Norwegian Assaults
Asian Tribune: 25 July 2011
[What follows is the full text of the news story.]
Sweden,
July 25 -- Terrorist attacks in Norway must be an eye opener for those European
and the western countries which blame Islam for extremism. Extremism has no
religion. Extremists are enemies of the humanity.
Two
deadly attacks in Norway that killed at least 91 people is a sad knick-knack
that domestic extremism remains a serious threat across the world.
The
world must feel the critical consequences of the terrorism which has entangled
South Asia. The super powers instead playing gimmicks in the garb of war on
terrorism must join hands to help this part of the world to save them from the
terrorism menace. They must realize that if they continue using this war for
their vested interests soon they are going to become the victims of the same.
Islam,
Christianity or any other religion never teaches its followers to go for
extremism. It is the set mindset of the individuals, international conspirators
to defame and destabilize any of the nation or a state.
No one
in the world can appreciate what for the last 32 years Norwegian has done. It
is not only a criminal act but depicts an approach to impose someone's ideas.
It may have provided pleasure to mentally sick people who could be hailing from
any of the society. During the last ten years of war on terrorism European and
western leadership and its media is on the same pace to malign Islam and the
Muslims by using terms like 'Islamic extremists'.
India
also plays the 'frontline state' role to defame Pakistan and impose blame of
each and every incident of terrorism on it. Only the responsibility of recent
bomb explosions of Mumbai has not been imposed on Pakistan as Indian government
got the strong linkage of Hindu extremists in the incident.
Soon
after the news of twin terror attacks in Norway it was speculated that the
western and European lobby may try to link it with any of the extremists'
network of South Asia. But Norwegian law enforcing agencies seems so honest and
professional that they sort out the issue immediately after the attacks that
the attacker was a local citizen who doesn't have to do anything with the world
extremist networks.
The
news agencies have reported that "Preliminary investigations indicate the
suspect, a 32-year-old Norwegian man, has nothing to do with international
terrorist groups, while local media said the horrific carnage, which deprived
many families of their young children, appears to be the crazy act of a local
extremist who wanted revenge on society".
Extremists
are obviously the real enemies of the humanity which even don't spare their
country mates or the people from the same society. They are only bothered about
their own beliefs and consider others as nonbelievers.
Few
months back an American citizen and a priest Terry Jones set on fire the holy
book 'Quran' and that too in religious place like a Church. That delivered a
very wrong message. His act not only created unrest among the Muslims but also
among the sensible religious segments of different religions including
Christianity.
Radicalization
is not something pertaining to act upon beliefs and preaching of certain
religion but is a mindset and move to adopt means of insulting the faith and
emotions of same as well as of the other religions and instigate them to the
extent in a way which could be formed as 'extremism'. This is what the West is
doing with Muslims. The Muslims have never thought of burning a Bible and
Torah. For Muslims these are sacred books and must be respected in true spirit.
Religious
extremism strengthens its roots during Russian invasion in Afghanistan. America
joins hands with this part of the Muslim countries to oust Russian forces from
Afghanistan and then left these forces being trained during the course of war
in aloofness. Then it was Pakistan alone to take care of the breed being
flourished.
So the
trained lot scattered all over the country to settle themselves according to
their own choice and style. Things were not controlled and the state level as
there would have been proper employment opportunities for them to get them
acquainted with the routine life. So they joined different factions and of
course the political as well.
Extremism
is not a phenomenon which is linked to physical actions but the rays it ejects
in kind of intolerance, prejudice and ethnocentrism. People who are religious
or the political are so possessive towards their school of thoughts that they
don't let any option differing to their perception to pour into their minds.
Radicalization
is based on radical philosophy supporting certain factions to be intolerant to
any of the ideology or thought process which differs with them. A 32-year-old
Norwegian man is quite a relevant example of the mindset narrated above. He
must be of 22 years of age when American and allied forces attacked Iraq and
Afghanistan.
Western
and European media has shown 'embedded coverage' of terrorist attacks and had
tried to establish Muslims as terrorists. So their youth is permanent viewer of
the news stories, documentaries and video packages which were mainly shown to
malign Muslims and Islam. They were obviously not shown for the information
purpose. Their youth could have got influenced from the same to practice it in
their respective societies.
This
incident has exposed that there could be very deep roots of extremism in
Norwegian society. Few years back a Norwegian newspaper published blasphemous
sketches of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) which caused severe mental torture for the
Muslims world over. It seems the network (that may not be connected with the
international extremists networks) of the people having intentions to sermonize
their side of the memo.
This
is really an alarming for the societies which believe in peace, love and
harmony. They must set their houses in order and review their policies to help
the societies entangled in extremism to make the world and their own territory
worth living for the humans.

