Local
artists add distinct touches to Botanica's children's garden
Wichita Eagle (KS): 24 July 2011
[What follows is the full text of the news story.]
July 24--Botanica's newest garden in its first
expansion could have looked like other children's gardens across the country.
But having local artists contribute their
creativity has also made it into a sort of outdoor art museum unique to
Wichita.
The artists were given the conceptual plans and
then came back with ideas that blew Botanica's staff away.
"It is amazing how they came up with
exactly what you wanted, or better," Jamee Ross, development director at
Botanica, said of the artists.
Ten of them created nearly 30 functional pieces
of art that not only look beautiful or whimsical but can withstand the natural
elements -- from hail to the kids who visit.
The artists for their part are equally thrilled
that Botanica gave them the freedom to follow their muse through a site west of
Botanica that was originally a sandbar.
"It's really nice they went with local
artists, because a lot of times these kinds of projects don't," said
Connie Ernatt, one of the artists. "They let me go with my ideas, so it
was really, really nice."
So nice that now that the garden is filled with
stream and maze and monster woods and enchanted glen, Ernatt's imagination just
keeps going wild.
"I see catfish in the stream, turtle-shell
boats, archer squirrels with nuts set around as targets," she said.
Because the garden follows the natural rolling
terrain and retains many of the original mature trees, "it doesn't feel
like you're in Kansas," Ernatt said.
Botanica intends to keep adding new artwork,
Ross said. And some of Ernatt's original artwork has been delayed because it
was sitting in a foundry in Reading when a tornado hit the town in May. But she
still had the original molds, so the work is being finished at a foundry in
Oklahoma.
Almost all of the artists donated much of their
time and some of their materials to the project, Ross said.
"They care so much about it," she
said.
Here's a rundown of the artists' work:
'Mr. Biggles' Treasure'
Conrad Snider of Newton does big pots for big
places, so he was hired to do a big pot for the entrance to the garden. The
result is a squirrel whose curled-up tail allows him to slowly reveal himself
as visitors walk around him. When the art committee first saw Mr. Biggles --
named as the counterpart to Snider's pet chicken Mrs. Biggles -- Ross said,
"tears came to our eyes. This is perfect. This is exactly what we
wanted!"
Sunflower Fountain
Terry
Corbett's work is already familiar to Botanica's fans, especially in the tile
work of the Button Fountain. For the children's garden, he created a fountain
that takes the form of the middle of a sunflower (you get to it by following
the yellow stem on the sidewalk at the garden's entrance).
The tiles are smooth and colorful and, because
the piece is a fountain and the weather is hot, children are often seen draping
themselves over it or simply cooling their hands in its water.
'Mosquito Hawk'
Greg Johnson of Wichita uses car parts to make
art and has created a kinetic dragonfly perched on a very, very tall blade of
grass. The face of the dragonfly is a total charmer.
"People gravitate to it," Ross said.
Turns out Johnson was a big fan of dragonflies
as a kid. Douglas and Pat Horbelt donated it in memory of their granddaughter
Julia Rose.
'The Legend of the Laughing Child'
Ernatt has created fairy houses of bronze that
kids will get to decorate in Granny Jean's Treehouse. There are other surprises
as well -- things that a fairy might find, Ernatt said, including seed pods and
cones that she picked up in walks along the river and then cast in bronze.
Among Ernatt's other work in the garden:
humorous little salamanders in bronze having a water fight in Salamander Cove
(and "hidden stuff is coming," Ernatt said, "hidden all the way
through" the cove"), and the painting of the inside of the Party Barn
and of a chicken coop on the back of the Farmer's Market. It includes
seek-and-find items among the chickens.
Still to come from her: more salamanders, more
fairy houses, and "Meunster Mission" -- a bronze sculpture of mice
building a rocket ship of twigs to the moon, which they've heard is made of
cheese.
Alongside much of the artwork in the garden are
supplies that allow children to do their own creating. In the case of
"Meunster Mission," for example, they'll be supplied with twigs.
Enchanted Glen
The initial plans for this little landing in the
garden -- the only place where artificial turf is used -- called for a national
company to provide prefabricated mushrooms and ladybugs.
"Something was missing," Ross said.
She saw on the Internet that Andy Newbrey of
Towanda did big flowers, so thought maybe he could do big insects. And he did
-- casting the life cycle of a butterfly in colorful, powder-coated steel.
"Mr. Pillar" is a 9-foot caterpillar
with compartments in the back that hold wings, crowns, swords and puppets to
play with. A chrysalis holds waterproof books. A butterfly bench holds visitors
who are ready to sit.
"Speed Reader," a snail reading a
book, greets visitors.
