INDIAN ECONOMIC OVERVIEW

India’s current account deficit narrowed in the quarter ended September as government measures to curb imports, especially gold, kicked in.  The current account deficit, the excess of a country’s imports of goods and services over exports, narrowed to $ 5.2 billion from $ 21 billion in the year ago period, according to provisional Reserve Bank of India data. Finance Minister P. Chidambaram said the CAD for the year will be less than $ 60 billion or 3 per cent of GDP and the latest data suggests the government may achieve the target.

India was ranked 94th among the world’s most corrupt nations list. Denmark and New Zealand topped as the cleanest while Somalia emerged as the most corrupt.

India’s services sector activity witnessed a moderate improvement in November over the previous month, even while indicating the fifth successive monthly contraction, according the HSBC survey.

$53 million estimated losses suffered by India due to phishing attacks during the third quarter, according to a study by RSA. India ranks fourth in the list of nations hit by phishing attacks. The US remained at the top of the charts. Phishing is the process of acquiring information such as user names, passwords and credit card details by sending e-mails disguised as official mails.

Rs.4080 million worth of mobile-phone-based transactions by July 2013 compared to Rs.260 million in September, 2012, according to Deloitte report. The number of transactions has shot up from 94000 to 701000.

India aims to earn Rs.400000 million from the bandwidth auction set for January. The merger and acquisition guidelines, cleared by a group of ministers, will be out before the auction begins so that players can make informed decisions on the auctions.

HISTORY

Established in the year 1956, the college St. Joseph's College, popularly known as Devagiri College envisioned by the C.M.I Congregation, is a Christian minority institution and was formally inaugurated by the then Governor of Madras.

First affiliated to the University of Madras and then to the University of Kerala , this college is now under the University of Calicut .

Maintaining an ideal ambience and striking a delicate balance between curricular and co-curricular activities, this institution has produced more than 180 toppers in University examinations, won the University athletic champions seventeen times, produced artists who have won laurels at national levels, and nurtured sportsmen and professionals of international reputation.

St Joseph 's College, Devagiri, affiliated to the University of Calicut has been imparting quality education for the last 55 years as one of the most prestigious Arts and Science Colleges in Malabar. True to its Motto, PRO DEO ET PATRIA (For God and Country), the institution works with commitment to create a just and humane society, upholding national integration and religious harmony, with special emphasis on the enrichment of the poor and the marginalized. As a recognition of its achievements and endeavours in the academic, cultural, and socio-economic sectors, NAAC had accredited the College with A Grade in 2004, and the institution was re-accredited with CGPA 3.63 on four point scale in 2011. The College was recognized as a “College with Potential for Excellence” by UGC in 2011.

With ten Post-graduate Departments, five Research Centres, and separate wings offering M.G.University's off-campus programmes and courses recognized by DOEACC and ICAI, Devagiri College has maintained its reputation for diversification. This institution is now provided with an eight-lane track stadium, an auditorium and an open-air theatre, a computerized library of about 50000 books and journals, a total of forty-seven computers installed in different Departments and Laboratories, and independent Internet facility at appropriate locations. About half of the seventy-five permanent teachers here are either PhDs or rank holders. More than a score of forums and clubs that actively function here supplement the effort of the teachers. For all these reasons Devagiri College is now much better poised to develop the intellectual, athletic and artistic potential of the students.

AUTONOMY: 13 COLLEGES IN THE FINAL LIST

24th December 2013

The government has selected 13 colleges to be granted academic autonomy. The final list, which includes two government colleges and 11 aided ones, will be forwarded to the University Grants Commission (UGC) for approval.

A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting chaired by Education Minister P K Abdu Rabb here on Monday.  According to sources in the Department of Higher Education, the two government colleges which will be granted academic autonomy are University College, Thiruvananthapuram, and Maharajas College, Ernakulam.  Among aided colleges that will be recommended to UGC for autonomy are: Mar Ivanios College, Thiruvananthapuram; Fatima Mata National College, Kollam; St Teresa’s College, Ernakulam; Sacred Heart College, Thevara and Rajagiri College, Ernakulam; SB College, Changanassery;  Christ College, Irinjalakkuda; St Thomas College, Thrissur; MES Mampad College, Malappuram; St Joseph’s College, Devagiri, Farook College, Kozhikode, sources said.

“The Autonomy Approval Committee will also consider the applications of a few colleges, which have received accreditation after the autonomy process was kick-started, before sending the final list to the UGC,” said a senior official.  Colleges which will be given autonomy can frame their own curriculum, prepare question papers, conduct examinations and submit the mark lists to the University. The University will approve it and grant degree and diploma to candidates recommended by the colleges.  However, the University to which the colleges are affiliated can cancel or suspend their autonomy and impose fines in case any irregularities are detected or in case of any violation of UGC norms.  The rules governing the Universities are in for an amendment as a separate charter for autonomous colleges will have to be incorporated. Colleges will have to set up their own governing and academic councils, board of studies and finance committees which till now existed only in varsities. Autonomous colleges will also have their own Controller of Examinations.