Solving
the riddle of mysterious postcard
Birmingham Mail (UK): 01 July 2011
[What follows is the full text of the news story.]
PLAYWRIGHT
Francesca Millican-Slater was set on the trail of the mystery when she bought a
postcard in a knick knack shop in Devon.
Sent
from Lincoln to London, the card was addressed to a Miss L Gibbs of 62 Douglas
Buildings, Marshalsea Road, London, and was posted on July 15 in 1910.
It
carried the message 'Be Careful Tomorrow. AC.' Intrigued, Francesca began
retracing the steps of the postcard, travelling from Lincoln to London,
searching for Douglas Buildings and attempting to find the identities of AC and
Miss Gibbs.
Her
play, Me, Myself and Miss Gibbs, aims to take the audience on that journey.
See it
at Mac, Cannon Hill Park, on July 28-29. For tickets contact www.macarts.co.uk

Azam The rabbit from the hat in Presto
Observer (UK): 26 June 2011
[What follows is the full text of the news story.]
Pixar began life making animated logos for TV companies, but
as computer costs came down it extended to beautifully crafted short movies.
These shorts have all found their way on to DVD and a new one is now expected
before every feature it releases. Knick Knack, played out over a Bobby McFerrin
vocal, is about a lovelorn snowman. Day & Night explored the boundaries of
3D. But Presto, which originally accompanied Wall-E's release, is a masterpiece
of old-fashioned techniques, featuring a rabbit outwitting a magician in order
to get a carrot. It is relentlessly inventive and very funny.
Artistic expression in Venice
New Straits Time (Malaysia): 12 June 2011
[What follows is the full text of the news story.]
VENICE
comes with a variety of associations. For some, it's about Daniel Craig doing
battle with the forces of evil. For others it's redolent of big crowds and
pigeons putting the finishing touch to an architectural marvel.
Every
two years it's about contemporary art, most of which is completely ignored by
anyone without a direct interest in promoting it.
The
Venice Biennale is more than an opportunity for artists to express their
individuality. Entire nations can also do so. The little attention that the
world media gives to the occasion is usually focused on a small and regular
number of artists and countries. These are usually the participants most likely
to have a sensational message or at least a good door gift.
No
doubt Malaysia can produce a matchless key-ring or pewter knick-knack to send
the visitors away with, but it has never been an official participant in the
biennale.
This
time around, 89 other states are. The majority will never get a mention in the
press, nor even a small queue assembling at their pavilion. Those accolades
usually go to reliable insiders from Europe, especially Scandinavia, always
guaranteed to pull off plenty of surprises and a few shocks. Yes, shock is
still possible at the Venice Biennale, despite 53 previous events which have
tried to outdo each other in this respect.
This
year, America made more of an impression than usual. Its upside-down tank, with
athletes using the caterpillar tracks as a treadmill, is innovative and
entertaining. Is it also anti-militarist?
The
countries that must feel most left out are the hopefuls that attach the most
importance to joining this very grown-up club of supposedly culture-rich
nations. They tend to enter the limelight only when something goes wrong.
Azerbaijan's proud moment of acceptance among the art world illuminati was
spoiled by the reaction of the country's president, who deemed his artists'
work to show too negative an impression of personal freedom in his country.
It's the sort of irony that Western artists would pay to have attached to their
work, but they don't have a president like Ilham Aliyev.
Two
years ago, the Venice Biennale had been looking intently towards the Middle
East, where huge sums of money were being thrown at art. Since then, Bahrain
and Lebanon had already pulled out, and it looked like Egypt would do the same.
Instead, the latter was represented by the work of an artist who had been
killed protesting in Tahrir Square.
Although
Libya's plans for a very grand Islamic-art museum, and anything else that is
non-essential to survival, are on hold, other Arab nations are still eager
participants in Venice. Signs that normality is returning to Iraq were
indicated by Iraq's return after an absence of 35 years.
The
UAE is also back, after its triumphal entry in 2009. This time is has a Turkish
curator, Vasif Kortun, who was responsible for initiating the Istanbul
Biennale. Kortun memorably said in 2007 that this was "the year the art
world commits suicide" because of the huge number of biennale's happening
then.
Matching
the Arab Spring is a Pan-Arab initiative that includes artists from most parts
of North Africa and the Middle East, excluding Libya. This collateral event,