Wood Spirits and Tree Creatures
In the Monster Woods, the big concrete trees
were hand-made by Dallas company Dodson Studios, but local carving legend Gino
Salerno has added characters sculpted from Osage orange tree trunks using a
chain saw.
Ant Hill
Rich Bergen of Salina made three big red ants
and giant leaves alongside a tree-stump water pump where kids can play with a
water and sand combination.
'Musical Rainbow'
Charles Baughman of the Monart School of the
Arts made the rainbow arch of powder-coated metal leading into Granddaddy's
Musical Maze. The instruments that children can play came out of a catalog, but
the French horns that have been converted into misters were recycled from
Senseney Music.
'Entwined'
Dustin Sypher of Tallgrass Forge in Coldwater
made a wrought-iron fence at the entrance to the Cargill Children's Farm by
combining old Kansas farm implements with a winding vine.
Trash cans
The
decorative bins were painted by Pam VanBebber.

Heat scorching farmers' crops, profits
St. Louis Post-Dispatch (MO): 24 July 2011
[What follows is the full text of the news story.]
July 24--Most casual gardeners can blast a hose
on their parched, sun-stricken plants, then retreat inside to an air-cooled
living room and a glass of iced tea. But farmers -- along with their crops and
livestock -- are suffering through this heat wave with little relief and
watching the possibilities of near-record yields and profit wilt away.
"It's a really serious situation. We could
have some really severe effects because of dry weather," said Bill
Wiebold, a plant science professor at the University of Missouri, referring to
row crops. "In the western part of the state, they're abandoning fields.
The rest of the state isn't so bad, but if we don't catch a shower, there's
going to be severe damage."
In the southwestern part of the state, pasture
land has gotten so scorched that grass won't grow back, forcing ranchers to
feed their cattle hay. In two poultry sheds nears Joplin, at least 200 turkeys
have died. In dairy barns, cows are so hot they're losing their appetites --
and productivity.
"The challenge is to keep the cows cool,
with misters and fans in the loafing sheds," said Kelly Smith, director of
marketing and commodities at the Missouri Farm Bureau.
The sustained heat and lack of rain come at a
particularly bad time for corn, which is in its reproductive phase during the
month of July, when it benefits from low temperature and rain. But this year,
the weather, combined with high winds, is drying out the corn before it can
pollinate and produce a kernel.
"Weather conditions in July, and earlier,
in 2011, have been far from ideal in many areas," explained Darrel Good,
of the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana. "There is some indication
that the intense heat will begin to moderate in many areas by the upcoming
weekend."
Still, average July temperatures in the Corn
Belt rank among the highest since 1960, Good said.
Overall, corn yields could take a 3 to 10
percent hit in Missouri, according to Wiebold.
"That doesn't seem like a whole lot, but
economically, for the whole state, it's pretty big," he said. "It's a
big deal, not only to farmers -- obviously they suffer -- but it ripples through
the whole rest of the economy."
With corn fetching high prices, largely because
of projected record consumption, more farmers are planting corn, even in areas
where corn is not typically grown. Glenn Cope, a cattle farmer in Aurora, Mo.,
about 250 miles southwest of St. Louis, planted corn for the first time this
year, sinking thousands of dollars into an endeavor that promised a big payoff.
"It looked like it was going to be a great
alternative source of income," Cope said. "But at this point, we may
end up chopping it for silage."
Cope and his fellow farmers in southwest
Missouri say they'll likely take a hit in their cattle business, too. Grassland
in some areas is so parched that grass won't grow back.
"We've had a number of days over three
digits, and it's really taken a toll on our grass," Cope said. "If we
don't get rain, we'll have to start using our hay."
That
means less hay for the winter -- and a dent in profits.
The livestock, though, seem to be faring okay so
far, at least in Missouri and Illinois. (About 1,500 head of cattle have died
in South Dakota because of the heat.)
"With this high humidity and high
temperature, it's hard for them to dissipate the heat," said Mark Ernst,
the Illinois state veterinarian. "But so far, so good."
Officials in Missouri say the same, though
farmers in both states are scrambling to keep their animals cool and watered.
"I don't mean to sound sarcastic, but in
the summer it gets hot," said Linda Hickam, the deputy state veterinarian
for Missouri. "The difference in this period is the prolonged nature (of
the heat). The temperatures in the evening are still in the 80s. The animals
don't get any relief."
Poultry farmers in Missouri are enduring the
heat wave with relatively few casualties. Two facilities -- one operated for
Butterball, another for Cargill Inc. -- lost hundreds of birds when the
facilities lost power, according to John Bryan, of the Missouri Poultry
Federation.
"That's not unusual for this amount of
heat," Bryan said. "We'll be OK as long as farmers are watching their
flocks."
