Super-quick
Bentley
South Wales Evening Post (Wales): 25 November 2011
[What follows is the full text of the news story.]
BENTLEY Motors will
unfold its new Continental GTC at the Los Angeles Convention Centre in its
first public unveiling to the North American market. Below the surface, the GTC
rockets from 0-60 in 4.5 seconds thanks to a hand-built 567hp powerplant that
boasts 516 lb-ft of torque, and a Quickshift transmission that improves
acceleration response times and cuts gear change times to only 200
milliseconds.
Town board to lead
strategy
Sentinel, The (Stoke-on-Trent, UK): 23 November 2011
[What follows is the full text of the news story.]
A NEW partnership
has been unveiled to boost a regeneration scheme.
The All Change for
Crewe Partnership Board has been formed to provide private sector leadership to
the All Change for Crewe strategy, which aims to make the area an "economic
powerhouse" by 2031.
It hopes to
develop the town to improve its economy and conditions for residents.
The new board is
being led by John Lea, managing director of Crewe-based Morning Foods, and
includes representatives from Bentley Motors, Manchester Metropolitan
University and the Homes and Communities Agency A further place has been
allocated on the board for a representative of the rail industry. Mr Lea, High
Sheriff of Cheshire, said: "It''s good to see private and public sectors
working together to harness the drive and enthusiasm which will help to promote
the strategic development of our town and ensure the exciting and ambitious
plans are fully implemented so Crewe and its immediate area can achieve its
full economic potential."
Bayley hits Wickstead
for six in Duke romp ; Crewe Regional
Sentinel, The (Stoke-on-Trent, UK): 22 November 2011
[What follows is the full text of the news story.]
ADAM Bayley hit a
double hat-trick as FC Duke went goal crazy in the Division One Knockout Cup.
The leaders
hammered Wickstead 13-2 as they continued their quest for League and Cup glory.
Ben Fletcher and
Shane Wild both fired braces for Duke, while Charlie Mains, Carl Everall and
David Daintith made up the scorers. Rory Saunders replied for Wickstead. Flying
Lady were also in form in front of goal as they hit seven against Boot and Shoe
Villa.
Ben Magraw and
Paul Rimmer claimed doubles and there were other goals for Ben Roscoe, Ryan
Jardine and Simon Lesley in a 7-1 triumph.
PJ Hudson and
Malcolm Bostock also scored braces as Crewe Athletic beat OCEAN 4-1. Steve
Pattinson (2) and Alex Capper were on the mark for AFC Lamb, who progressed to
the second round with a 3- 1 win over Cheshire Blades.
Adam Lee, Ben Cox
and Isaac Thaw were on target for Crewe FC as they beat Union 3-2. Sam Birchall
and Keiron Banks scored for Salvador, but a Carl Boyd hat-trick and a further
goal from Josh Bendon handed WEB a 4-2 win.
White Lion Ford
Lane won a penalty shoot-out 4-2 to overcome St Mary's after the sides were
tied at 3-3 at the end of extra-time.
The formbook went
undisturbed in the Premier Knockout Cup when Bentley Motors ran out 5-4 winners
against Nantwich Wanderers.
Leroy Jones hit a
hat-trick of headers for the Motormen.
Nantwich Young
Farmers sprung a surprise as a Callum Hassall hat- trick helped them to a 5-1
win over AFC Ruskin.
And goals from
Steve Gallimore and Wayne Watson handed Betley a shock 2-1 success over
second-placed Crewe Diamonds.
Railway Hotel
thrashed Wrenbury 6-2 with John Stove, Adam Parker, Liam Jones, Jack Johnson
and Adam Langstrom (2) getting on the scoresheet. In the only game played in
the Premier Division, Wick polished off bottom club Nags Head Bunbury 5-1.
CURSHAWS maintained their charge at the top of the CREWE AND DISTRICT LEAGUE
with a 2-1 success over Barnton Reserves.
Lee Holdbrook and
Tom Watkin were the marksmen for the Sandbach side as they rubbed out an effort
from Jamie Aycliffe.
But Bentley's
Saturday side continue to struggle as they went down to a 3-1 loss at
Winnington Avenue.
Melvin Campbell
scored the motormen's goal, but Will Reid, Andy Denton and Emlyn Hill kept the
visitors in contention near the top of the table.
Bentley hit top
speed in drive for Premier title ; Crewe Regional Lge
Sentinel, The (Stoke-on-Trent, UK): 15 November 2011
[What follows is the full text of the news story.]
BENTLEY Motors
extended their Premier Division lead by beating Willaston White Star 4-0. Dave
Thomasson, John Offie, Steve Flattner and John Scarlett were on the mark for
the Motormen.
Crewe Diamonds
claimed second spot from Square One after beating their rivals 6-4. Frontmen
Chris Hardman and John Bebbington scored hat-tricks for Diamonds and Square One
respectively.
However, further
strikes from Alex Aldington, Conah Burns and Tommy Derricutt ensured Diamonds
claimed the points.
Fourth-placed AFC
Ruskin continued their run of form as they picked up their sixth win of the