known as The Future Of A Promise, is curated by a contemporary-art specialist
from the auction house Sotheby's who happens to be a woman. Lina Lazaar
commented: "Through the artworks selected, I wanted to investigate how
artists from this diverse, fragmented region have responded to the often
contradictory promises that have defined our history. I am incredibly proud and
honoured to be putting together this exhibition in 2011, at such critical times
for the Arab world, and I very much hope to create the rightful platform for
these voices to be heard."
Saudi
women are also prominent in the art act. The Kingdom's contribution is Black
Arch by Shadia and Raja Alem. Most remarkably these are female artists, sisters
no less, who come from Mecca. Blackness, rather than arches, seems to be the
overriding factor. The sisters were immersed in the darkness of women's robes
and the kiswa that covers the Kaaba. Their work is declared to be "...two
visions of the world, from darkness to light. The work is a stage, set to
project the artists' collective memory of Black - the monumental absence of
colour."
Another
newcomer, from a more distant corner of the Islamic world, is Bangladesh.
Unlike Saudi Arabia, this is a country with a long and vibrant art tradition.
Works by five young Bangladeshi artists will be displayed and there is clearly
a lot of national pride involved in being part of the Venice Biennale. It's
only a matter of time before the possibilities for publicising a nation's
cultural progress and progressiveness filter through to the right ministry
here.

WINE
VILLAGE
MOTOR
INN
RUTHERGLEN
RUSTIC
Rutherglen -- in all its autumnal beauty -- is a mix of mother country and
Australian bush; Murray River flats, lush fields and gentle slopes lined with
vines and river red gums.
Its
turn-of-the-last-century main street has three ornate pubs, quaint cafes, a
cooper, knick-knack shops and the mustn't-miss Parker Pies bakery.
More
than anything, Rutherglen is about fantastic wine, no secret given the huge
sign at its entrance comparing Sydney's harbour with Rutherglen's delicious
port.
Rutherglen
was once a gold rush mecca for 35,000 people and the outskirts of town reached
to the former brothel precinct of Green's Lane, far beyond its present limits.
But it
has always been highly regarded, here and overseas, for its quality vineyards
-- some 150 years old -- which specialise in deep, rich reds, tasty durifs,
sparkling darks, piquant whites and magnificent fortified wines highlighted by
topaque and muscat.
It is
also home to Victoria's longest-running wine festival, the Rutherglen Winery
Walkabout, which was first held in the 1960s and will run again on the June
11-12 Queen's Birthday long weekend.
ACCOMMODATION
Wine
Village Motor Inn is a short stroll from the centre of town and ideally placed
for visits to the huge variety of wineries (most less than 10 minutes away).
Host Jo Smith offers simple and smart accommodation that doesn't stretch the
budget, leaving more to spend on the tastes of the region.
The
suite in which we stayed had modern bathroom facilities, comfy single and double
beds, a sunny back porch, small private garden and flat-screen TV.
The
Inn also has a grassed area for the kids and a pool with a waterside lounge for
unwinding after a day among the vines.
Prices
range from $99 a night for a standard room to $157 for the spa suite.
FOOD
Fresh
regional produce, pickles and tasty platters feature among the gourmet
breakfasts, lunches and dinners. Our weekend away included: Tuileries Wine Bar,
specialising in modern tapas delicacies and offering unique, chilled Port or
Malmsey apertifs; Chambers Rosewood vineyard, with handmade sausage to match
magnificent wine (and South Melbourne market dim sims); historic All Saints
Estate with its Scottish castle splendour, restaurant and Indigo Cheese
Company; Cofield Wines vineyard's sparkling burgundy breakfasts and Pickled
Sisters Cafe, with three-course meal and matching wines at weekends; Vintara
Winery, featuring hand-crafted wines with a difference and its hearty breakfast
coupled with Sparkling Elan; Lake Moodemere Vineyard's relaxed Bonfire
Breakfast on Monday (with hole-in-one golf shots from the cliff above the
lake); and the Late Harvest Biancone.
FUN
The
Walkabout festival attracts thousands of visitors from Melbourne, Sydney and
Canberra.
For
$25 visitors to the June 11-12 festival receive a tasting glass and holder,
entry to the 20 participating wineries and tastings of the latest-release wines
from what is widely regarded as an excellent vintage with a huge variety on
offer. Entertainment includes music, barrel racing and the great grape stomp.
And if
you want to work off a bit of indulgence, the Sunday (June 12) offers a 10km
fun run through some of Rutherglen's most picturesque areas.

