denmark ECONOMIC OVERVIEW

This thoroughly modern market economy features a high-tech agricultural sector, state-of-the-art industry with world-leading firms in pharmaceuticals, maritime shipping and renewable energy, and a high dependence on foreign trade. Denmark is a member of the European Union (EU); Danish legislation and regulations conform to EU standards on almost all issues. Danes enjoy a high standard of living and the Danish economy is characterized by extensive government welfare measures and an equitable distribution of income. Denmark is a net exporter of food and energy and enjoys a comfortable balance of payments surplus but depends on imports of raw materials for the manufacturing sector. Within the EU, Denmark is among the strongest supporters of trade liberalization. After a long consumption-driven upswing, Denmark's economy began slowing in 2007 with the end of a housing boom. Housing prices dropped markedly in 2008-09 and, following a short respite in 2010, has since continued to decline. The global financial crisis has exacerbated this cyclical slowdown through increased borrowing costs and lower export demand, consumer confidence, and investment. The global financial crisis cut Danish real GDP in 2008-09. Denmark made a modest recovery in 2010 with real GDP growth of 1.3%, in part because of increased government spending; however, the country experienced a technical recession in late 2010-early 2011. Historically low levels of unemployment rose sharply with the recession and have remained at about 6% in 2010-12, based on the national measure, about two-thirds average EU unemployment. An impending decline in the ratio of workers to retirees will be a major long-term issue. Denmark maintained a healthy budget surplus for many years up to 2008, but the budget balance swung into deficit in 2009. In spite of the deficits, the new coalition government delivered a modest stimulus to the economy in 2012. Nonetheless, Denmark's fiscal position remains among the strongest in the EU with public debt at about 45% of GDP in 2012. Despite previously meeting the criteria to join the European Economic and Monetary Union (EMU), so far Denmark has decided not to join, although the Danish krone remains pegged to the euro. Denmark held the EU presidency during the first half of 2012; priorities included promoting a responsible, dynamic, green, and safe Europe, while working to steer Europe out of its euro zone economic crisis.

Diversified Product Portfolio

It holds leading position in several key product categories within food ingredients, and its subsidiary, Genencor, is a growth engine of industrial biotechnology. The company's product range includes colors, emulsifiers, textural ingredients, cultures, enzymes and antioxidants, sweeteners, animal nutrition, sugar, flavors and fragrances. Danisco serves various industries including food, non-food sectors and beverage industries. Such diversified product portfolio helps the company reduce the impact of market volatility in one particular product segment and provides economic stability.

Weaknesses

Complex Supply Chain

The company carries out its operations through a very complex supply chain, which leads to several sustainability risks. These risks include management of single-source suppliers, potential human rights issues in farming in the developing world, loss of biodiversity due to cultivation, food safety and quality, and climate change impacts. In addition, the company also has the risk of single source suppliers, wherein if the supplier fails to supply the raw materials; it would affect the production capacity of the company and have an impact on the net output, hampering its financial output in the long run.

Opportunities

Strategic Initiatives

The company strengthens its existing businesses with diverse strategic initiatives. In December 2011, the company announced its plans to expand their production unit at LCI cultures in China to meed the growing demand in the region for fresh dairy and dietary supplement products. Through this investment, the company plans to expand its growth in China. In April 2011, the company announced its plan to invest its cellulose gum production facility in China to meet growing demand from the global food and oral care industry. This expansion will increase annual production of the highly functional, high-purity hydrocolloid by 5,000 tons. In March 2011, the company and Kappa Bioscience entered into agreement to work in collaboration on the emerging vitamin K2 MK-7 for food industry. During the same month, the company plans to expand production of its functional fibre, Litesse polydextrose to meet the growing global demand for polydextrose. The expansion will enable the company to maintain its leading position in the world polydextrose market.

New Product Launches

In constant pursuit of innovation, the company has been introducing new products to meet the changing requirements of the market. New product development will provide the company significant market opportunity, which will help it increase its revenue and profitability. In March 2012, the company introduced a new proprietary vitamin K2 product as a novel foodbring to the European food industry. During the same month, the company introduced hydrocolloids and customised solutions which replace guar in food formulations. In February 2012, the company introduced Guardian Chelox L, as part of the Care4U range of natural protective solutions, which is an effective non-allergenic natural solution available for preserving the freshness of food emulsions. In January 2012, the company introduced Cremodan FruitPro 10 Stabiliser System, which provides opportunity for ice cream manufacturers to process innovative new products on a standard water ice line. In July 2011, the company launched OsmoAid its own brand Lacitol for digestive health. In April 2011, the company introduced a new full service portfolio which gives textile processors and garment laundries access to latest enzyme innovation. Successful product launches enable the company to grow organically, generate adequate revenue streams and also provide enough opportunities to improve its market share.

Global Enzyme Market

Global enzyme demand will rise 6.3 percent annually through 2013 and reach over USD 7 billion by 2013, driven by strong demand in the specialty enzymes segment and good growth in animal feed and ethanol markets. The market is broken down into applications of technical, food and animal feed enzymes. Of these, technical enzymes have over 50% of the market and are expected to be worth $1.4 billion by 2012, a CAGR of 3.5%. The animal feed enzyme segment is currently worth $280 million and will be worth $375 million in 2012, a CAGR of 6%. According to a report, Animal feed enzymes will achieve their fastest growth in developing markets where rising per capita incomes will continue to increase demand for meat in the local diets. The increase in the demand thus reflects on the huge opportunities for the company as it has a global presence in 25 countries and operates 49 plants and the approval of its new enzyme, Econase XT by the European regulatory.

Threats

Rising Demand for Substitute Products

Arrival of substitutes to the company’s products and their rising demand are some of the serious challenges to Danisco. The Food and Drug Administration approved artificial sweeteners such as ACE-K, saccharin, aspartame, Neotame and sucralose. Nutrasweet introduced Neotame, which is a high-intensity sweetener. The demand for Neotame is increasing since its launch and the company is planning to increase its production to meet the demand. PepsiCo and The Coca-Cola Company also started using Neotame. The growing sales and demand for Neotame may affect the market share of Danisco's products. Thus, introduction of such substitutes could hamper the growth prospects of the company.

Growing Competition

Growing competition may lead the company to reduce its prices, which could negatively affect its margins. The company operates in a highly competitive chemical industry. Danisco operates in a progressively more complex and challenging chemical marketplace whose dynamics are ever-changing. Technological advances by any player in the market could render its present or future products obsolete or uneconomical. The existing market includes companies of varying sizes; some more specialized than the company with respect to particular commodities, and some with greater financial resources than the company. Its key competitors include MGP Ingredients, Inc., Associated British Foods plc, Astarta Holding N.V. and Tereos SA. The company competes in this evolving marketplace on the basis of many factors, including price, quality, innovation, service, reputation, distribution and promotion.

Stringent Government Regulations

The agricultural operations of the company are subjected to environmental laws and regulations in countries in which the company operates. The food operations of the company are subjected to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and state, local and foreign counterparts and to inspection by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and other federal, state, local and foreign environmental, health and safety authorities. Regulatory restrictions may impact the cost of food ingredients and the production of technical enzymes. The company has to maintain rigorous quality control procedures to improve extensive traceability and product recall capabilities. The inability of the company to meet the set standards would adversely affect its operations. Regulatory changes may increase the cost of production and decrease margins.
