With mushrooming international schools having modern facilities, Mithun Architects
decided to rope in Donald Carlson, FAIA, a renowned architect from Seattle
Washington to design the Ascend International School (AIS) campus in Mumbai
keeping in mind India’s construction codes and methods as opportunities for
innovation. While designing the school campus, Carlson identified aspects of
India’s culture, values and spirituality and represented them in the school
building. The campus captures distinct innovative elements that optimizes magic
and makes learning accessible to students in their school environment. The
classrooms and design studios have been designed with the inputs of teachers so
that each and every space is purposeful and children are engaged and inspired
every day of the school year. Through his works, Carlson creates innovative
design concepts and solutions that grow from the unique characteristics and
personality of each situation – be it an educational community, a company or a
place. He always considers the “larger picture” to determine how each project
will fulfill its intended purpose and how it will enhance the quality of the
learning experience and the life of its community

Innovative New School for Children
26/11/2010
SEATTLE — 04.02.2010 — Education is a growth industry in India. It is
the path that will transform India into an economic and political powerhouse,
and everybody, it seems, is buying into the dream. New schools sprout up every
day, yet many follow established curricula and methods of teaching. Ascend
International School – conceived by Mr. Bhagat Patil, chairman of the Kasegaon
Education Society, and inspired by Seattle’s University Child Development
School – introduces a decidedly innovative approach to education in India:
while the curriculum is rigorous and integrates the concepts and skills
embedded within the major disciplines, learning happens through a process of
joyful discovery, and teaching is individualized and responsive to the talents
of each student.