MPs are so keen to save taxpayers' money to prove "we are all in this

unelected fellow-citizens to share the Palace of Westminster: its restaurants,
hallowed bars and knick-knack shops. Admittedly only when they aren't there

Still,
their constituents could enjoy cream teas on the famous Thames-side Terrace or
rent ancient Westminster Hall - built by William Rufus, the Norman Conquerer's
son - for a mere pounds 25,000 to stage a draughty party (bring your own fur coat).
They could even hire intimate private dining rooms where all sorts of

Will
it be worth it? It depends. Constituents who favour cholesterol-enhanced meals
washed down with copious quantities of low-cost Federation Ale (a northern
delicacy) will find they are 20 years too late. The parliamentary soggy chip is
an endangered species, though the press gallery cafe does decent fish and chips
on Fridays. The gym is more popular than the rifle range. There is even a

Yesterday,
the Adjournment Restaurant (currently MPs-only) offered artichoke soup with
grilled scallops, dried leek tobacco, potato puree and chervil (pounds 3.85)
followed by stuffed leg of rabbit wrapped in pancetta, with portobello

risen recently (and quality slipped, say some) to help halve the palace's
annual pounds 5.7m loss. In the nearby cafe, used by MPs' staff, jerk quorn

BRIEF: Urban Outfitters coming to downtown Towson
Baltimore Sun (MD): 04 May 2011
[What follows is the full text of the news story.]
May 04--Downton
Towson has had trouble keeping retail in recent years, but a new tenant is
giving hope of a shopping resurgence.
Trendy
clothing and knick knack store Urban Outfitters is moving to York Road in the
old space once occupied by Hudson Trail Outfitters.
The
store is slated to open in time for the holiday shopping season. It will be the
second store in the area. There is also a location in Baltimore'sInner Harbor.
Headquartered
in Philadelphia, Urban Outfitters targets "urban-minded" young people
-- aged 18 to 30-years-old. The retailer is known for its "kitschy
tee-shirts and accessories."
Urban
Outfitters will spend $2 million to renovate the building in Towson.
"We
expect its arrival to this location to elicit an extremely positive and
profound effect, as complementary retail uses will want to take advantage of
its widespread popularity and destination-store appeal," said Ryan Wilner,
a principal with KLNB Retail, which brokered the deal.
Wilner
said Urban Outfitters was attracted to the location because of nearby Towson
University and Goucher College, among other factors.

