INDIAN ECONOMIC OVERVIEW
The services sector, the largest contributor to India’s GDP, contracted for
the sixth consecutive month in December, as orders dipped. However, hiring has
risen. Direct tax collections rose 12.3 % during the April – December
period of the current financial year. The government has decided to
retain 100 per cent foreign direct investment in both greenfield (new) and
brown field (existing) pharmaceutical companies, despite concerns over genetic
drugs going out of production, if multi-national companies take over domestic
ones. In M&A deals, a non compete clause would not be allowed, except in
special circumstances. The Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion plans
to release the next edition of its consolidated foreign direct investment
policy document on March 31, incorporating changes made in the past year. DIPP
compiles all policies related to India’s FDI regime into a single document to
make it easy for investors to understand. 185 million estimated number of
mobile internet users in India by June 2014, according to a report by the
Internet & Mobile Association of India and IMRB International. India
had 110 million mobile internet users with 25 million in rural areas. $3.77 tn
estimated global IT spending in 2014, according to research firm Gartner Inc.
The growth forecast for this year is cut to 3.1 %from the earlier estimate of
3.5 %. The spending growth forecast for telecom services – a segment that
accounts for more than 40 % at total IT spending – from 1.9 per cent to 1.2 per
cent is the main reason for this overall IT cut. A Reserve Bank of India
committee has recommended setting up a special category of lenders who would
cater to small businesses and households, to expand the number of customers
with access to banking services. These banks would focus onproviding payment
services and deposit products. Indian banks want the free use of
automated teller machines to be capped at five transactions in a month
including that of the bank in which the account is active. This follows state
government order to banks to install security guards at ATM booths after a
woman banker was assaulted in Bangalore. The government is likely to present a
vote on Account in mid-February. The annual Economic Survey will be tabled
later in Parliament along with the full Budget. A full Budget for 2014/15 is
likely to be present in July by the new government formed after the General
Election. The government will soon launch an internet spy system, called Netra,
to detect malafide messages. Security agency will deploy the system to capture
dubious voice traffic on applications such as Skype and Google Talk, as well as
tweeters.

BRIEF PROFILE OF TI-1E INSTITUTE
Pandit Jawaharlal
Nehru, the architect of Modern India, had conceived and implemented the concept
of Regional Engineering Colleges for technical advancement and promotion of
national integration in the country. He laid the foundation stone for REC
Warangal on 10th October 1959. REC Warangal holds the distinction of
being the first in the series of RECs established in the country. Now elevated
to the status of an NIT, it has the distinction of offering the highest number
of postgraduate courses among NITS. The lnstitute also has the distinction of
having produced more than 360 Ph.Ds, so far.
This reputed institute
has sailed through several phases in its historical journey assimilating newer
experiences, academic as well as administrative, and yet retaining its original
sheen and noble objectives. Established as an affiliate college of Osmania
University (1959), REC Warangal came under the purview of Jawaharlal Nehru
Technological University (1972) with full academic autonomy, a status enjoyed
by a few RECs in the country then. It grew into an affiliate college of
Kakatiya University (1976) and then on, steadily marched towards a University
Status. It was declared a Deemed University in the year 2002. It was
subsequently given the status of lnstitute of National Importance and renamed
as National lnstitute of Technology, Warangal.
During this span
of 50 years of existence, it has become a proud Alma Mater for over
13294 graduates in different branches of technology, 8039 postgraduates and 368
doctorates in technology and science. The alumni of the institute can be found
across the globe adorning very high positions in academics, industry, politics,
administration, research and entrepreneurship, thus creating an international
flavor for the institute. As part of its admission policies today, it draws
students from different parts of the world for its UG, PG and Ph. D programmes
under Direct Admission for Students Abroad (DASA) and other schemes of the
Government of India. It is, thus, becoming an International lnstitute of
excellence, offering quality technical education. In its quest for establishing
a brand image commensurate with its international complexion, it is striving
towards excellence in several areas.
The lnstitute is
presently offering eight undergraduate programmes in Civil, Electrical and
Electronics, Mechanical, Electronics and Communication, Metallurgical,
Chemical, Computer Science and Engineering and Biotechnology Engineering
streams; and twenty nine Postgraduate Programmes in diverse branches of
Engineering and Basic Sciences including MBA and MCA. The lnstitute also offers
Ph.D. programmes in Engineering, Science, and Humanities disciplines.
The lnstitute
strives to set higher standards for itself in imparting technical education,
research and consultancy works. In this direction, several curricular and
administrative reforms have taken place, notable among them being the
introduction of Credit based System of Evaluation.
The lnstitute has
currently ongoing research and other projects sponsored by MHRD and other
agencies such as CSIR, DST, DIT, DRDO, NRB, BRNS etc., to a tune of Rs.2
crores.
The institute has
good infrastructure and it is being further improved under Technical Education
Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP) funded by the World Bank. The placement
of students through campus interviews during the year 2011-12 has been excellent.
163 organizations visited the campus and 935 students, almost 75% of the
overall intake, have been placed.
The institute is
located in a sprawling area with a residential campus with accommodation for
all students and most of the members of the staff. Hostel facilities are being
further strengthened by creating new hostels as well as renovating the existing
ones. Sports facilities include huge playgrounds, an impressive modern stadium
with a turf wicket for cricket and a national level 400 metre track. The
lnstitute has 18 student clubs and 12 departmental associations, which organize
activities to promote total personality development among students.
The Alumni
Association of the lnstitute is very active with fifteen chapters in various
cities of the country and one chapter in USA. The institute maintains a close
rapport with the Alumni in all matters relating to the institute's progress.
