PROFILE:

 

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) was established in 1956 as an institution of national importance by an Act of Parliament with the objects to develop patterns of teaching in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education in all its branches so as to demonstrate a high standard of medical education to all medical colleges and other allied institutions in India; to bring together in one place educational facilities of the highest order for the training of personnel in all important branches of health activity and to attain self-sufficiency in postgraduate medical education.

 

The Institute has comprehensive facilities for teaching, research and patient-care. AIIMS conducts teaching programmes in medical and para-medical courses both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and awards its own degrees. Teaching and research are conducted in 50 disciplines. In the field of medical research AIIMS is the leader, having more than 1500 research publications by its faculty and researchers in a year. AIIMS also runs a College of Nursing, training students for B. Sc. (Hons.) Nursing nd  B. Sc. Nursing (Post-Certificate) degrees.

 

Twenty-five clinical departments including six super-speciality centres manage practically all types of disease conditions with support from pre-clinical and para-clinical departments. AIIMS also runs a 60-bedded hospital and the Comprehensive Rural Health Centre at Ballabgarh in Haryana and provides health cover to about 7.7 lakh people through the Centre for Community Medicine.

 

EDUCATION

 

Undergraduate

 

Fortynine students graduated from the four-year BSc (Hons) Nursing course, while 18 students graduated from the two-year BSc Nursing (Post-certificate) course.

 

Postgraduate

 

MSc Nursing - 14 students graduated from MSc Nursing two year course.

 

Eighteen students have joined the program this year in the following specialties:

CLINICAL AND COMMUNITY SERVICES

 

The faculty and students participated in outdoor and indoor patient-care activities of all the departments of the institute. They organized and conducted 6 rounds of Pulse Polio programme at 2 centers of South Delhi, organized by Government of NCT of Delhi.

 

Ms Kiran Singh coordinated and supervised the programme.

 

• Hundred health education sessions in rural areas and 100 in urban slums and OPDs on various health issues such as B.P. Immunization, New born care, PNC Care etc.

 

• ‘Prevention of Substance abuse’, a community awareness camp was held in Kalyanpuri.

 

• One month Training programme on “Life skills” for Street children and school drop-outs in Trilok puri

 

• An educational programme for patients recovering from Substance Use disorder, taking treatment from Trilok puri treatment centre.

 

• Street plays (10) and exhibitions on various health related topics for urban slums.

 

• Prevention of obesity, HIV/AIDS substance abuse, prevention of female feticide.

 

• Newborn week was celebrated in November 2009. 100 women participated in Breastfeeding promotion programmes in urban and rural community at Ballabhgarh.
