MPower discusses area
work ethic
McAlester News-Capital (OK): 29 August 2011
[What follows is the full text of the news story.]
Aug. 29--MCALESTER
-- The work ethic.
Not so long ago,
the McAlester area and Southeastern Oklahoma's sturdy work ethic had been one
of the major draws in attracting new business and industry to the area.
Now, not so much,
according to MPower Executive Director Shari Cooper and the heads of several
businesses and companies who attended MPower's special Thursday night meeting
at the Holiday Inn Express.
Cooper has stated
how the owners of some businesses and industries in McAlester have complained
about how difficult it is to find employees with a good work ethic: Work hard,
be dependable, don't constantly miss work.
For some, those
kinds of employees are getting harder and harder to find, according to several
of those who attended the meeting.
Tony Korp,
industrial coordinator at the Kiamichi Technology Center, indicated there could
be several reasons for the situation at some locations.
"One thing I
always look at is turnover," he said. If there is a high turnover among
employees at a business or industry, it could be an indication something's
wrong, he said.
"I try to
find out why people are leaving," said Korp.
Korp said he and
Kent Towne, also of KTC, recently visited another educational facility, which
makes the work ethic part of a student's grade.
"When they
get a grade, it's a separate line item," said Korp. Students can see if
they scored "a 75 or a 100" on their work ethic, he said.
KTC is considering
such a system, according to Korp.
Korp's job at KTC
includes working with businesses and industries in the area to help train the
work force they need.
"Our students
are our product and industry is our customer," Korp said.
KTC can help teach
students how a positive work ethic should be a high priority for them, he said.
Korp also said
"School can be an area where students can show "Are you serious about
showing up for work every day?"
As Korp concluded what
he had to say, MPower Board member Tom Bledsoe of Charles Komar & Sons had
a comment about the points Korp had made.
"He's
serious," said Bledsoe.
"I don't know
if they don't know or they don't care," said Korp.
Jeff Soviar,
general manager of the Holiday Inn Express, attended the meeting and offered
some input.
"I've been
here three months from Oklahoma City," he said. "The big thing I've
noticed is the work force."
Holiday Inn
Express Director of Sales Ben Capers also offered some comments.
"We're in the
hospitality business," he noted. "Customer service is a skill that
can be taught."
Referring to
teaching a work ethic, Cooper suggested starting before students are preparing
to enter the work force.
While not
specifically about the work ethic at this point, there was a suggestion that it
might be worked into the program.
Although no
specific plans were finalized for a career day or classroom activities
regarding a work ethic, the discussion ended on an open note.
MPower Executive
Director Cooper said it will take a lot of cooperation and a lot of people to
push such projects forward.
"It takes a
village, as you've heard," she said, referring to the African proverb
about raising a child.
