INDIAN ECONOMIC OVERVIEW

 

India is developing into an open-market economy, yet traces of its past autarkic policies remain. Economic liberalization, including industrial deregulation, privatization of state-owned enterprises, and reduced controls on foreign trade and investment, began in the early 1990s and has served to accelerate the country's growth, which has averaged more than 7% per year since 1997. India's diverse economy encompasses traditional village farming, modern agriculture, handicrafts, a wide range of modern industries, and a multitude of services. Slightly more than half of the work force is in agriculture, but services are the major source of economic growth, accounting for more than half of India's output, with only one-third of its labor force. India has capitalized on its large educated English-speaking population to become a major exporter of information technology services and software workers. In 2010, the Indian economy rebounded robustly from the global financial crisis - in large part because of strong domestic demand - and growth exceeded 8% year-on-year in real terms. However, India's economic growth in 2011 slowed because of persistently high inflation and interest rates and little progress on economic reforms. High international crude prices have exacerbated the government's fuel subsidy expenditures contributing to a higher fiscal deficit, and a worsening current account deficit. Little economic reform took place in 2011 largely due to corruption scandals that have slowed legislative work. India's medium-term growth outlook is positive due to a young population and corresponding low dependency ratio, healthy savings and investment rates, and increasing integration into the global economy. India has many long-term challenges that it has not yet fully addressed, including widespread poverty, inadequate physical and social infrastructure, limited non-agricultural employment opportunities, scarce access to quality basic and higher education, and accommodating rural-to-urban migration.

PROFILE

 

There cannot be a person in the whole of Tamilnadu, a state in Southern part of India, who does not know about Subject and the various medical, management and physiotherapy institutes it runs.  Not to talk about the hospital that is attached to the Trust’s Medical College.  Every villager nearby is in one way or other a recipient of the treatment given by them free to the poor.  There is a big story in the formation of the trust and its medical schools.  It has political connotation, social intentions, Research and development aspect and touches a large number of lives in the state of Tamilnadu.

 

Mr. N P V Ramasamy Udayar, the founder of the trust was born on September 19, 1936, in a small town in the current Namakkal district of Tamil Nadu called Rasipuram. His meteoric rise as an industrialist was propelled by an astute business sense but even more important an untiring spirit and hard work. In the early eighties Mr. Udayar was a highly successful industrialist, respected by his colleagues, and admired even by his competitors. He himself felt that there was an unfulfilled aspiration in his heart; a desire to create something that will be a lasting benefit to the community; this desire kept burning like a fire in his heart.  The dream took a form and fruition with the help of the then Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu - Bharat Ratna Dr. M.G. Ramachandran. Out of this partnership grew the plans for the first privately owned medical college in Tamil Nadu. 

 

Both of them started a trust called the subject after the name of Mr. M G Ramachandran, the then Chief Minister of Tamilnadu. Both of them pooled in a small amount, later that grew into a Rs.12500.000 Million endowment trust.   They wanted to touch the lives of everyone. Professional education in India was reaching its pinnacle of development.  Engineering colleges were mushrooming everywhere while medical seats were in great demand.  Mr. N P V Ramaswamy Udayar saw the potential of a medical college both in terms of money it could generate and in terms of service it could offer to the poor.  His vision was a world class medical school with a hospital catering to affordable care for the poor.  On September 11th 1985, Sri Ramachandra Medical College was started in a two storey building in Vembuliamman street in Valasaravakkam. The first outpatient clinic in a make shift shed. The next few years saw the true grit of the man - his blood sweat and toil saw the creation of a world class campus out of 150 acres of farmland near the Porur lake. 1994 was a landmark year for SRMC. The college became a deemed to be university - a world class tertiary care medical centre took root. Seeds for specialties were sown. In this substrate of hard work grew institutions committed to advancing the best in the health care sciences - in dentistry and nursing and physiotherapy. It was not just growth but growth with innovation as epitomized by the allied health science program and growth with vision as epitomized by the programs in genetics and biotechnology and informatics. Throughout its short history SRMC has made its own road, creating unique ground breaking programs in the health care sciences. But this is only of the dimensions of this organization.  SRMC went to the best medical school in the world to acquire its partner in excellence. In July 1997, Mr. N.P.V. Ramasamy Udayar shook hands with Robert Crone CEO of Harvard Medical International, sealing a partnership that had grown in strength over time. Starting with student exchange the alliance has spearheaded curriculum reform, focused on health care quality and safety and leadership and faculty development.  A journey is measured by the friends we make - SRMC has made many friends and partners around the world during its journey.  The torch was passed in 1998. The journey did not end - it continued through steps some times and leaps at others. SRMC is now one of the largest private health care infrastructures in India. Today, SRMC has over 1000 faculties and three thousand students; it touches the lives of over 5000 patients each day; through its telemedicine network it reaches over 10 centers in the country; through its international wing SRHI, its reaching out to the global village; it is in the forefront of cutting edge technology - with a wireless campus, computer assisted learning, and keyhole surgery.  SRMC looks to the future today - with inspiration from its past; and the strength of its present guided by the vision and blessing of its founder and driven by a passion for excellence.   The objective and the mission of the trust have thus been achieved.

Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute was established by Subject in the year 1985 as a private not-for-profit self-financing institution and dedicated to serve the society as a centre of excellence with emphasis on medical education, research and health care. In view of its academic excellence, the Government of India declared Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute as a Deemed University in September, 1994 under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956. As notified by the UGC, the nomenclature of the institution has been changed to Sri Ramachandra University in 2006. The Trust achieved the task of establishing this Institution as a "Centre of Excellence" under the leadership of Late Mr.  N.P.V. Ramasamy Udayar who was the Founder and Managing Trustee of the Trust and also the first Chancellor of the Deemed University.