campaign by beating Nantwich Wanderers 3-1. Rob Taylor, Nick Harvey and Christ
Frost were the scorers for the home side.
Joss Ruane was
another top-flight hat-trick marksman as Railway beat Wick 5-3. Matthew Cope,
Lewis James and Lawrence James were on the sheet for Acton Town, but Luke
Heritage, Dan Ball and Adam Vernon hit back for Nags Head Bunbury to force a
3-3 draw.
And Wrenbury beat
White Lion 4-1 with Kevin Sharp and Lee Mellor both netting doubles. Division
One leaders FC Duke stayed four points clear after beating Wickstead 3-0 with
goals from Simon Everall, Shane Wild and Adam Bailey.
But second-placed
Crewe Athletic did their goal difference a power of good with an 11-3 thrashing
of WEB helped by a five-goal haul from Joss Clark.
Aaron Jones (2),
Gareth Jones, Dom Marshall, PJ Hudson and Danny Rogerson made up the Athletic
tally.
Flying Lady came
from behind to beat Boot and Shoe Villa 3-2 with goals from Ben Roscoe, David
Yoxall and Steve Nurton.
AFC Lamb defied
the form book by beating Crewe FC 5-2, while Dave Tonkin hit a hat-trick for
Faddiley, but couldn't prevent them losing 7-4 to Cheshire Blades.
And Union proved
too strong for White Lion Ford Lane as they ran out 3-1 winners with Scott
Griffiths, Simon Evans and an own goal making up the tally.
Bentley's Saturday
team continue to struggle in the CREWE AND DISTRICT LEAGUE after losing their
seventh game of the season, this time at Barnton Reserves.
Leon Payne fired
home for the Motormen, but Eamon Byrne and Shaun Ryder stepped on the pressure
for the Northwich area side who claimed a 2-1 win.
But while Bentley
languish third from bottom, Sandbach Town are up to fourth after a 2-1 win at
Malpas Reserves.
Steve Gumby and
Sam Thomas were the Sandbach marksmen with Rob Martin replying for Malpas.
Bentley's coup
captures GT spirit
Western Morning News (UK): 11 November 2011
[What follows is the full text of the news story.]
The recent grant
allocation of 3 million from the Government's regional growth fund will
enable Bentley Motors UK to continue to develop powerful luxurious cars like
the Continental GT.
Or its sister, the
Supersports Convertible ISR which driven by Finland's four times world rally
champion Juha Kankkunen set an ice speed record of 205.48mph.
I could not claim
anywhere near that speed in the Continental GT I road tested this week but it
is possible to hear the incredible power even when standing still.
The pulsating
bubbling tone of the 6-litre twin turbocharged engine has the brawn to
instantly overtake when appropriate but will also sedately inch forward in
heavy traffic.
Originally
introduced in 2003, the new Continental GT four-seat coup builds on the
success of its iconic predecessor, capturing that GT spirit but with even
higher standards of design, engineering, luxury, craftsmanship, dynamic
performance, everyday practicality and refinement.
The new Continental
has a more sculpted body and sharp power lines but what seemed to make passers
by pause, stare and point was the unique headlamps. The LED daytime running
lights look like glistening jewels.
Typical to coup
styling the doors are very wide and very heavy and what doesn't help with
getting in and out is the position of the internal door openers. They are
located towards the front of the car so there is insufficient leverage to open
the doors properly.
The luxurious
interior has a bold, sweeping dashboard and instrument panel finished in
premium, soft-touch leather hides, walnut brown fascias and satin metal trim.
Distinctive
cobra-design seats are long for added comfort with side supports.
There is a new
larger than normal touchscreen, 30GB infotainment system with advanced
satellite navigation with dynamic route guidance, seven-digit postcode entry
and Google Map compatibility. The audio system has exceptional sound
reproduction and there are controls on the steering wheel.
I had the pleasure
a few years ago of being instructed by Mr Kankkunen on how to drive on ice in
the Continental and this new model with four wheel drive is even better with
increased front and rear track improving grip and stability.
There are also
improved safety systems to cope with the more powerful 567 bhp engine.
The 0-60mph time
of 4.4 seconds might be the main criteria for some new buyers but what I really
liked about the Continental GT is its gentleness. There is so much traffic on
the road that its ability to placidly glide forward and reach a steady full
stop far outweighs the need for its speed capabilities.
However, I have
taken the Continental on the track and when weaving in and out of cones at high
speed it has little body roll and taut handling. And the bonus is the risqu
roar of the deep exhaust notes.
Bentley promises a
new highoutput, high-efficiency V8 engine later this year for the Continental
GT. I can't wait.

