• The Parakh Group,
with its headquarters in Pune, is one of the leading Indian manufacturers of
FMCG commodities such as wheat flour and wheat products along with besan and
pulses
The Parakh Group, with its headquarters in Pune, is one of the leading Indian manufacturers of FMCG commodities such as wheat flour and wheat products along with besan and pulses. With over 30 years of rich experience in FMCG commodities and supply chain management, the business is run by a team of professionals under the guidance of Prakash Parakh and his younger brother Suresh Parakh. High tech plants located in central and western India, along with a strong retail and distribution network makes the group one of the leading manufacturers of FMCG commodities in India.
Prakash Parakh is ambitious about the food processing industry. He speaks about his earlier venture in edible oil for which flexible packaging was essential. He built up the refining, packaging and distribution network, along with brand building for the edible oil that became popular as Gemini oil. While the Parakhs began their edible oil project in 1994, their fast growth led to a joint venture with Cargill and he says quite frankly, “the Gemini brand and retail segment opportunities drove me to the packaging industry.”
Cargill-Parakh had established a flexible packaging plant with a W&H Varex blown film line and a W&H CI flexo press. Within a year of launching, as the Parakh brothers separated from Cargill in 2005, both the Gemini edible oil brand and the packaging plant became a part of Cargill India. After separating from the joint venture when Parakh decided to move on, he rebuilt a state of the art packaging plant just a stone’s throw from Parakh’s extremely modern and Asia’s largest toor dal processing plant at Bhandgaon, on the outskirts of Pune.
As a separate facility, Parakh has set up a fast growing
flexible packaging plant that particularly aims at food and consumer product
applications. This packaging plant has a capacity of producing 5 and 3 layer
blown films and has modern W and H wide web CI flexo presses, for almost any
consumer product application.
In India, when people think of the food processing industry, often the
implication is that they are thinking of ready to eat meals, frozen chapattis,
making peanut butter, turning milk into cheese and ice cream — mostly things
that bring to mind refrigerators and supermarkets. This concept requires a cold
chain — refrigerated trucks delivering products to supermarkets which display
the stuff in large coolers and freezers with glass doors and covers, and
finally customers who keep these things in their home refrigerator. But in reality
the Indian food processing industry is much more than cold storages,
supermarkets and refrigerators.
Nevertheless, Parakh admits that change is inevitable. He
says, “with increased prosperity and education there will be cultural change
resulting in changes in working, cooking and eating habits. To some extent
there is a step ahead towards eating out and trying non-traditional foods, but
this change will be gradual.” He explains to us that there is a huge industry
that is based on traditional products and ordinary every day products, like
wheat flour and dals, which require hygienic processing, sorting, packaging and
distribution. This is an enormous industry that is not waiting for FDI in
organised retail. It can be done with indigenous modern food processing plants,
sophisticated packaging, streamlining and developing distribution channels
while simultaneously building the local brands.
Prakash Parakh tells us, “There is no doubt about the existence of a real food
processing industry in the country and in the packaged food market there is
scope for everyone, as it is not a fully mature market. From this comes the
packaging story.”
• Parakh Agro’s toor
dal processing plant
It takes almost a week to process toor dal (lentil) — polishing, infusing it with solar radiation, splitting and sorting it by size and color into various grades before it is packed. For a first time visitor the level of process automation and controls is a revelation. This is apparently one of the most difficult dals to polish and process — it is a painstaking process and although it has been totally automated it requires continuous monitoring and testing.
Parakh Agro’s plant is state of the art — something like five floors of vertical and horizontal chutes and pipes – a kind of dry refinery using equipment from Basel based Buhler. Also amazing is the Buhler Sortex device which uses inline cameras to sort each grain of dal as it falls in a thread-like stream. Each grain of dal is optically sorted for blemishes in polishing and other attributes — substandard grains are ejected. The whole device is conceptually designed like a continuous ink jet device where ink droplets that are not required on the substrate are diverted.

In-House Kodak Flexcel NX System Goes to Parakh Agro
Kodak has installed India’s first in-house Flexcel NX system at Parakh Agro Industries’ plastics packaging division, headquartered in Pune, which produces food-grade flexible packaging materials.
Parakh Agro Industries’ plastics packaging division has invested in the Kodak Flexcel NX system, including the Trendsetter NX mid imager, Flexcel NX laminator, Prinergy Powerpack workflow with Digicap NX screening capability along with complete plate exposing and inline plate processing equipment.
Prakash Parakh, managing director of Parakh Agro Industries, said: ‘Kodak’s packaging technology is extremely versatile and user friendly. It is easily upgradeable, and we wanted our print quality to be of the highest standard. From our past experience, we have seen the Kodak Prinergy workflow running successfully in several offset pre-press bureaus in India, so it is a tried and tested solution.’
Vinay Nalawade, director of Parakh Agro, Plastics and Flexibles, said: ‘Higher ink transfer is one of the main concerns in wide web flexography. We at Parakh evaluated the Kodak Digicap NX screening for its capability and were surprised to see the improved results. The high densities for solvent-based inks will enable us to give the required results and further help improve speed and productivity, which will be a vital factor for our immediate expansion plans with high quality print machines. We always believed in the best of class inputs when it comes to machines, polymers, inks, plates, pre-press, etc. Simplicity of use and high level of automation also acted as other deciding factors for us.’
“Kodak is happy to partner with Parakh Agro, one of the packaging industry’s emerging flexible packaging companies, having major expansion plans, especially in the flexible packaging sector, with specialty films for specialty products. We have equipped them with the Flexcel NX system, a key enabler for a converter to match the quality of gravure, to achieve the targeted quality standards,” said Suhas Kulkarni, national business manager, packaging segment, Graphic Communications Group, Kodak India Private Limited
