CEO of Mariani Packing Co., welcomed the newest member of the fourth generation to the business, his daughter, Natalie Mariani. We are very excited to have Natalie join us. Being a nutritionist and a mother, she brings a unique perspective to Mariani. Her own commitment to health inspired her to take on the position of Corporate Communications Manager. When this position became available, I jumped at the chance of being able to communicate directly with our consumers. Being a Mom and a nutritionist, I know how important it is to feed our families well, and find that balance of delicious and nutritious, says Natalie.

Its not often that a family business lasts past its second generation, or third, or fourth. However, Mariani Packing Co. is just such a company. Over the last century Mariani has become the largest independent Dried Fruit processor in the United States. They have been a leader in Dried Fruit Innovation by being First To Market with new products (ie: Dried Cherries, Berries, and Tropical Fruits), and Packaging (ie: Stand up Bag, Touch Lock Re-seal). Its commitment to quality and food safety has set industry standards.

But perhaps what really sets Mariani apart, is that after over 100 years in business, the family still operates the day-to-day activities of the company. Started by a Yugoslavian farmer with a vision, Paul Mariani Sr. founded the dried fruit company on a small farm in Cupertino, CA. Three generations later, his grandson, Mark Mariani is CEO and has lead the company to be a major player in the global market.

As Manager of Marianis Corporate Communications, Natalie has plans to spread the word. She wants people to know, not just about the benefits of healthy eating, but about the benefits of eating the fruits of her familys labor. We take great pride in the legacy of our family, and we know, that in todays corporate America, the ability to trust where your food is coming from has never been more important. We want our customers to know us, not just as a brand, but as a family.

Natalie is thrilled to be joining her familys team who all work intimately in the day- to- day of the business. Marks cousin George Sousa Sr. has been Vice Chairman at Mariani for over 50 years. Georges sons, George Jr, and Stephen Sousa are both President and Director of Global Commodities respectively. Mark also has 2 sons at the company. Christopher Mariani is the Director of Facilities Management and Michael Mariani is the Director of Special Market Sales.

Sacramento Bee (CA): 17 March 2011

[What follows is the full text of the news story.]

March 17--News of last week's earthquake and tsunami in Japan dropped like a bomb at ShoEi Foods USA in Olivehurst.

The U.S.-based branch of the Japanese food company exports $100 million in food products to Japan each year, and 60 large containers destined for Japan were left in limbo when the quake hit Friday.

Since then, the company has scrambled to figure out where all of its products are and how to get them to the hundreds of thousands of Japanese who for years have received food from California.

"I'm very concerned about their future," said Don Soetaert, managing director and chairman of the ShoEi Foods USA board, said of his Japanese customers. "I've been going there for 39 years, and I'll tell you this: They'll pull together. You will not see looting or any of that kind of stuff.

"They'll be helping each other, but they won't be consuming much now."

ShoEi exports include high-quality prunes and walnuts, which the company grows.

Beyond that, ShoEi purchases hundreds of products from growers primarily in California. That includes raisins, almonds, blueberries, cheeses, coconut meat and apricots, to name just a few.

The company's Olivehurst site includes a top-grade walnut-processing facility.

When the earthquake rocked Japan's northeast coastline, ShoEi had commodity-laden containers on the Port of Oakland docks, aboard ships in the Pacific Ocean and in Japanese ports.

Since Friday, Soetaert said, he has been sorting through chaos and confusion.

He's trying to pinpoint containers and at the same time is doggedly determined to get food to victims.

Containers in Oakland were put on hold when the devastated ports in Sendai, Hitachinaka and Kashima were closed.

Then, a go-ahead was given for the still-functioning ports south of the hard-hit region -- Tokyo, Kobe and Yokohama among them.

Soetaert said some ships with ShoEi products apparently were queued up off Japan's coast, waiting to drop their cargo in ports.

The company had a sales office in Sendai that was flattened, but workers there apparently got out safely.

A ShoEi container of California walnuts was swamped by the tsunami, for a bottom-line loss of $187,000.

Soetaert was just informed by Japanese conglomerate Mitsubishi that it was abandoning a warehouse north of Sendai. He said the warehouse is robot-operated and stacks products -- including ShoEi exports -- "as high as 10 stories."

Soetaert said he is also concerned about production cutbacks at Japan's massive Yamazaki Baking Co. Ltd., which distributes food internationally.

"This bakery is our largest customer in the country," he said. "If they're cutting back four or five hours every day, they're going to have to cut back on a lot of items, because they're usually going around the clock.

"We believe there's going to be a big downturn in consumption."

Soetaert also explained that food exports typically are received in Japan on a "just in time" basis, meaning products are ordered on an ongoing basis and quickly converted for consumption.

"That's a tremendous problem. You depend on your supplier, but production is being cut back," he said.

Soetaert said that even when products get off ships and onto trucks, making deliveries amid massive destruction is difficult.

"Trucks are sent in by various people, but even if they get down the road, they don't have the fuel to get back," he said. "You can't just fill up in the middle of all that damage. Sometimes, they can't get through at all. The road just ends or isn't there.

"On top of that, it's freezing at night, and now they have the nuclear problem."

ShoEi has combined its prune facility with Sunsweet Growers Inc., but the Olivehurst company's problems are shared with other California growers and commodity handlers that ship to Japan.

That includes Diamond Foods Inc. in Stockton, Crain Walnut Shelling Inc. in Los Molinos and Mariani Packing Co. in Vacaville.

Shippers of agricultural products say they are caught in limbo -- not knowing how quickly food products can get unloaded at Japanese ports.

Officials of the Sacramento-based California Rice Commission and Blue Diamond Growers said they are not experiencing demand from Japan, but that could change if food supplies in the country decline and calls for emergency relief increase in coming weeks.

PR Web: 10 February 2011

[What follows is the full text of the news story.]

Vacaville, CA (Vocus/PRWEB) February 10, 2011

Mariani Packing Company introduces TouchLock, a Velcro-like micro-hook closure system which allows consumers to simply touch to lock and close their dried fruit bag. Mariani has launched the TouchLock feature on all stand-up gusseted packaging. This is another FIRST in innovation for Mariani.

Since 1906, Mariani has been the innovators of the dried fruit industry. Keeping in step with this legacy, in 1989 they launched the first stand-up gusseted bag with re-sealable zipper which not only revolutionized the dried fruit industry, but also the packaged goods industry as a whole. With efforts towards continuous improvement, Marianis TouchLock packaging provides an easier resealing solution for consumers.

Consumers get frustrated when traditional re-sealable zippers dont close upon first try, states Joe Flannigan, VP Sales and Marketing. Alignment has to be just right to work properly. When this doesnt happen, it makes for an unhappy consumer and ultimately the brand experience with that consumer can be compromised.

Marianis TouchLock packaging does not have to be perfectly aligned to seal properly. As long as the micro-hooks on the sides touch, youll get the bond you need to reseal your bag and keep your dried fruit fresh, states Miranda Ackerman, Marketing Director.

TouchLocks micro-hook, self-gripping fastener firmly seals the package and maintains product freshness. The material is a food grade, heat-sealable polyethylene. Aplix, the manufacturer of the micro-hook closure system, has granted Mariani US exclusivity on usage for an undisclosed period of time.

About Mariani

Since 1906, the Mariani brand has been providing premium quality dried fruit to consumers and customers all over the globe. Mariani is the largest, independent producer of dried fruit in the world and produces over 125 million pounds of dried fruit each year. Products can be found in over 40,000 retail outlets in the United States and in over 52 countries around the world. For more information, visit http://www.mariani.com.
