US Patent Issued to Atlas Copco Secoroc on Jan. 24 for "Chuck
Assembly for a Down-Hole Drill" (Virginia Inventor)
U.S. Fed News
30 January 2012
|
[What follows is
the full text of the news story.] ALEXANDRIA, Va.,
Jan. 30 -- United States Patent no. 8,100,200, issued on Jan. 24, was
assigned to Atlas Copco Secoroc LLC (Grand Prairie, Texas). "Chuck Assembly
for a Down-Hole Drill" was invented by Dale Richard Wolfer (Salem, Va.). According to the
abstract released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "A chuck
assembly, an assembly for an earth-boring drill assembly, and a method of
retaining a drill bit for an earth-boring drill assembly, the drill assembly
including a casing. The assembly includes a drill bit having a generally
cylindrical head, a chuck connectable to the casing and operable to support
the bit, the chuck having an outer surface with a radially-outwardly
extending chuck ridge, an axially-extending first slot being defined in the
ridge, a sleeve having an inner surface with a radially-inwardly extending
sleeve ridge engageable with the chuck ridge to limit axial movement of the
sleeve relative to the chuck, the sleeve having a first lug supported on the
inner surface, the first lug being positionable in the first slot to limit
relative rotational movement between the sleeve and the chuck. The assembly
may also include a retainer assembly provided between the sleeve and the
bit." The patent was
filed on Nov. 19, 2009, under Application No. 12/622,189. For further

Atlas Copco to Develop High-Speed Geothermal Drilling Technology
Business Wire
12 October 2011
|
[What follows is
the full text of the news story.] Atlas Copco
Secoroc LLC and Sandia National Laboratories have been awarded MUSD 3.4
(around MSEK 20) by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for a joint research
project. The aim is to develop technology that would significantly increase
the speed of drilling deep geothermal wells and reduce the cost of investment
in this renewable energy source. STOCKHOLM--(BUSINESS
WIRE)-- Geothermal energy has great potential as an environmentally friendly
source of energy in many parts of the world, but developments are constrained
by the high costs related to drilling deep wells in hard rock and high
temperatures. Percussive tools, or down-the-hole hammers, are a promising
technology for geothermal exploration and development as they rely on
mechanisms well suited for the type of rock normally found in geothermal
formations. Compared to conventional geothermal drilling methods,
down-the-hole hammers could quadruple the penetration rates. We look
forward with great anticipation to the results of this project, said Bob
Fassl, Business Area President, Atlas Copco Mining and Rock Excavation Technique.
Atlas Copco already offers a wide range of products and services for
geothermal development projects and this is clearly a future growth market
for the Group. During the
three-year project Atlas Copco Secoroc will design, develop, and test
equipment. Sandia National Laboratories will provide computer models to
evaluate hammer performance, materials and components. Sandia will also
develop a high temperature test cell to evaluate hammer prototypes. The grant is one
of 32 research and design projects for geothermal power production funded
through an initiative by the DOE's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable
Energy. These projects are designed to meet the challenge to generate 80% of
U.S. electricity from clean energy sources by 2035. Atlas Copco was awarded
the second largest contract in the DOE initiative, which totaled MUSD 38. Atlas Copco is an
industrial group with world-leading positions in compressors, expanders and
air treatment systems, construction and mining equipment, power tools and
assembly systems. With innovative products and services, Atlas Copco delivers
solutions for sustainable productivity. The company was founded in 1873, is
based in Stockholm, Sweden, and has a global reach spanning more than 170
countries. In 2010, Atlas Copco had 33 000 employees and revenues of BSEK 70
(BEUR 7.3). Learn more at www.atlascopco.com. Atlas Copcos
Mining and Rock Excavation Technique business area provides
equipment for drilling and rock excavation, a complete range of related
consumables and service through a global network. The business area innovates
for sustainable productivity in surface and underground mining,
infrastructure, civil works, well drilling and geotechnical applications.
Principal product development and manufacturing units are located in Sweden,
the United States, Canada, China and India. This information

[What follows is
the full text of the article.] New Delhi, March
2 -- USA based Atlas Copco Secoroc LLC filed patent application for down hole
hammer having elevated exhaust. The inventors are Lyon Leland H and Lay
Warren T. Atlas Copco
Secoroc LLC filed the patent application on July 21, 2011. The patent
application number is 3107/KOLNP/2011 A. The international classification
number is E21B4/14. According to the
Controller General of Patents, Designs & Trade Marks, "A percussive
assisted rotary drill includes a top sub for connection with a drill pipe.
The drill pipe imparts torque to the drill and also supplies motive fluid to
the drill. The drill includes a shank adapter to facilitate affixing a rotary
drill bit to the drill. The motive fluid is divided between a bit flow which
flows through the bit to clear debris at the bottom of the drill, and an
actuator flow. An actuator, which may be in the form of a reciprocating
piston, moves within the drill under the influence of the actuator flow to
impart cyclical blows to the shank adapter. The blows are transferred to the
drill bit through the shank adapter to provide a relatively high frequency low
amplitude percussive force on the rotating drill bit to assist in the
drilling operation, At least a portion of the actuator flow portion of the
motive fluid is exhausted through the top end of the drill. The relative flow
rates and volumes of the bit and actuator flows can be adjusted with a check
valve in the actuator flow exhaust path." Copyright