In North Carolina, about 50,000 chickens died at
a farm that lost power for less than an hour. In Kansas, 4,300 turkeys died on
farm where inside temperatures reached 106 degrees.
High temperatures are expected to continue through
the weekend, breaking slightly by Sunday and then, possibly, rising again
toward the end of next week.
"All they can do is sit there and hope we
get some moderation," said Smith, of the Farm Bureau. "It's really
hard on people. They have a lot invested in growing these crops, and this is
the time they sit and worry."

Terry Township couple loses home in
blaze on Friday
Daily Review (Towanda, PA): 23 July 2011
[What follows is the full text of the news story.]
July
23--TERRY TOWNSHIP -- A Terry Township couple is homeless after a fire
destroyed their two-story home Friday on Race Hill Road.
No one was home at the Moon residence on Race
Hill Road when the fire broke out early Friday morning, Wyalusing fire
officials said.
A man at the fire scene, who introduced himself
as Randy Moon, said he and his wife, Holly, lived in the home and lost all
their possessions in the fire.
Randy Moon said that he and his wife left the
house at 5:10 a.m. Friday to go to work at Cargill Taylor Beef.
The fire was reported at approximately 6 a.m.,
authorities said.
Randy Moon said a friend of his, who heard about
the fire on a police scanner, called Cargill to alert him and his wife that
their house was on fire.
Randy Moon, 53, said he and his wife rushed out
of the Cargill plant, drove home, and found their house engulfed in flames.
Firefighters arrived on scene approximately 10
minutes after the fire was reported, and found the building already engulfed in
flames, Wyalusing Assistant Chief Kevin Potter said.
Randy Moon said his two dogs managed to escape
from the fire.
However, one of the dogs, an eight-month-old
puppy, was stranded on a balcony, which was the only place that was not on fire,
said Holly Moon's son, 23-year-old Chris Shaffer.
The puppy couldn't get off the balcony because
the steps leading down from the balcony to the ground were on fire, he said.
However, with some coaxing from the people on
scene, the puppy ran down the stairs, burning its whiskers on its face, he
said. Otherwise, the puppy was OK, he said.
Wyalusing Assistant Fire Chief Kevin Potter said
Friday morning that the cause of the fire, which destroyed the house, had not
been determined.
State Police Fire Marshal Tim Young was then
called in to determine the cause of the fire, but has ruled the cause to be
"undetermined," according to Wyalusing Fire Chief Adam Dietz.
Randy Moon said he has insurance on the house.
The house dates back to 1876, Holly Moon said.
Randy
and Holly Moon said they will be staying temporarily with Holly Moon's mother
in New Albany.

Agri giants poised to grab share;
Viterra, Cargill, Richardson waiting in the wings
National Post: 23 July 2011
[What follows is the full text of the news story.]
It
could be nothing short of a frenzy.
When the Canadian Wheat Board's monopoly comes
to an end next summer, a group of private-sector players from Canada and abroad
will leap into the sector and seize as much market share as they can. There
will be stiff competition as the winners and losers get sorted out, and no one
quite knows what the end result will be.
The only thing certain is that the opportunity
for the private sector is enormous.
"You're going to open up 20 to 25 million
new tonnes of marketing opportunities for companies inside and outside
Canada," says Curt Vossen, president of agribusiness company Richardson
International Ltd.
Industry experts say it is still to early to
quantify how big this opportunity is. But the raw numbers of the Wheat Board's
business are undeniable: The company had revenue of more than $5.1-billion last
year as the one-stop shop for Western Canadian wheat farmers, and that was down
34% from the year before.
As the monopoly ends, the business model of the
industry will undergo a seismic shift. Grain-processing companies will immediately
try to source the raw material to complete their value chain.
Of the companies poised to benefit from a free
market in grain, three established Canadian players stand out: Richardson,
Viterra Inc. and the Canadian arm of Cargill Inc. Those companies have the
established relationships with farmers and customers, as well as the
infrastructure in Western Canada necessary to handle the product.
They already effectively work as agents on
behalf of the Wheat Board, so they know the ins and outs of the business.
"None of it is new or unique to us. Physically we can handle the product,
because we've been doing it for years," Mr. Vossen says.
International competitors also have their eye on
the space, most notably U.S. giant Bunge Ltd. The company is in the midst of a
major expansion of its canola-processing operations in Western Canada, and that
will give it the capacity to handle grains as well.
"Our ability to connect with farmers in
canola is a very good base for us expanding into grains," says Soren Schroder,
chief executive of Bunge North America.
However, outsiders such as Bunge do not have as
much transport and logistics capability in Western Canada as the three
established players, and will likely try to form partnerships with the
incumbents to broaden their position, experts say. Bunge has already indicated
that it will do just that.
