INDIAN ECONOMIC OVERVIEW
The current downturn
provides an opportunity to push ahead with reforms to accelerate growth, says
the latest India Development Update report released by the World Bank. The
report says that the adverse effects of rupee depreciation are likely to be
offset by the gains in the exports performance due to improved external
competitiveness. Since May this year, the local currency has depreciated
substantially and fell to a record level of Rs 68.85 to a dollar on August, 28.
A stagflation like
situation appears to have arisen as inflation jumped to an eight month high of
6.46 % for the month of September. It is up from 6.10 % in August. Growth
continues to be muted with factory output plunging to 0.6 % in August.
Onion prices have risen nearly 300 % from last September. Vegetables cost
nearly 90 % more than they did last year. Wake up to the economic contribution
of slum dwellers. They contribute more than 7.5 % to the country’s gross
domestic product, according to a recent study conducted in 50 top cities.
136000 estimated
number of jobs created during the second quarter of the current financial year.
50000 estimated number of additional jobs in the field of corporate social
responsibility in the coming years.
The International
Finance Corporation expects to come out with its rupee linked bonds issue before
the end of 2013 as a part of its plan to raise $ 1 billion. The Apple iPhone 5c
(Rs 41900 for 16 GB variant) and 5s (Rs 53500 for 16GB variant) has been
launched in India from 1st November.
The Land Acquisition
Act to provide just and fair compensation to farmers will come into force from
January 1 next year, said Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh. The Act
replaces a 119 year old registration. The Securities and Exchange Board of
India has approved the trading of currency futures on the Bombay Stock
Exchange. The exchange plans to launch the currency futures platform with
advanced trading technology by the end of November.

HISTORY
Way back in the 1970s, Rippan Kapur, a young airline purser,
was driven by the extraordinary dream to see a day when no Indian child would be
deprived of rights as basic as survival, participation, protection and
development.
Like many of them, Rippan too was upset when he saw disparities between privileged and underprivileged children. He hated to see children begging and working as servants. Unlike most of them though, he did something about it.
He joined his school's social service club and read to the blind, visited children in hospitals, held reading and writing classes for street children, and started a free dispensary at a slum the club adopted. To raise funds for these activities, the club sold milk. It even won a shield for the best Interact club! These qualities of resourcefulness and determination would come in handy.
In 1979 Rippan and 6 friends started CRY with Rs. 50/- around his mother's dining table. They felt that something needed to be done to improve the situation of the underprivileged Indian child. Uncharacteristically, given their backgrounds and motivations, they chose not to found a grassroots-level implementing organisation working directly with and for underprivileged children. They opted instead to make CRY a link between the millions of Indians who could provide resources and thousands of dedicated people and organisations at the grassroots-level who are struggling to function for lack of them. This "link" or enabling position has determined CRY's strategic choices at every juncture - from the fundraising methods it employs, to the nature of its relationship with the NGOs it partners.
All through the early, difficult years, it was Rippan's passion and conviction that drove CRY. He was firmly convinced that each of them can, in their own small way, be agents of change, and when enough of them are moved to this, the impact is a lasting change for the better. All he asked of people was that they help CRY by doing what they were good at. As he put it, "What I can do, I must do."
Although Rippan passed away in 1994, his vision for underprivileged children ensures that CRY continues to grow.
THEIR ACTIVITIES,
ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE 2011-2012
OUTREACH
This year was a year of expansion and diversification of the partnership base for their development support division. They entered two new states – Haryana and Himachal Pradesh and expanded partnership base in almost all the current intervention states – Assam, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Orissa, Chattisgarh, Gujarat, Delhi and Tamilnadu. Through the year, partnership were initiated with 66 new organizations. They also got into managing multiple research projects on myriad child rights issues across different states.
They widened the partnership outreach throrough diversity in the profile of their project partners. Apart from implementing projects, 8 partnerships were with large scaled regional / national resource organisations and / or specialist agencies. As on 31st March 2012. They had a total of 243 partnerships, with organizations, individuals and networks.
Their expansion and diversification has helped them address a range of child right issues that they strive to work on.
· Issue of children with disabilitis being addressed thorough Sishu Sarothi (Assam), Vikalp (Bihar), Sadhana (Orissa) and Janarth (Maharashtra).
Issue
of flood affected areas (including riverbeds) and communities dwelling therein,
being addressed through Gramya Vikas Mach and SAATARA (Assam).
Issue
of Children in conflict with law and profiling of child labourers being done
through Shambhunath Singh Research Foundation (Uttar Pradesh) and Sahyog-India
(Jammu and Kashmir).
Monitoring
state performance through budget analysis and research on child protection
being done through HAQ centre for child rights (Delhi).
BASIC PRINCIPLES
The CRC is built on certain "foundation principles" that underpin all other children's rights. The CRC confers the following basic rights on all children across the world, without discrimination:
the
right to survival, to life, health, nutrition, name and nationality,
the
right to development of education, care, leisure, and recreation,
the
right to protection from exploitation, abuse and neglect,
the
right to participation in expression, information, thought and religion.
CRY works to ensure these rights to all categories of children, who could be street children, children bonded in labor, children of commercial sex workers, physically and mentally challenged children and children in juvenile institutions, or even children in privileged homes.
