Sabahi campaigner missing for five days

Daily News Egypt

25 August 2011

[What follows is the full text of the news story.]

CAIRO: A campaigner for presidential hopeful Hamdeen Sabahi in Alexandria, Islam Hafez, has been missing since Sunday, Sabahi's campaign media coordinator in Alexandria Hany Shalaby told Daily News Egypt Thursday.

Hafez was allegedly taken from in front of Cairo's main railway station, but there are no confirmed reports that he has been abducted. He last updated his Twitter account a little after 1 am on Monday.

"Hafez usually disappears and it turns out that he was hanging out somewhere. No signs he is abducted, we cannot jump to conclusions," Shalaby told DNE.

"But we contacted his family and they said they know nothing about him, but this does not mean he is abducted," Shalaby said.

A Facebook group dedicated to Hafez asked the ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) to find out Hafez's whereabouts.

"We did not accuse any entity including the SCAF of abducting him, so we have to wait because there is a 90 percent possibility that nothing wrong happened to him," Shalaby said.

Hafez said on his Twitter account one week before disappearing that rapper and El-Fara'een Channel TV host Ahmed Spider threatened to kill him when Hafez implied that he will expose his "dirty history" in a reaction to Spider's continued targeting of activists.

Spider recently threatened on air to file a complaint against activist Asmaa Mahfouz who was summoned by military prosecution for insulting the military and was released on LE 20,000 with before being pardoned by SCAF.

"I will file a complaint at the Prosecutor General's office against anyone who targets Egypt's honorable youth," Hafez said on his Twitter account.

"I will restore my right by law because I am not a barbarian," he added.

Earlier this week, ElBaradie campaigner in Alexandria Mahmoud Shaaban was released after claiming to have been abducted by members of the dissolved state security apparatus.

Shaaban filed a complaint to the Prosecutor General holding accountable the Head of the National Security apparatus, the Minister of Interior and Alexandria's military commander for his abduction.

Obesity linked with heart rhythm disorder

Sri Lanka Sunday Observer

21 August 2011

[What follows is the full text of the news story.]

Sri Lanka, Aug. 21 -- Obesity directly causes electrical abnormalities of the heart.

There is growing evidence that obesity changes the structure and size of the heart muscle and the way it works and contracts, as well as its electrical function.

The latter leads to atrial fibrillation, the most common heart rhythm disorder in the world, affecting 10% of people over 75 years of age.

Dr Hany Abed a cardialogist is working with the University of Adelaide'sCentre for Heart Rhythm Disorders and the Discipline of Medicine to ascertain how obesity affects the heart and whether losing weight can actually reduce the risk of developing atrial fibrillation.

"We already know that obesity causes an increase in blood pressure and puts strain on the heart. Current basic laboratory research using a sheep model also shows that obesity causes electrical abnormalities in the heart chamber," Dr Abed says.

Hospital admissions due to atrial fibrillation have more than tripled in Australia over the past 15 years with older, overweight men at most risk. The condition is also linked directly to strokes and heart attacks.

"It is now more common to be admitted to hospital with atrial fibrillation than it is for heart failure," Dr Abed says.

"The problem with atrial fibrillation is that it is usually picked up incidentally, in health check-ups, or when someone suffers dizzy spells, heart palpitations and chest pains. Unfortunately, often the first sign of this heart rhythm disorder is when someone has a stroke."

Dr Abed says the health sector estimates that two thirds of the incidence of atrial fibrillation expected by 2020 will be solely due to obesity.

"Unless we tackle the obesity problem it will be like trying to rescue the deck chairs from the Titanic."

He says while obesity is not restricted to an age group, those most at risk of atrial fibrillation the elderly are becoming fatter and therefore escalating their chances of developing the heart disorder.

"The costs to the health system and the community are enormous.

However, early results in our research show that atrial fibrillation can be reversed if people lose weight."

Bijje: Small village has big hoop expectations

Daily Star, The (Beirut, Lebanon)

04 August 2011

By By Dany Abboud, The Daily Star, Beirut, Lebanon

[What follows is the full text of the news story.]

Aug. 04--BEIRUT -- Bejjeh, a beautiful village 8 kilometers away from Jbeil, isn't the kind of town you would expect to see a basketball club within the top division of the Lebanese league.

Snatching the Division Two title last May, after beating Tebnine in the final series 2-0, Bejjeh will be rubbing shoulders Asian champions and seasoned internationals in Division One next season.

They have a collection of experienced players, led by local coach Tony Kara, such as Joe Mansour, David Derghyiyan, Hany Zakaria and Jason Kozah who have already made a name for themselves thanks to their contributions several years ago with teams such as Sagesse, Mouttahed Tripoli and Kahraba.

"It's a dream come true" said Saad Saad, manager of the basketball team and member of the sports committee.

"Few people were expecting us to reach this level, we are now like idols to the young generation here in Jbeil."

Saad admitted that the next phase is "a lot harder and more demanding, and the players will have to work harder to maintain the level we have got to the past season."

"We know that the responsibility is growing on our shoulders," Saad told The Daily Star.

Bejjeh was at the center of rumors circulating around the future of Sagesse, after local reports revealed that the then-president of the "Green Castle," Lebanese businessman Talal Makdessi, was seriously considering a move to Jbeil.

Makdessi told The Daily Star at a news conference that "I will surely be at Bejjeh next season and all the players who are not able to stay at Sagesse will move to Bejjeh."

However, Saad revealed that three players from Sagesse are officially now with Bejjeh, -- Tom Ammar and Ali Barada who were on loan to local rivals Byblos last season, and Charbel Sokhn. In addition, the management decided to keep Derghyiyan and Zakaria from the old team and release Joe Mansour and Jason Kozah who will represent Amchit club, a new representative for Jbeil in Division Two.

He also mentioned that they are in negotiations with two high level players on the Elite Players List. Close sources revealed to The Daily Star that these two players are Nadim Souaid and Daniel Faris.

"The club hasn't yet decided on the head coach for the coming season but we are considering two names, one of them is an international coach," Saad explained. Bejjeh will be working with a budget that is believed to be between $550,000 and $600,000.

Lebanese fans have always enjoyed the Beirut rivalry between Sagesse and Riyadi, and a new rivalry appeared last year in Zahle between Anibal and Haouch al-Oumara. This season will see the beginning of a another rivalry in Jbeil, between Byblos and Bejjeh.

Saad indicated that "this [rivalry] is really exciting for the people of Jbeil, we and Byblos are brothers, but it's going to be fun to watch."
