South Korea - ECONOMIC OVERVIEW

South Korea over the past four decades has demonstrated incredible growth and global integration to become a high-tech industrialized economy. In the 1960s, GDP per capita was comparable with levels in the poorer countries of Africa and Asia. In 2004, South Korea joined the trillion dollar club of world economies, and currently is among the world's 20 largest economies. Initially, a system of close government and business ties, including directed credit and import restrictions, made this success possible. The government promoted the import of raw materials and technology at the expense of consumer goods, and encouraged savings and investment over consumption. The Asian financial crisis of 1997-98 exposed longstanding weaknesses in South Korea''s development model including high debt/equity ratios and massive short-term foreign borrowing. GDP plunged by 6.9% in 1998, and then recovered by 9% in 1999-2000. Korea adopted numerous economic reforms following the crisis, including greater openness to foreign investment and imports. Growth moderated to about 4% annually between 2003 and 2007. With the global economic downturn in late 2008, South Korean GDP growth slowed to 0.3% in 2009. In the third quarter of 2009, the economy began to recover, in large part due to export growth, low interest rates, and an expansionary fiscal policy, and growth was 3.6% in 2011. In 2011, the US-South Korea Free Trade Agreement was ratified by both governments and is projected to go into effect in early 2012. The South Korean economy''s long term challenges include a rapidly aging population, inflexible labor market, and heavy reliance on exports - which comprise half of GDP.

The Incheon factory has a total area of 280,000 pyeong with the production capacity for 4.04 million tons of steel and 4.30 million tons of rolling. The industrial water used at the Incheon factory is brought up from the Gajwa Water Treatment Center and uses 5 million tons annually, making it a company that acts upon environment-friendly management. The Incheon north harbor which is currently under construction is composed of 2 50 thousand ton steel pier terminals and is due to be completed by the end of 2006.

The Pohang factory has a total area of 200,000 pyeong with the production capacity for 3.01 million tons of steel and 2.6 million tons of rolling. The Pohang Factory's portfolio varies from H-shaped steel columns and bars, round-shaped steel, castings, steel structures, etc. Moreover, it is the only factory in Korea that can supply both regular rails and express train rails.

The Dangjin Factory spans over 1.2 million pyeong of land and is divided largely into districts A and B. A-District uses a 1.2 million ton steel bar factory and iron scrap as its raw materials annually to produce hot-rolled steel plates at A hot-roll Factory and B-district is composed of 2 million tons annually at B hot-Rolling Mill. Currently, the Dangjin Factory is composed of 1 50,000 ton terminal and 1 30,000 ton terminal at A-district and plans to add 1 50,000 ton and 1 30,000 ton terminals are in the process of promotion. Once the A and B hot rolling factories are in normal operation in 2007, it will become a factory with the capacity to produce 5 million tons annually.

Constructed in July 2000 through investments in China, the Chingtao Factory spans across 23,630 pyeong and is a factory with assembly capacity for 12,000 Excavator-use T/ASS'Y and 70,000 sets of Rollers.
