HONG KONG - ECONOMIC OVERVIEW
Hong Kong has a free market economy, highly dependent on international trade and finance - the value of goods and services trade, including the sizable share of re-exports, is about four times GDP. Hong Kong's open economy left it exposed to the global economic slowdown that began in 2008. Although increasing integration with China, through trade, tourism, and financial links, helped it to make an initial recovery more quickly than many observers anticipated, it again faces a possible slowdown as exports to the Euro zone and US slump. The Hong Kong government is promoting the Special Administrative Region (SAR) as the site for Chinese renminbi (RMB) internationalization. Hong Kong residents are allowed to establish RMB-denominated savings accounts; RMB-denominated corporate and Chinese government bonds have been issued in Hong Kong; and RMB trade settlement is allowed. The territory far exceeded the RMB conversion quota set by Beijing for trade settlements in 2010 due to the growth of earnings from exports to the mainland. RMB deposits grew to roughly 7.8% of total system deposits in Hong Kong by the end of 2011, an increase of over 59% since the beginning of the year. The government is pursuing efforts to introduce additional use of RMB in Hong Kong financial markets and is seeking to expand the RMB quota. The mainland has long been Hong Kong's largest trading partner, accounting for about half of Hong Kong's exports by value. Hong Kong's natural resources are limited, and food and raw materials must be imported. As a result of China's easing of travel restrictions, the number of mainland tourists to the territory has surged from 4.5 million in 2001 to 28 million in 2011, outnumbering visitors from all other countries combined. Hong Kong has also established itself as the premier stock market for Chinese firms seeking to list abroad. In 2011 mainland Chinese companies constituted about 43% of the firms listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange and accounted for about 56% of the Exchange's market capitalization. During the past decade, as Hong Kong's manufacturing industry moved to the mainland, its service industry has grown rapidly. Growth slowed to 5% in 2011. Credit expansion and tight housing supply conditions caused Hong Kong property prices to rise rapidly in 2010 and inflation to rise 5.3% in 2011. Lower and middle income segments of the population are increasingly unable to afford adequate housing. Hong Kong continues to link its currency closely to the US dollar, maintaining an arrangement established in 1983

Bayer
MaterialScience is an independent, globally operating company within the Bayer
Group. The name Bayer MaterialScience
stands for the materials that the company develops and produces. It also stands for the know-how and expertise
of its employees all over the world.
Bayer
MaterialScience’s famous products are coating raw materials bearing the
brandnames of “Bayhydrol®” and “Bayhydur®”. High-grade “Makrolon®”, “Makrofol®”
and “Apec®” polycarbonates,
together with the “Bayblend®” and “Makroblend®” polycarbonate
blends, rank among Bayer MaterialScience’s best-sellers. These products are indispensable when it
comes to the production of automotive components, data carriers such as CDs and
DVDs, and a large number of other everyday items. The key product brands of Polyurethanes are “Desmodur®”
and “Desmophen®”. Resins under
the brand names “Desmopan®” and “Texin®” are used in technical
films and textile coatings, belts, hoses, cables and profiles, in the
automotive sector (interior, exterior, and chassis), in a multitude of
applications in sports and leisure (e.g. ski and sport shoes and sport
equipment), etc.
For
the year ended 31st December, 2011, Bayer’s sales rose by 4.0% to a record
€36.5 billion from €35.1 billion in FY 2010.
Net income of the Group was €2.5 billion (2010: €1.3 billion).
With
2011 sales of €10.8 billion, Bayer MaterialScience is among the world’s largest
polymer companies. Business activities
are focused on the manufacture of high-tech polymer materials and the
development of innovative solutions for products used in many areas of daily
life. The main segments served are the
automotive, electrical and electronics, construction and the sports and leisure
industries.
The
main customer industries for MaterialScience also did not entirely escape the
steady weakening of the global economy during the FY 2011. Negative factors included the euro crisis,
the sluggish recovery of domestic demand and the real-estate market in North
America, and the strict measures adopted to tackle inflation and economic
overheating in Asia.
At
the end of 2011, Bayer MaterialScience had 30 production sites and employed
approximately 14,800 people around the globe.
For
the first half year [H1] ended 30th June, 2012, sales of the Group climbed by
5.1% to €20,233 million (reported: +8.4%; H1 2011: €18,667 million).
MaterialScience
raised sales by a currency- and portfolio-adjusted 2.2% (reported: +5.2%).
The
Group anticipates slower growth overall in 2012 in the global markets of
importance to materialScience. The
ongoing Euro crisis in particular is holding back consumption. By contrast, demand will probably continue to
be supported by the economic growth momentum in Asia.
Following
the good business performance in the first half of 2012, especially at
CropScience and Health-Care, the Group is also confident for the second half of
the year. In addition, the Group is
benefiting from a very favorable currency environment. Against this background, the Group is raising
its sales and earnings forecast for the full year. These predictions are based on the exchange
rates on 30th June, 2012.
For
the full year 2012, the Group is now anticipating a currency- and portfolio
adjusted sales increase of between 4% and 5% (previously: 3%). This would result in Group sales of between
approximately €39 billion and €40 billion (previously: €37 billion).
For
MaterialScience, in the third quarter of 2012 the Group aspires to achieve
currency- and portfolio-adjusted sales and EBITDA before special items on the
level of the good second quarter. The
Group continues to plan for currency- and portfolio-adjusted sales and EBITDA
before special items in 2012 to remain level with the prior year.
As
at 30th June, 2012, the Bayer Group employed 112,300 people worldwide (31st