Sentinel, The (Stoke-on-Trent, UK): 08 November 2011
[What follows is the full text of the news story.]
BENTLEY Motors had
the brakes applied to their title charge when they were surprised by lowly
Wick.
Andrew Betteley
struck twice as the Motormen lost 2-0. Their slip allowed Square One and Crewe
Diamonds to close the gap on the Premier Division leaders.
Square won by the
same score at Nantwich Young Farmers with goals from Jason Nolan and Mike
Chesters. Diamonds, meanwhile, edged Acton Town 2-1 with Chris Hardman and
Mhattat Abdou on the scoresheet.
AFC Ruskin moved
up to fourth after trouncing White Lion 5-1, helped by a hat-trick from Robert
Taylor.
Elsewhere, Mike
Blundell and Daniel Croft netted for Willaston Star as they beat Betley 2-0 to
register their fourth win of the season.
Nags Head Bunbury
finally picked up their first win as they edged Nantwich Wanderers 2-1 with
goals from Sam Winters and Nick Ball.
Division One
leaders FC Duke thrashed WEB 5-1 with goals from Shane Wild, Matthew Roberts,
Ben Fletcher, Carl Everall and Charlie Main. Anthony Owo grabbed a consolation
goal for WEB.
But second-placed

without reply against hapless White Lion Ford Lane.
PJ Hudson, Warren

Lee Degnen, Nathan Tickle and Aaron Jones. Dan Stone got the only goal of the
game as Boot and Shoe Villa saw off Faddiley.

BENTLEY Motors were
given a rough ride by lowly Acton Town before claiming a 4-2 win which keeps
them out in front in the Premier Division title race.
Simon Evans netted
twice either side of half-time to put the Motormen in control, and Leroy Jones
looked to have sealed the win with a third goal.
Aidy Socha fired
in a brace to give Acton hope, but Steven Flehuer's strike sandwiched in
between the two home efforts ensured a seventh win of the campaign for Bentley.
They are four
points clear of second-placed Square One, who kept in touch by winning 4-1 at
Wrenbury.
However, Crewe
Diamonds' progress was checked when they had to settle for a point from a
12-goal encounter with Willaston White Star.
Aiden Haughton and
Chris Hardman netted doubles for Diamonds, who also had James Nolan and an own
goal making up the scoresheet.
But Willaston
replied with braces from Mike Blundell and Daniel Croft and further strikes
from Rick Goddard and Jason Pritchard.
AFC Ruskin

Jonathan Maxwell and Vinny Pownall.

Rogers and Dan Ball hit back for the visitors. FC Duke are averaging almost
seven goals a game as they leave the opposition trailing in Division One.
While they were
restricted to four on Sunday, keeper Wes Newton demonstrated how the leaders
spread the goals around by running up the other end to score a free-kick.
Carl Everall,
Shane Wild and James Donegan were also on target in a 4-1 win.
Crewe Athletic
remain in title contention after they saw off local rivals Crewe FC 6-3.
Malcolm Bostock, Gareth Jones, Warren Hudson, PJ Hudson, Josh Clark and Mike
Nixon made up the tally for Athletic, while Nathan Quinn, Tom Darby and Ben Cox
replied for the visitors.
OCEAN moved up to
third place in the table after a 2-0 win over Cheshire Blades with goals from
Carl Greatbanks and Luke Kennedy.
Rory Saunders
netted twice and Garry Gordon was also on the mark as Wickstead beat Boot and
Shoe Villa 3-0.
Flying Lady
avenged a recent defeat against St Mary's by thrashing the same opponents 6-1
helped by a hattrick from Simon Lesley. Ryan Jardine, Paul Rimmer and Nathan
Guthrie scored the other goals.
MMU Cheshire are
up to fourth place in the CREWE AND DISTRICT SATURDAY LEAGUE after goals from
Oliver White (2), Maclolm Colley, Wayne Hardy and Andy Horbury earned them a

And there was no
travel sickness from the Flying Lady lads, who returned from Salvador 3-1

