GERMANY - ECONOMIC OVERVIEW
The German economy - the fifth largest economy in the world
in PPP terms and Europe's largest - is a leading exporter of machinery,
vehicles, chemicals, and household equipment and benefits from a highly skilled
labor force. Like its Western European neighbors, Germany faces significant
demographic challenges to sustained long-term growth. Low fertility rates and
declining net immigration are increasing pressure on the country's social
welfare system and necessitate structural reforms. Reforms launched by the
government of Chancellor Gerhard SCHROEDER (1998-2005), deemed necessary to
address chronically high unemployment and low average growth, contributed to
strong growth in 2006 and 2007 and falling unemployment. These advances, as
well as a government subsidized, reduced working hour scheme, help explain the
relatively modest increase in unemployment during the 2008-09 recession - the
deepest since World War II - and its decrease to 6.5% in 2012. GDP contracted
5.1% in 2009 but grew by 4.2% in 2010, and 3.0% in 2011, before dipping to 0.7%
in 2012 - a reflection of low investment spending due to crisis-induced
uncertainty and the decreased demand for German exports from recession-stricken
periphery countries. Stimulus and stabilization efforts initiated in 2008 and
2009 and tax cuts introduced in Chancellor Angela MERKEL's second term
increased Germany's total budget deficit - including federal, state, and
municipal - to 4.1% in 2010, but slower spending and higher tax revenues
reduced the deficit to 0.8% in 2011. In 2012 Germany reached a budget surplus of
0.1%. A constitutional amendment approved in 2009 limits the federal government
to structural deficits of no more than 0.35% of GDP per annum as of 2016 though
the target was already reached in 2012. By 2014, the federal government wants
to balance its budget. Following the March 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster,
Chancellor Angela Merkel announced in May 2011 that eight of the country's 17
nuclear reactors would be shut down immediately and the remaining plants would
close by 2022. Germany hopes to replace nuclear power with renewable energy.
Before the shutdown of the eight reactors, Germany relied on nuclear power for
23% of its electricity generating capacity and 46% of its base-load electricity
production

Resource Management |
|
|
Globalization, ever scarcer resources, and the internet will radically
change the way markets operate. We see this primarily as an opportunity albeit against a faster paced, more complex, and less
predictable backdrop. Particularly when it comes to projects that are
important for the company’s future, we must focus on limiting risks and
adjusting our strategy as necessary in other
words, what we are currently doing in electromobility and photovoltaics. At
the same time, we must continue to fine-tune our company’s organization as
well as our leadership and work culture to keep in step with the rapid pace
of change. Our aim is to achieve a dynamic organization with leaner
structures and more efficient processes. |
|
|
With rising competition in the industry, it becomes very important for
a player to have a diversified geographical and product portfolio. Setting up
new units or businesses generally is very expensive for the company and it
takes some time to realize the gains from it. Instead, companies prefer the
inorganic growth strategy of acquiring outstanding brands and expanding their
business operations globally. To this end, in June 2013, through its
subsidiary, Bosch Packaging Technology, the company signed an agreement to
acquire the assets of Tecsor Machines et Systemes S.A.S. (Tecsor), based in
Meyreuil near Marseille, France. This acquisition will help the company in
adding to its activities in liquid foods. |

March 2013, the company announced plans to acquire Bauer Optimierungstechnik
GmbH & Co. KG, a software company that offers ventilation and air-conditioning
control solutions mainly to the German market. In 2013, the company signed an
agreement to acquire Astrim Energia S.r.l. (Astrim), an Italy-based energy