"You can have the deepest pockets in the
world, you can be the biggest players in the world, but you still have to work
with those that are well-positioned in those areas to successfully participate
in the Canadian marketplace," Mr. Vossen says.
There are still a number of unanswered questions
in trying to predict what the market will look like, especially around the
Wheat Board itself. While its monopoly power will disappear, it is still
welcome to compete in the marketplace. Federal Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz
said the theory that the board will shrink or vanish entirely is
"ridiculous," though there are many farmers in Western Canada who
disagree.
Either way, this will be a momentous event for
private sector agribusiness companies, and they are giddy about what is to
come.
"We're certainly getting ready for it. It
is going to be a major event for Western Canadian agriculture," says
Richard Wansbutter, Viterra's vicepresident of government and commercial
relations.

Local inventor takes on pool safety
Bradenton Herald (FL): 22 July 2011
[What follows is the full text of the news story.]
July 22--CORTEZ -- Steve Beckham has invented
machines to help major corporations like Frito-Lay, Anheuser-Busch and Cargill.
But his latest invention is all about families
and a recreational setting that, especially in Florida, is common: public
swimming pools, spas and whirlpools.
Beckham and his company, Play It Safe
Technologies LLC, have just released the Safe Shield APS-120. It's an automatic
pool pump shutoff system with a price tag of $750 intended to make it nearly
impossible for people to get caught in pool drain outlets.
"The last thing you think when you go into
a public swimming pool or a spa, is that there's something in there that might
kill you," Beckham said from his Cortez home.
The death of a 7-year-old girl in 2002 inspired
the U.S. government to pay special attention to the drains of pools, spas and
whirlpools. Virginia Graeme Baker, who had first learned to swim at age 3,
drowned after she became pinned to the bottom of a friend's hot tub near
Fairfax, Va., by the suction of the pool's drain.
Six years later, her death inspired the Virginia
Graeme Baker Act, which required all of the country's public swimming pools,
spas and whirlpools to have unobstructable drain covers. The law also requires
pools with only one drain cover to have at least one of several additional
devices installed that further protects against entrapment.
One of those anti-entrapment devices is an
automatic pump shut-off system, and Beckham is convinced that the one he
invented is superior to other shut-off systems already out there.
"For most of them, every time you have a
power outage or clean your pool filter, you have to recalibrate them," he
says. "But once the APS-120 is installed, there's no additional
maintenance or calibration required.
"I'm not going to belittle my competitors.
Their products work fine; they're just not user-friendly."
Back-up anti-entrapment devices like the APS-120
became even more important earlier this year, after the Consumer Products
Safety Commission recalled 1 million pool drain covers that were previously
considered unblockable.
"We found that in some cases, these things
were mismarked and had to be rechecked," says Kathleen Reilly, public
affairs specialist with the Consumer Products Safety Commission.
"Situations most at risk would be shallow pools, single main-drain pools,
kiddie pools and wading pools."
It's impossible to tell exactly how many pools
nationwide could benefit from Beckham's invention, largely because many
complied with the Virginia Graeme Baker Act by installing two drains, a move
that guards against too much suction pressure building in just one drain.
In addition, Florida updated its regulations
several years prior to passage of the federal act. But Beckham says there are
still hundreds of thousands of pools and spas that may benefit from his
invention.

ENP
Newswire - 20 July 2011
Release
date- 18072011 - WINNIPEG, Manitoba - Cargill announced today that it will be
closing its crop inputs facility in Grimshaw, Alberta, effective July 31, 2011.
'Our
facility in Grimshaw has become an aging asset and as Cargill continues to
demonstrate a commitment to maintaining safe, efficient and cost effective
networks of farm service centres across Canada, we could no longer justify
keeping this facility operational,' said Mike Witkowicz, Cargill Farm Service
Group Manager.
To
better serve customers in the Grimshaw area, Cargill recently completed
upgrades at its nearby Fairview fertilizer facility and plans to build a
state-of-the-art distribution centre in McLennan.
The
centre will include a new 28,000 metric tonne (MT) grain facility, which will
be able to load rail cars at a rate of 50,000 bushels per hour; a crop inputs
distribution centre, including a 5,000 sq foot chemical and seed shed; a 240 MT
fertilizer blending tower; a 13,000 MT fertilizer shed- making it the largest
in the Peace River area- and two 50 MT bins for straight product loading. The
fertilizer distribution and blending system will allow Cargill to load out
around 8 Super B loads per hour.
For
all chemical needs, Cargill will continue to offer their valued customers
direct-to-farm services or alternatively, pick-up services can be arranged out
of Cargill's Manning, Fairview or McLennan facilities.