St Marys were left

UK: Bentley achieves auto energy management first
just-auto.com
09 November 2011
By Graeme Roberts
|
[What follows is
the full text of the article.] Volkswagen
Group's Bentley Motors unit on Wednesday announced its Crewe factory has
become the first UK automotive plant to achieve the new energy management
standard, ISO 50001. "The
accreditation recognises the company’s continuous improvement in
energy efficiency, reflecting the long-term commitment of Bentley to reduce
its overall environmental impact," the automaker said. The award of the
new ISO 50001 benchmark – which has only been in existence for a
few months – was the result of a complex audit carried out by independent
certification and verification authority, Lloyds Register Quality Assurance
(LRQA). To achieve the new global standard, Bentley had to demonstrate
improved energy performance, including energy efficiency, use, and
consumption leading to reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, energy costs,
and other related environmental impacts. A significant
proportion of the GBP1bn invested in the historic Pyms Lane site since the
purchase by VW in 1998 has been devoted to environmental improvements. Even
though car production increased 10-fold between 2002 and 2007 [largely thanks
to the launch of the Continnental line], there has been no commensurate
increase in environmental impact. A series of
initiatives have been undertaken including improved heating and lighting,
better controlled boiler and compressed air systems, greater insulation and
more efficient variable speed drives. The results have been significant,
Bentley said. Between 2000 and 2010 the energy used on site for each car
produced was reduced by two thirds, and by 14% for the overall site. This has
delivered savings of 230GWh of energy – enough to power 11,500
houses for a year. In other areas,
Bentley is also reducing the impact of its plant on the environment. The
waste recovery and recycling strategy is currently achieving a recycling rate
of 77%, quickly approaching the target of 80% recycling. Water usage is also
being reduced. A major part of the body coating process, water usage has been
halved over the past decade with plans to improve this performance still
further. Bentley
manufacturing chief Michael Straughan said: “Achieving ISO 50001 is
a tremendous achievement. We are extremely proud to be the first UK
automotive plant to achieve this distinction which is even more remarkable
given the age of so many of our buildings. It is a tribute to the efforts of
everyone here in looking for new and innovative ways to improve the energy
performance of our facilities and I know this commitment will continue. “Bentley’s
commitment to improved environmental performance goes beyond the factory
itself. In 2008 we announced an environmental strategy for our products which
is delivering a fleet reduction in CO2 of over 15% in four years and the
introduction of a new powertrain which, by itself, improves fuel economy by
40%. Added to this is a production volume 90% of which is compatible with
sustainable biofuels. We are determined that Bentley should be the leader of
the high luxury automotive sector in terms of environmental performance.” The award comes
at the same time as a separate re-certification of environmental management
to ISO 14001. Bentley was the first UK automotive plant to achieve that
benchmark in 1999. The Crewe plant
dates back to 1938 when it was constructed to build the famous Merlin
aeroplane engines for the RAF during the second world war. It switched to car
production in 1946. This article was

Bentley board member leads Cheshire and Warrington investment drive
Property Week
15 April 2011
|
[What follows is
the full text of the article.] Christine
Gaskell, the inaugural chairman of the local enterprise partnership (LEP) for
Cheshire and Warrington, is keen to point out that the fledgling organisation
is not a replacement for the wealthy Northwest Regional Development Agency
and cannot fund projects directly. In her day job,
Gaskell (right) is a board member of Bentley Motors in Crewe, an employer of
no fewer than 3,500 people. "The first thing
is to get together as a board and understand our priorities. We cannot do
everything and we have no funding, as such. Our role is to direct rather than
fund and deliver," says Gaskell. The LEP is
supported with funding and staff from the three local authorities of Cheshire
East, Cheshire West and Chester, and Warrington. Also on the
board are Graham Ramsbottom, managing director of the Grosvenor Estate, which
includes the country seat of the Duke of Westminster, at Eaton Hall near
Chester, and Louise Morrissey, land director of Peel Group, which has
extensive holdings in the area, especially on the southern banks of the
Manchester Ship Canal. "Among our priorities is the drive to create
high-value employment," explains Gaskell, who cites AstraZeneca's Cheshire
bases as an example of the employers that need protecting. The LEP formally
came into being at the first board meeting on Saturday 12 March, during which
session Gaskell was elected chairman. Gaskell says the
LEP would consider whether to bid for an enterprise zone for Crewe in the
next round of zones, which are due to be announced by government in the
summer. Cheshire East
Council has plans for a mixed-use redevelopment of the area around Crewe
railway station, where it bought a 4.5 acre site from Royal Mail for [pounds
sterling]2.75m in January. At Basford East and West, a combined development
opportunity of 370 acres, the council has reserved plots for employment uses.
These would be accessed by the planned Crewe Green Link Road, which is yet to
gain funding.