 

Mr.  V.R. Venkatachalam is currently the Chancellor of the University and is also the Managing Trustee of the Trust.  Over two decades, the institute has transformed into a fully fledged university with nine constituent colleges/faculties and around 100 courses in the health care sciences. Nearly 4000 students receive teaching and training within the University campus. Over 3500 patients seek health care in the state of the art academic medical centre.  The National Assessment and Accreditation Council, the accrediting body of the UGC, has accredited Sri Ramachandra University with "A" Grade with a CGPA of 3.52 on a 4-point scale, the highest to be awarded to a private medical University in India.


The Joint Commission International (JCI) has accredited the University teaching hospital, the first teaching hospital in India to obtain such accreditation from JCI. The Medical Council of India (MCI) has recognized and upgraded the Regional Centre in Medical Education Technologies, Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute, Sri Ramachandra University, as a Nodal Centre to conduct both Basic and Advance course in Medical Education Technologies.  The WHO has designated Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute as a WHO Collaborating Centre for Research and Training in Occupational Health.  The Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) has accredited the Biodosimetry lab of the Department of Human Genetics for assessment of personnel radiation exposure and related studies, the only non - governmental institution to have achieved such accreditation.

Dr. JSN Murthy, Vice Chancellor, Sri Ramachandra University, has been elected fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, Edinburg. He is already a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, Glasgow. An eminent cardiologist, Dr. Murthy had earlier been HOD Cardiology, SRU, and had worked in the department of cardiology, Southern Railway Hospital, Perumbur, from 1977 to 1994. He was trained in cardiology there and at the Hospital for Sick Children, Great Ormond Street, London. He was a scholar of British Council, 1987. Sri Ramachandra Medical Centre (SRMC) is a tertiary care multi-specialty university hospital. With over 1500 beds, 114 ICU beds, 25 operating rooms, and a campus spread over 175 acres (0.71 km2), SRMC is one of the largest private health care facilities in South Asia.

RESEARCH

 

Sri Ramachandra University has established a Central Research Facility to gain recognition as a centre of excellence in medical research. Prof. S.P.Thyagarajan, an internationally renowned medical scientist and former Vice-Chancellor, University of Madras, has conducted 55 research projects during his 40 years of research career, made 335 publications and written 18 books. He holds a patent for a drug formulated from an Indian medicinal plant for chronic Hepatitis B and also holds 4 more patents.  The Central Research Facility, established in the year 2007, is the “A to Z gateway” for research, to take care of all logistics of research planning, research projects administration, research documentation, besides providing a centralized sophisticated equipment facility. It includes the University-Industry Liaison Centre with IRP/Patents Cell on a ‘ready to use platform’ to the entire University. This facility in a plinth area of 25,000 sq.ft. Has a medical informatics and study design unit, Contract Clinical Trials Division, Epidemiology Research unit, Project Development and Documentation Unit, Traditional Research Unit and a University Sophisticated Instrumentation Centre. All high-tech equipments for the genomics, proteomics, spectroscopy, chromatography, radioisotope, microscopy, NMR facilities along with walk-in-cold room [4o C], cryopreservation unit [-80oC and – 146oC], cold room [-20oC] etc. are available besides a centralized administrative office. All research and development activities of the University are co-ordinated by the Pro-Chancellor [Research].


Presently there are 520 major and minor research projects operational in the University which are broadly classified as

 

  • International collaborative projects,
  • Sponsored research projects funded by national agencies like Department of Science and Technology, Department of Bio-Technology, Indian Council of Medical Research, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research etc.,
  • Industry - institutional RandD consultancy projects jointly funded by DST, industries and international agencies,
  • Multinational and multi centric clinical trials, and
  • Individual research projects by faculty and postgraduate students including Ph.D. students.

 

During the year 2007, the University has received the following International and National level research recognitions;

[ii] It is also recognized as the Training and Examination Centre for the National Examination Board of Occupational Safety and Health [NESOSH], UK,

 

[iii] The Department of Human Genetics as the "Biodosimetry Laboratory" by the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board,

 

[iv] The 'Herbal Research Laboratory" of Sri Ramachandra University as the "ICMR/AYUSH Golden Triangle Project [GTP] Centre for validation and standardization of Indian Systems of Medicine Drugs

 

[v] The PURSE-HIS Epidemiology Research Unit of DST to Department of Cardiology and Cardiac Care Centre

 

[vi] The DBT-Tissue-Engineering Unit for cardiomyocytes and chondrocytes to the departments of Cardio-thoracic surgery, Arthroscopy and Pathology.

The Department of Scientific and Industrial Research [DSIR], India has recognized Sri Ramachandra University as Scientific and Industrial Research Organization [SIRO] and the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India has provided Customs/Central Excise Duty Exemption registration to Sri Ramachandra University for 5 years.

 

Financial information:

 

The Indian Bank has set up its branch inside the campus and has extension counters in the 175 acre campus so that all students can pay their fees, patients can  pay their fees, medical charges, surgery fees and all other diagnostic fees through them.  Extension counters are set up in all major buildings out of the 123 buildings and many ATMs are inside the premises.

 

Endowment fund – The start up endowment fund was $24,717,000.  What is the increase as of date is confidential.  However many sponsoring donors have put in their share and the fund is over $ 50,000,000.

 

Income / expenditure – Unless the enquiring party writes to them personally this will not be revealed.  However discreet sources put income over Rs.50000.000 Millions. This is however a very conservative estimate.

 

Financial position – A cash rich institution which has not loan outstanding at al. the campus which is 175 acres and 123 buildings big belongs to the college.
