Viscotek HT-GPC
Measures Critical Parameters For Polyolefins
Industry 2.0, The
(India): 18 August 2011
[What follows is
the full text of the news story.]
India, Aug. 18 -- Malvern
Instruments has launched the Viscotek HT-GPC (high temperature gel permeation
chromatography) system.
The system
requires no user interventions for sample filtering and is specified for safe,
routine operation at the high temperatures (160oC) necessary for analyzing
polyethylene and polypropylene.
The system
measures absolute molecular weight, molecular weight distribution, and polymer
chain branching in just a single experiment. These are critical parameters for polyolefins
that influence in-use properties such as strength and permeability.
The full Viscotek
HT-GPC triple detector configuration includes refractive index (RI), viscometry
and low angle light scattering (LALS) detection. Together these detectors provide
absolute molecular weight without extrapolation or correction, molecular size,
intrinsic viscosity and branching information. Three alternative detector
configurations are also available: RI alone, RI and LALS, and RI and
viscometer.
The product has a
modular design that enhances flexibility, reliability and ease of maintenance.
This unit consists of an integrated autosampling device and heated mulitvial
stirrer that dissolves and automatically injects the sample, eliminating the

With the launch of
www.materials-talks.com the Malvern Instruments team have opened a new global
channel through which they can share their thoughts, opinions, experience and
expertise, and readers are most definitely encouraged to share back.
Tasked with
writing an early blog on why Malvern Instruments has elected to embrace social
media, Product Group Manager Paul Kippax said: "I found myself researching
"How to win friends and influence people" by Dale Carnegie, because -
in the true spirit of social media transparency - that is what I'd like to
achieve. However, my colleagues and I are keen to ensure that this translates
into a real, value-added service that is genuinely engaging and useful, whether
people have known Malvern for a long time, have just acquired a Malvern
product, or even if they are using another manufacturer's system but want to
know more about what Malvern is up to and more about the field of materials
characterization."
The first blog
postings went live in November and, with so much to say in this fascinating
arena, the intention is to update the blog at least twice a week. Malvern wants
to hear what readers think and invites suggestions for topics people want to
see covered.
Imperial College study on Malvern Instruments' SEC
throws light on protein content of sample
Express Pharma
16 January 2011
[What follows is the full text of the article.]
Our News Bureau Mumbai
Understanding
membrane protein crystallisation is one of the main goals of molecular biology
studies aimed at the structural characterisation of proteins. Now, work
performed by Malvern Instruments in conjunction with the Membrane Protein
Laboratory at London's Imperial College, has been published as an application
note which outlines a method capable of providing insight into the likelihood
of crystallisation of a sample and its protein content. 'Analysis of membrane
protein by multi-detector SEC' describes how the Viscotek TDAmax size exclusion
chromatography (SEC) system was used to characterise and optimise the
proportion of protein and detergent in a purified membrane protein sample. It
can be freely downloaded at: http://www.malvern.com/membraneproteins/ MRK1499.
Crystallisation of a membrane protein can depend on many factors, such as
protein purity and the detergent concentration or type. Removing too much of
the detergent component of a membrane protein complex can lead to degradation
of the protein and reduce the chances of crystallisation.
In this
application note, the protein detergent complex (PDC), a bacterial membrane protein
involved in multidrug resistance, is characterised using the Viscotek TDAmax
system, a complete size-exclusion chromatography system with refractive index
(RI), ultraviolet (UV), light scattering (LS) and intrinsic viscosity (IV)
detectors. The molecular weight of the PDC and of the free detergent n-dodecyl
-Dmaltoside (DDM) micelles was measured.
Furthermore, the
composition of the PDC, in terms of protein and DDM content, was measured and
found to be very close to expectations. Size Exclusion Chromatography is the
technique of choice for rapid and reliable characterisation of molecular weight
and molecular structure for all types of macromolecules, including proteins.

Malvern
Instruments experts win industry poster award at DDL21
Express Pharma
01 January 2011
[What follows is
the full text of the article.]
This year's Drug
Delivery to the Lungs conference was a resounding success for Malvern
Instruments with Deborah Huck, Malvern's Product Technical Specialist for
imaging, and co-authors scooping the industry poster award for,
"Characterising a nasal spray formulation from droplet to API particle
size." The prize was presented to the team by Jolyon Mitchell of Trudell
Medical International and highlights Malvern's active development of analytical
instrumentation for inhaled product applications.
The poster
contributed by Deborah Huck, Anne Virden, Paul Kippax and Carl Levoguer
examined the use of automated image analysis and laser diffraction for
characterising nasal spray formulations. The use of imaging and Raman
spectroscopy together, in Malvern's new Morphologi G3-ID system, was viewed as
'revolutionary' by the poster judging panel, offering researchers a unique tool
for understanding the degree of interaction between APIs and excipients within
OINDP formulations.
These highly
complementary techniques have applications for a variety of inhaled products.
Dry powder inhaler development, which demands detailed study of the dynamics of
powder entrainment and dispersion, as well as an understanding of the structure
of the delivered particles, offers another example. Techniques which can follow
the process of particle dispersion, and then identify which species have been
dispersed to a respirable particle size, can offer significant benefits,
especially when developing new combination therapies.
