Sept. 13, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Bosch is donating a variety of energy-efficient
and sustainable products - totaling $115,000 - to 12 college teams
participating in the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon 2011, to be held
Sept. 23 through Oct. 2, in Washington, D.C. The competition is comprised of 19
teams that design, build and operate solar-powered homes that are cost
effective, energy-efficient and attractive.
Donations from
Bosch Home Appliances, Power Tools, Solar Energy and Thermotechnology are being
given to the teams to help them showcase their best ideas. The Solar Decathlon,
which is free and open to the public, will take place on the National Mall's
West Potomac Park in Washington, D.C.
"As a leading
technology and services company, Bosch is excited to support 12 teams and be a
sponsor of the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon 2011 as we
collectively strive to advance efficient, renewable energy products for home
use," said Peter Marks, chairman, president and CEO, Robert Bosch LLC and
member of the Bosch Board of Management. "The Solar Decathlon not only
challenges the students to innovate, it also reaches out to the public,
inviting them to tour the prototype homes, and encourages all of us to consider
how energy-saving technologies can be applied in our own lives."
"Bosch has a
long history dedicated to sustainability and we remain focused on providing
safe, clean and efficient products that help protect the environment, conserve
resources, and reduce emissions and our dependence on fossil fuels."

FleXHouse Headed
to D.C. for Competition
Targeted News
Service: 13 September 2011
[What follows is the full text of the news story.]
TAMPA, Fla., Sept.
13 -- The University of South Florida issued the following news release:
The University of
South Florida has partnered with the University of Florida, University of
Central Florida and Florida State University to participate in an international
competition focused on energy efficiency and innovation.
Called Team
Florida, the four schools worked together to create FLeX House -- a
sustainable, stand-alone, portable, self-sufficient home meant for a couple or
a small family. ??The team will leave for Washington, D.C.Sept. 14 to
participate in the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon - a world-wide
competition.
The design of the
house is specific to Florida's hot and humid climate. Borrowing from the
Florida Cracker houses built near the turn of the 20th century, the home has an
umbrella-like structure that prevents heat from becoming trapped within the
structure. The classic architecture is juxtaposed with solar panels that
provide the electricity - allowing the house to essentially power itself.
USF School of
Architecture and Community Design Professor Stanley Russell said participating
in Team Florida aligns well with USF's personal goals.
"USF is
promoting itself as a green campus and a university interested in renewable
energy and sustainability," said Stanley Russell, USF School of
Architecture and Community Design professor. "So this is perfect for our
image."
Houses from all
teams will be on display from Sept. 23 to Oct. 2. After the competition, FLeX
House will travel back to Florida and become the Zero Energy House Learning Center,
where it will raise awareness about sustainability and climatically responsible
homes.
For more
information or to track FLeX House's progress, go to flexhouse.org or check out
the project on Facebook.

A Pembroke modular
home builder is taking its energy efficient homes on the road. Epoch Homes, in
collaboration with the Massachusetts College of Art and Design Department of
Architecture and the University of Massachusetts at Lowell, will compete as
Team Massachusetts in the Solar Decathlon 4D Home completion.
The Solar
Decathlon, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, is a competition to come
up with a home that is the best combination of energy-efficient construction,
comfort and affordability. Twenty teams from around the world will assemble
their houses on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., between Sept. 23 and
Oct. 2.
The goal, said
Epoch CEO John Ela, is to design and build a home that not only uses no energy
but also gives back to the grid. To do that, the sun will power the
1,000-square-foot home. The house will also be outfitted with super-insulated
walls and windows, Ela said, making it virtually air-tight. Another unique
feature of the house is the flexible floor plan with movable interior walls, he
said. This feature allows the home to grow and change with the family.
Ela said the team finished the house in about three weeks. When the
competition is over, the home will go to a family in Maine.

[What follows is
the full text of the article.]
SPORTS and leisure
chain Decathlon is focusing on Greater Manchester for expansion as it looks to
open 10 UK outlets a year.
French-owned
Decathlon has a branch in Stockport and is to open a store at Warrington's
PS30m Orford Park project by the end of the year, creating up to 100 jobs.
Decathlon
currently operates nine stores in the UK and aims to take its portfolio to over
100 within a decade.
Steve Dykes, the
chain's UK chief executive, who hails from Wigan, said Decathlon was eyeing
sites around north Manchester as part of its growth plans as well as other
parts of the region.
Mr Dykes, who was
on the verge of Wigan Athletic's first team when his soccer career was cut
short through injury at the age of 18, said: "The UK has massive potential
and the north west is a key expansion market for us."
Decathlon
currently employs nearly 1,000 people in the UK, where it generates revenues of
around PS100m a year. The Orford Park store will initially occupy three acres
of a 50-acre regeneration scheme but could be doubled in size eventually.

