Hong Kong - ECONOMIC OVERVIEW
Hong Kong has a free market economy, highly dependent on international
trade and finance - the value of goods and services trade, including the
sizable share of re-exports, is about four times GDP. Hong Kong has no tariffs
on imported goods, and it levies excise duties on only four commodities,
whether imported or produced locally: hard alcohol, tobacco, hydrocarbon oil,
and methyl alcohol. There are no quotas or dumping laws. Hong Kong's open
economy left it exposed to the global economic slowdown that began in 2008.
Although increasing integration with China, through trade, tourism, and
financial links, helped it to make an initial recovery more quickly than many
observers anticipated, its continued reliance on foreign trade and investment
leaves it vulnerable to renewed global financial market volatility or a
slowdown in the global economy. The Hong Kong government is promoting the
Special Administrative Region (SAR) as the site for Chinese renminbi (RMB)
internationalization. Hong Kong residents are allowed to establish
RMB-denominated savings accounts; RMB-denominated corporate and Chinese
government bonds have been issued in Hong Kong; and RMB trade settlement is
allowed. The territory far exceeded the RMB conversion quota set by Beijing for
trade settlements in 2010 due to the growth of earnings from exports to the
mainland. RMB deposits grew to roughly 12% of total system deposits in Hong
Kong by the end of 2013. The government is pursuing efforts to introduce
additional use of RMB in Hong Kong financial markets and is seeking to expand
the RMB quota. The mainland has long been Hong Kong's largest trading partner,
accounting for about half of Hong Kong's total trade by value. Hong Kong's
natural resources are limited, and food and raw materials must be imported. As
a result of China's easing of travel restrictions, the number of mainland
tourists to the territory has surged from 4.5 million in 2001 to 34.9 million
in 2012, outnumbering visitors from all other countries combined. Hong Kong has
also established itself as the premier stock market for Chinese firms seeking
to list abroad. In 2012 mainland Chinese companies constituted about 46.6% of
the firms listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange and accounted for about 57.4%
of the Exchange's market capitalization. During the past decade, as Hong Kong's
manufacturing industry moved to the mainland, its service industry has grown
rapidly. Credit expansion and tight housing supply conditions have caused Hong
Kong property prices to rise rapidly; consumer prices increased by more than 4%
in 2013. Lower and middle income segments of the population are increasingly
unable to afford adequate housing. Hong Kong continues to link its currency
closely to the US dollar, maintaining an arrangement established in 1983. In
2013, Hong Kong and China signed new agreements under the Closer Economic
Partnership Agreement, adopted in 2003 to forge closer ties between Hong Kong
and the mainland. The new measures, effective from January 2014, cover services
and trade facilitation, and will improve access to the mainland's service
sector for Hong Kong-based companies.

Bayer MaterialScience is a renowned supplier of high-tech polymers and develops innovative product solutions for a wide variety of everyday uses.
Bayer MaterialScience’s famous products are coating raw materials bearing the brandnames of “Bayhydrol®” and “Bayhydur®”. High-grade “Makrolon®”, “Makrofol®” and “Apec®” polycarbonates, together with the “Bayblend®” and “Makroblend®” polycarbonate blends, rank among Bayer MaterialScience’s best-sellers. These products are indispensable when it comes to the production of automotive components, data carriers such as CDs and DVDs, and a large number of other everyday items. The key product brands of Polyurethanes are “Desmodur®” and “Desmophen®”. Resins under the brand names “Desmopan®” and “Texin®” are used in technical films and textile coatings, belts, hoses, cables and profiles, in the automotive sector (interior, exterior, and chassis), in a multitude of applications in sports and leisure (e.g. ski and sport shoes and sport equipment), etc.
With 2013 sales of €11.2 billion (2012: €11.5 billion), decreased by 2.6%, Bayer Sales of the MaterialScience subgroup decreased in 2013 by 2.6% to €11.2 billion from €11.5 billion in 2012.
For the 9 months ended 30th September, 2014 the sales of MaterialScience amounted to €8,703 million (same period of 2013: €8,547 million); EBIT for the period was €512 million (same period of 2013: €365 million). The sales and EBIT of MaterialScience have been increasing. Its sales and EBIT will further increase in the years ahead as its China marketing has been expanding.
MaterialScience, with its high-tech polymer materials and application solutions, is helping to address the challenges posed by population growth, the depletion of fossil resources, climate change, greater mobility and increasing urbanization. The Group is continuing to develop its product portfolio, which mainly comprises components for polyurethane foams, high-tech polycarbonate plastics and raw materials for coatings and adhesives.
Against this background, MaterialScience is targeting long-term, profitable growth. It aims to sustainably earn a premium on its capital costs and thus help to increase corporate value. We intend to safeguard or expand its leading competitive positions in world markets in a challenging environment. This applies particularly to emerging economies such as China, India, Brazil and Russia.
Concerning China, Bayer MaterialScience maintains one of its largest production sites that has been strengthened with capital expenditures of more than EUR 2 billion through 2012. This move is followed by an additional investment program of roughly one billion euros in the upcoming years, increasing annual polycarbonate capacities by 300,000 tons to 500,000 tons.
But Bayer MaterialScience will also be expanding production capacities for other raw materials at its Shanghai site. One of these is MDI, which is used to produce foam for climate-friendly thermal insulation, for example. Here, the company plans to double annual capacity to one million tons, thereby setting a new standard in the industry. This is in line with growth rates in the Chinese market which are expected to become double-digit in the next few years.
In 2015, the Greater China region is expected to be the dominant market for the company with sales rising from EUR 1.8 billion to 3 billion within five years – an average annual increase of 11 per cent.
So it is only logical that the headquarters of the Polycarbonates Division has relocated from Leverkusen in Germany to Shanghai and that Bayer MaterialScience should intensify its research activities there. The areas of focus will also include wind and solar power – very much in line with the country’s new environmental targets.
On 31st December, 2013 Bayer had 113,200 employees worldwide, 107,700 of whom had permanent employment contracts, while 5,500 had temporary contracts. There were 14,300 employees in MaterialScience.
The subject is fully supported by Bayer MaterialScience and ultimately by Bayer. History in Hong Kong is about seventeen years.
On the whole, in view of the parentage and background of the subject, consider it good for normal business engagements.
