CONDITION MONITORING (CM) and RESIDUAL LIFE ASSESSMENT (RLA)  OF INDUSTRIAL PLANTS

The crucial concern of power/process plant managements, the world over, is the cost of reliable operation of plants.  Setting up of new plants is prohibitively expensive due to stringent environmental and safety concerns, uncertainties of financial return and extended lead times for new plants. The factors cited above have driven the managements to undertake technical assessment of their plant and equipment to prolong their operation.  Operation of plants and equipment till the end of their useful, rather than design life, is the ‘Mantra’ being adopted. 

 

Condition Monitoring and Residual Life Assessment are the modern scientific tools which provide accurate condition of Power / Process plant equipment and components. 

 

POWER / PROCESS PLANT AND INDUSTRIAL EQUIPMENT TO BE MONITORED 

The major equipment that need to be monitored on continuous basis in a power / process plant are Generator, Turbine and its auxiliaries, Boiler and its auxiliaries, Transformers, Switchgear, Pumps, Fans, Cables, Motors, Lightning Arresters etc.

ENERGY CONSERVATION / AUDIT 

Electrical and Thermal Energy Conservation assumes great importance in the context of depleting fossil fuel energy resources, growing Industrial, Agricultural and Domestic demands, losses in Transmission and Distribution Systems and huge financial investments and time factor in building generating facilities.  It is estimated that upto 30% of Energy Consumed in productive sectors such as Industry, Agriculture, Power, Transportation etc., can be saved by adopting better equipment maintenance, operational practices and adoption of new energy efficient technologies with very little investments.

With the above background, Subject set up the Energy Management Section and started providing Energy Audit Services in the Electrical and Thermal areas.  The services have been availed by a large number of Industries in sectors such as power generation (Thermal, Hydro and Nuclear Plants), Iron and Steel, Fertilizers, Chemicals, Petrochemicals, Food Processing Industries etc. Besides these, Municipal Corporations and large Hospitals are also availing there services.  Subject has completed over two hundred thirty Energy Audit assignments to date and the savings in Energy Costs experienced by there clients are of considerable value. INFORMATION DISSEMINATION

At SUBJECT, Test facilities, research activities and services to the industry are augmented by a special service of a different nature - Information Dissemination. The Documentation and Training Centre at SUBJECT is actively involved in this through its Technical Library, Publications and Training Programmes.

The Technical Library, has a collection of more than 18000 publications. It subscribes to over 30 journals and receives other documents and publications of government and private organizations, related to its activities regularly. The library also has a large collection of monographs and treatises, conference proceedings of major professional bodies, annual reports of CSIR labs and government research institutions, products catalogues and technical and research reports of bodies like EPRI, ERA, CIGRE, CBIP and NTIS. One of the most important areas of work is the maintenance of its standards collection which consists of standards like IEEE, IEC, IS, BS, ASTM, ANSI, IEEMA, DIN, CSA, ASA, ABB, SAMA and other special standards are a part of the collection. The library tracks the latest updates, revisions and amendments, which is also required for the testing activities of SUBJECT. Library membership is offered to organizations. The library is open to other technical persons also.

 

The Documentation and Training Centre regularly publishes two periodicals - 'Abstracts of Current Technical Literature in Electrical Engineering' a bi-monthly and 'SUBJECT News' a quarterly publication. Other publications are state-of- the-art reports, literature surveys, project reports and training course materials and workshop proceedings.

 

Training courses on testing techniques of products and components, workshops - to give an all encompassing view on the subject are conducted every year. On an average, twelve training training courses are conducted in a year. 

 

The centre promotes industrial visits for students, junior engineers and technicians round the year. The "Open House" is a programme in this direction.

 

The marketing and publicity efforts aim at wider awareness of subject's activities. Technical articles are regularly contributed to magazines like IEEMA Journal and Electrical India.
