MANAGEMENT DISCUSSION AND ANALYSIS REPORT

INDUSTRY STRUCTURE AND DEVELOPMENTS

With 845 million subscribers and a teledensity of over 70 percent, the Indian telecom sector is poised to place itself as a significant contributory in the GDP of the country over coming years.

The market is very competitive with large number of players. Gradual shifting of voice into a commodity with massive price erosion, future revenue growth is dependent on data services. The hefty price paid for the 3G and BWA spectrum coupled with the price war has necessitated the operators to look for sustainable business models. Further, the MNP regime has given rise to “focus on quality of service” by the operators.

Considering the huge investments made for 3G and BWA Spectrum by the operators, and the MNP mechanism in play, the finances of the operators will be under further pressure. With MNP as “prime catalyst factor” for offering “quality of service” by the operators; market may witness more consolidation in the form of Mergers and Acquisitions with focus on stability.

With the onset of 3G and Broadband wireless era, the shift in increase of data based services is expected in the near future.

OUTLOOK

Despite heavy penetration of telecom services, vast population at rural and semi-urban area remain to be covered. This gives a promising outlook to the industry. But the success will depend more on pricing and the variety of services with right technology mix.