[What follows is

Saint-Gobain, a
building materials company, has announced its support of the 2011 Solar
Decathlon team from Massachusetts College of Art and Design and University of
Massachusetts Lowell.
Known as Team
Massachusetts, the Company said that the students will compete for the first
time in The U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon, a biennial event that
challenges collegiate teams from around the world to design, build, and operate
solar-powered houses that are energy-efficient, and attractive.
According to a
release, as a lead sponsor, Saint-Gobain has donated a mix of more than 30
building products, from its key subsidiary CertainTeed Corp., North America's
manufacturer of exterior and interior building products, as well as from its other
businesses: Saint-Gobain Abrasives, Saint-Gobain ADFORS, Saint-Gobain
Performance Plastics, and Norandex. In addition to product support, the company
offered building science expertise to assist Team Massachusetts in constructing
a house that adjusts to a homeowner's shifting needs, environment, and economic
state.
"We are
inspired by Team Massachusetts' efforts and share its vision that we should
collectively seek to expect more from our buildings making them more efficient,
durable, sustainable and healthy," said Gilles Colas, President and CEO of
Saint-Gobain Corp. "We embrace the opportunity to help advance the team's
goals of building a super-efficient home of the future by providing them with a
wide range of innovative products available today from the Saint-Gobain family
of companies."
As Team
Massachusetts set out to build an ultra-efficient house that could effectively
compete against some of the best student teams from across the globe, the team
recognized Saint-Gobain and its family of companies could help enhance its
efficiency goals.
"We are
grateful to Saint-Gobain and CertainTeed for their generous support including
products and expertise," said Spencer Culhane, an architecture student at
Massachusetts College of Art and Design and the project manager for Team
Massachusetts. "In identifying and selecting our lead sponsors, it was
critical that our partners share in our belief that efficient technology and
passive strategies are in fact attainable when building a home today, and we
found this with Saint-Gobain and CertainTeed."
Saint Gobain noted
that products selected to help Team Massachusetts achieve its energy
efficiency, sustainability and affordability goals include:
CertaSpray Foam
Insulation from CertainTeed is sprayed into a building cavity and expands to
fill openings that may potentially leak air. The foam insulation provides an
effective seal, which lowers energy loss and bolsters indoor air quality.
In the case of the
4D Home, CertainTeed recommended that Team Massachusetts implement a hybrid
insulation system that combines four inches of CertaSpray Foam on the backside
of the home's sheathing with CertainTeed's OPTIMA Fiberglass Insulation filling
the remainder of the cavity. This approach delivers an R-value that is almost
equivalent to a passive house at a significant cost savings compared to a
foam-only approach.
In addition, the
Company noted that a number of products used inside the 4D Home are helping to
enhance the indoor environment quality (IEQ), including:
CertainTeed Fiber
Cement Backer Board retains the rigidity of cement, but its fiber components
make the board much lighter than traditional all cement backer board. The
board's dense, non-porous surface make it ideal for moisture resistance, and it
is also made of 40 percent post-consumer recycled content.
CertainTeed
Diamondback Tile Backer is gypsum-based so it is lighter and less brittle,
which helps to prevent joint cracking. And, because it is reinforced with glass
instead of paper, it too is mold resistant, making it ideal for the kitchen and
bathroom walls inside the 4D Home.
A number of
products from the FibaTape line from Saint-Gobain ADFORS were also used to
boost the indoor environment quality. Unlike traditional paper tape which is
susceptible to mold growth, FibaTape is made of fiberglass offering mold
resistance.
While the
environment inside the home is essential, the Company said that Team
Massachusetts will also be evaluated in the Decathlon competition on the
attractiveness of the home. To help in this effort, the team turned to
solutions from CertainTeed that are both aesthetic and functional:
CertainTeed
WeatherBoards Fiber Cement Siding looks and feels more like real wood than any
other fiber cement siding on the market. Made using a combination of fly ash,
Portland cement, wood fiber and specialty additives, the enhanced formula
creates an environmentally friendly and durable product with a high recycled
content.
Team Massachusetts
selected the synthetic decking CertainTeed EverNew LT Cellular PVC Decking Line
because it combined the desired look of exotic hardwood decking but without the
costly, time-consuming maintenance that natural wood requires.
Team Massachusetts
and 18 other collegiate teams will display their homes on the National Mall's
West Potomac Park in Washington, DC, Sept. 23 - Oct. 2. Open to the public free
of charge, visitors can tour the houses, gather ideas to use in their own
homes, and learn how energy-saving features can help them save money.
Saint-Gobain, a
building materials company is committed to inventing solutions to help
professionals and communities around the world build and renovate comfortable,
healthy, economical and energy efficient buildings.
Through the
responsible development of sustainable building products, CertainTeed is a
brand of exterior and interior building products, including roofing, siding,
fence, decking, railing, trim, foundations, pipe, insulation, gypsum, ceilings
and access covers.
Massachusetts
College of Art and Design (MassArt) is a public college of art and design.
University of Massachusetts Lowell (UMASS Lowell) focuses on science,
engineering, and technology.