technologies. Bosch has more than 250 partnerships with various universities,
research institutes, and the industry. Over the last 20 years, the company
invested over €50 billion in its research and development activities, including
€4.8 billion in 2012 alone. The company’s major research sectors include
energy storage and conversion, information technology and sensors, materials
and production technology, and development methods and processes. The company
employed approximately 42,800 individuals around the world in its R&D
activities. Securing patent rights is important for the development of the
company’s product portfolio. A strong patent portfolio creates market
exclusivity for the company's products, providing a competitive advantage over
its competitors. Bosch has a portfolio of over 90,000 active industrial
property rights. In 2012, the company applied for around 4,800 patents (650
more than that in the previous year). Its work can be evaluated by the new
patents the company registers every working day, which stands at around 19. The
patents owned by the company are related to various technologies. In March
2013, the European Patent Office in Brussels ranked Bosch first for patents in
Europe in 2012, with 838 patents granted to the company over the course of the
year.
Weaknesses
The dependence on European market limits Bosch’s growth prospects. For
the fiscal year ended December 2012, Europe accounted for 56.76% of the
company’s total revenue, followed by Asia Pacific with 22.27%, Americas with
19.17% and Other regions with 1.8%. Besides, Of the company’s 305,877 employees, 195,437 employees are
from Europe. Moreover, Aaccording to the United Nations ‘World Economic
Situation and Prospects 2013’ report, Europe is trapped in high unemployment,
financial sector fragility, heightened sovereign risks, fiscal austerity and
low growth. With existing policies and growth trends, it may take at least
another five years for Europe to make up for the job losses caused by the Great
Recession of 2008-2009. The economic woes in Europe are spilling over to
developing countries through weaker demand for their exports and heightened
volatility in capital flows and commodity prices. To this end, in 2012, the
company’s sales were also dropped by 1.9% to €29.8 billion (2.4% after
adjustment for exchange-rate effects).
Opportunities
Growth plans help a company expand its operations in the market. In June
2013, the company started the construction of a new boiler production facility
in Russia. The company will produce Bosch and Buderus branded industrial hot
water and domestic heating boilers in the plant, starting in the first quarter
of 2014. The plant is being built on the existing Bosch production site in
Engels. The plant will produce more than 30 models of Buderus wallhung and
Bosch gas boilers with a capacity of 18 kilowatts to 35 kilowatts for heating,
and the plant will produce hot water. In March 2013, the group invested around
€120m in new facilities in Nanjing, China. The facilities will manufacture
brake pads, spark plugs, and testing equipment for workshops, mainly for
customers in Asia Pacific. In 2012, the company spent around €3.2 billion as
capital expenditure. It invested around €2 billion in European centers
including €1.1 billion in Germany. It invested approximately €780m in Asia
Pacific and €380m in the Americas. The focal points in North America were the
expansion of production of gasoline direct injection systems for passenger cars
and injection systems for commercial vehicles.
Increasing Demand for Fuel Efficient Vehicles
Fuel efficient vehicles, which feature advanced technologies such as
hybrids, clean diesel engines, flexible-fuel ethanol vehicles and a
turbocharged direct injection system could offer increased opportunities to the
company. According to 'Annual Energy Outlook 2009' report by Energy Information
Administration (US Government), the sale of unconventional vehicles (hybrid)
would account for 63% of the total Light Duty Vehicles (LDV) sales. The total
sale of hybrid vehicles is estimated to increase from 2.3% of new LDV sales in
the year 2007 to 20.6%, and 39.6% by 2015 and 2030 respectively. It is also
forecast that the number of hybrid vehicles sold could reach 7.9 million in
2030. Thus, with unconventional and hybrid vehicles becoming the mainstay in
the future automobile market, the company could find huge opportunities to
garner higher market share and increase its revenue.
Strategic acquisitions offer a strong growth opportunity to the company,
especially while foraying into new markets or launching new products or
services. With rising competition in the industry, it becomes very important
for a player to have a diversified geographical and product portfolio. Setting
up new units or businesses generally is very expensive for the company and it
takes some time to realize the gains from it.
Tecsor undertakes the development and
sales of machinery for making and filling PET containers for liquid and
paste-like foodstuffs. In March 2013, the company announced plans to acquire
Bauer Optimierungstechnik GmbH & Co. KG, a software company that offers
ventilation and air-conditioning control solutions mainly to the German market.
In 2013, the company signed an agreement to acquire Astrim Energia S.r.l.
(Astrim), an Italy-based energy service provider offering power generation and
combined heat technology. Astrim is one of the ten largest energy service
providers in Italy.
Threats
Bosch operates in various markets, which undergo rapid and significant
changes due to the introduction of innovative technologies. The company must
continuously design new products, update existing products and services and
develop new technologies in order to meet the requirements of the market. It is
a technology-based company, which provides innovative products and solutions to
automotive and other industries globally. The company designs, develops,
produces and provides support to its innovative products that incorporate
advanced technologies. The company developed a number of breakthrough
technologies in its areas of operations. But, it has to update these
technologies with time that requires a significant commitment to research and
development, which involves considerable financial resources and the efforts
may not always result in success. Upon investing in these new technologies, the
company’s sales and profits could suffer if they are not accepted in the
marketplace as anticipated.
Growing Counterfeit Goods Market
The market for counterfeit goods has been on the rise across industries
and is affecting the sales and the image of branded products. Counterfeiting
continues to be a major issue in the automotive parts industry. According to US
Federal Trade Commission, counterfeiting costs the global automotive parts
industry $12 billion a year. The parts that tend to be counterfeited mostly
include brake pads, spark plugs, and various types of filters. Both the Motor
and Equipment Manufacturers Association (MEMA) and the Organization for
Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) claim the majority of counterfeit parts
are made in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Russia, India, Pakistan, and Uruguay.
Counterfeiting in automotive parts not only affects the jobs prospects,
financial health of legitimate companies and increases costs related to
warranty claims, investigations, but also jeopardizes public safety, tarnishes
brand names. Thus, the company is prone to these challenges and counterfeits
will affect the company’s fortunes.
The company could be impacted by the growing competition in the market.
With rising competition, the automotive industry has been undergoing
consolidation wherein the smaller entities are being acquired by or merged with
major players. To survive and succeed in a stiff competitive environment, it
becomes very important for the company to distinguish its product and service
offerings through a clear and unique value proposition. The company faces firm
competition from players such as Johnson Controls, Inc., Visteon Corporation,
Magna International Inc., Magneti Marelli Holding SpA, Delphi Corporation,
Federal-Mogul Corporation, Denso Corporation, Continental AG and other
international and regional players. Rising competition could force the company
to reduce its prices, which may adversely affect its margins.
