Hong Kong ECONOMIC OVERVIEW
Hong Kong has a
free market economy, highly dependent on international trade and finance - the
value of goods and services trade, including the sizable share of re-exports,
is about four times GDP. Hong Kong levies excise duties on only four
commodities, namely: hard alcohol, tobacco, hydrocarbon oil, and methyl
alcohol. There are no quotas or dumping laws. Hong Kong''s open economy left it
exposed to the global economic slowdown that began in 2008. Although increasing
integration with China, through trade, tourism, and financial links, helped it
to make an initial recovery more quickly than many observers anticipated, it
again faces a possible slowdown as exports to the Euro zone and US slump. The
Hong Kong government is promoting the Special Administrative Region (SAR) as
the site for Chinese renminbi (RMB) internationalization. Hong Kong residents
are allowed to establish RMB-denominated savings accounts; RMB-denominated
corporate and Chinese government bonds have been issued in Hong Kong; and RMB
trade settlement is allowed. The territory far exceeded the RMB conversion
quota set by Beijing for trade settlements in 2010 due to the growth of
earnings from exports to the mainland. RMB deposits grew to roughly 9.1% of
total system deposits in Hong Kong by the end of 2012, an increase of 59% from
the previous year. The government is pursuing efforts to introduce additional
use of RMB in Hong Kong financial markets and is seeking to expand the RMB
quota. The mainland has long been Hong Kong''s largest trading partner,
accounting for about half of Hong Kong''s exports by value. Hong Kong''s
natural resources are limited, and food and raw materials must be imported. As
a result of China''s easing of travel restrictions, the number of mainland
tourists to the territory has surged from 4.5 million in 2001 to 34.9 million
in 2012, outnumbering visitors from all other countries combined. Hong Kong has
also established itself as the premier stock market for Chinese firms seeking
to list abroad. In 2012 mainland Chinese companies constituted about 46.6% of
the firms listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange and accounted for about 57.4%
of the Exchange''s market capitalization. During the past decade, as Hong
Kong''s manufacturing industry moved to the mainland, its service industry has
grown rapidly. Growth slowed to 5% in 2011, and less than 2% in 2012. Credit
expansion and tight housing supply conditions caused Hong Kong property prices
to rise rapidly and inflation to rise 4.1% in 2012. Lower and middle income
segments of the population are increasingly unable to afford adequate housing.
Hong Kong continues to link its currency closely to the US dollar, maintaining
an arrangement established in 1983.

The name Bayer MaterialScience stands for the materials that the company
develops and produces. It also stands

Bayer MaterialScience’s famous products are coating
raw materials bearing the brandnames of “Bayhydrol®” and “Bayhydur®”. High-grade “Makrolon®”, “Makrofol®”
and “Apec®” polycarbonates,
together with the “Bayblend®” and “Makroblend®” polycarbonate
blends, rank among Bayer MaterialScience’s best-sellers. These products are indispensable when it
comes to the production of automotive components, data carriers such as CDs and
DVDs, and a large number of other everyday items. The key product brands of Polyurethanes are “Desmodur®”
and “Desmophen®”. Resins under
the brand names “Desmopan®” and “Texin®” are used in technical
films and textile coatings, belts, hoses, cables and profiles, in the
automotive sector (interior, exterior, and chassis), in a multitude of
applications in sports and leisure (e.g. ski and sport shoes and sport
equipment), etc.
For the year ended 31st December, 2012, Bayer’s
sales rose by 9.0% to a record €39.8 billion from €36.5 billion in FY
2011. Net income of the Group was €2.4
billion (2011: €2.5 billion), decreased by 1.0%.
With 2012 sales of €11.5 billion (2011: €10.8 billion),
grew by 6.5%, Bayer MaterialScience is among the world’s largest polymer
companies. Business activities are
focused on the manufacture of high-tech polymer materials and the development
of innovative solutions for products used in many areas of daily life.
The products of Material Science are mainly used in
the automotive, construction, electrical / electronics and furniture
industries.
Despite worsening growth perspectives in Europe,
these principal global customer industries for MaterialScience developed
satisfactorily overall in 2012. The
progressive recovery in North America and the stabilization of the Asian
markets had an especially positive impact on our business development..
MaterialScience, the high-tech materials business
of the Group, also posted continued growth in sales, mainly due to higher
volumes. In contrast to 2011, the Group
was also able to raise EBITDA before special items despite high raw material
and energy costs.
Of crucial importance at MaterialScience is that
the Group continuously increases its profitability. The key to this lies in its superior
production and process technologies and, of course, in raising capacity
utilization at its facilities. That, in
turn, depends on the development of capacities across the industry and on
cyclical demand from the main customer sectors.
Sales of the MaterialScience subgroup rose in 2012
by 3.0% to €11,503 million (reported: +6.2%).
This growth was mainly the result of an overall increase in volumes,
which were flat with the previous year in Europe but posted good gains in the
other regions. In addition, the Group
was able to slightly raise prices in all regions except Asia / Pacific.
The Polyurethanes business unit raised sales by
7.9% to €5,995 million. Contributing to
this increase were higher volumes and prices in all product groups and
regions. The Group achieved significant
volume and price increases, particularly for diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI)
and toluene diisocyanate (TDI).
The Polycarbonates business unit posted sales of
€2,823 million, down 7.1% year on year.
The decline was attributable to a drop in selling prices worldwide that
was mainly due to new production capacities.
However, volumes as a whole were level year on year.
In August 2012, the Group implemented
organizational changes within the MaterialScience segment. The Vulkollan business with high-performance
elastomers is no longer part of the Polyurethanes business unit but is reported
under the Coatings, Adhesives, Specialties (CAS) business unit. The prior-year figures are restated
accordingly.
On 31st December, 2012, the Bayer Group had 110,500
employees worldwide (2011: 111,800).
Thus headcount showed a slight decline of 1.2% from the prior year. In Germany the Group had 34,600 employees
(2011: 35,800), making up 31.3% of the Group workforce. MaterialScience 14,500 (2011: 14,800). The remaining 19,900 (2011: 20,300) employees
worked mainly for the service companies.
This figure also includes the 700 (2011: 700) employees of Bayer
AG. There were an additional 2,500
(2011: 2,500) trainees on the closing date who were not included in the above
numbers.