THE
KNICK-KNACK EMPIRE WITH A [pounds sterling]30M PRICE TAG
The Daily Mail
(London, England)
30 May 2011
By Paul Bracchi
[What follows is the full text of the article.]
COULD there have been
a more lucrative payday for the Middletons than last month's royal wedding?
Astonishingly, it would seem so.
Anyone who clicks
on to the family's online business today will know why. At least, they will if
they have a daughter aged between eight and 13.
Justin Bieber is
the Donny Osmond of his generation. His fanatical followers, known as
Beliebers, have snapped up millions of his albums and at 17, he is already
worth an estimated [pounds sterling]100million. In other words, the world is
full of Beliebers with pocket money to spend.
Some of that
pocket money will now be heading for the (already overflowing) Middleton family
coffers.
The deal, of
course, will open the Middletons to a familiar charge: that they are benefiting
from, if not directly exploiting, their links with the Palace.
Would
Canadian-born Bieber have even heard of Party Pieces if it hadn't been for the
recent nuptials?
Analysts say the
teenager, whose film Never say Never premiered in London in February, is now
the most influential person on the internet, with more than 10million followers
on Twitter. And his commercial marriage with Prince William's in-laws could
prove lucrative indeed for them.
Michael and Carole
Middleton, who spent the first years of her life in a council flat, could already
be worth [pounds sterling]30million. That is the figure City number crunchers
put on the potential value of their Party Pieces empire because it is now
inextricably linked to the Royal Family through their daughter.
Without that
connection, and its almost endless money-spinning possibilities - especially in
the U.S. - the company would be worth nowhere near as much.
The number of
people accessing the Party Pieces website has soared stratospherically since
Kate and William announced their engagement in November last year.
In that month
alone, new visitors to the website quadrupled to nearly 300,000. There was also
a 25-fold increase in those typing the words Party Pieces into the Google
search engine. What did they find?
Well, something akin
to a tacky high street shop cashing in on the big day with a range of cheap,
imported knick-knacks: Union Jack bunting, paper plates with official-looking
coats of arms, cake and canape decorations depicting a Queen's head,
corgi-themed cake toppers, and red-and-blue bowler hats.
There was even a
pack of Britannia scratch cards on British trivia - [pounds sterling]3.99 for
ten - with a distinctly regal feel. Players who answered all questions
correctly were awarded the title 'Queen of England'. Those who didn't were
dismissed as 'The Queen's corgi'.
Party Pieces was
the brainchild of Carole Middleton. Heavily pregnant with Kate, her first
child, in the late summer of 1981, she was unable to continue working as a
British Airways stewardess. So she started making up children's party bags
which she sold to friends and neighbours for pin money. The business grew and
husband Michael eventually gave up his own administrative job with the airline
to work with his wife.
In recent months,
their workforce has grown to 30, working out of two large converted farmhouses
near the family's home in rural Berkshire.
Shortly before the
royal wedding, more than a dozen trucks and vans, as well as an articulated
lorry, were spotted being loaded with orders.
The Middletons run
their company in total privacy; its profits or losses available to no one but
themselves. This is because Party Pieces trades as a partnership rather than
being a limited company, which would entail logging accounts at Companies
House.
The downside is that,
should the partnership fail, their possessions and their homes would be at
risk. That is as unlikely as the Queen attending a Justin Bieber concert.
There is no
mortgage on the Chelsea flat that Carole and Michael Middleton own and
reportedly bought for [pounds sterling]795,000 cash. It is used mainly by their
children and is now worth [pounds sterling]1.2million.
There is only a
small mortgage on their house in the village of Bucklebury, worth around
[pounds sterling]1.5million. When they purchased several acres of land near
their home in 2005, they paid [pounds sterling]295,000 cash.
'It is not the
Middletons' fault that there has been focus on their business,' says a royal
insider.
'But Party Pieces
is now on the radar of hundreds of thousands more people than before. Their
connections inevitably mean they will attract more potential customers and
therefore an increase in sales.'
