HISTORY

Caritas Hospital foundation stone laid by H. E Cardinal Tiserang in the presence of Mar Thomas Tharayil on 27th November 1953. The site of the hospital about six acres in area was donated by late Mr. Joseph Vallapally's wife and children. Caritas Hospital Established in 1962 by Mar Thomas Tharayil, Bishop of Kottayam, in collaboration with the selected few benevolent German people with just 50 beds. The prime aims Maternity care and Snake bite management. Dr. Peter Rohde MD from Germany was the first Doctor. Inefficiency of the system, deficiency of proper planning, lack of true commitment and above all, wide spread corruption, have led to the deplorable situation that the health mission of 'CARITAS HOSPITAL' has to play a vital role in alleviating pain of the sick and the suffering, especially to those who cannot afford adequate treatment. Spread over 23 acres of scenic hinterlands, CARITAS is the embodiment of modern medical care.

 

 

MANAGEMENT

 

CARITAS HOSPITAL TRUST

 

The whole Hospital concern is registered as a Charitable Trust under the Kerala trust act of 1960 by name CARITAS HOSPITAL TRUST with has a registration No.510/IV/1995. The trust renders dedicated and valuable contributions to medical education and in training students according to the progressive academic standards keeping in-mind the particular emphasis towards providing medical care in and around Kottayam district and surrounding rural areas of nearby districts.

 

 

 

 

THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES

 

The Board of Trustees of the Caritas Hospital Trust is the apex Body of Caritas Hospital, Thellakom. It convenes at least once a year or as and when required. Advisory Board of Caritas Hospital is constituted by the Patron of the Hospital Trust and Metropolitan Archbishop of Kottayam to give counsel to the Board of Directors on important issues. The Advisory Board also assists the Director in his responsibilities in organizing the day to day working of the institution according to the policy and directions laid down by the Board of trustees. It is convenes twice in a year.

 

 

MILE STONES

 

·         Caritas Hospital Established in 1962 by Mar Thomas Tharayil, Bishop of Kottayam, in collaboration with the selected few benevolent German people with just 50 beds. The prime aims Maternity care and Snake bite management. Dr. Peter Rohde MD from Germany was the first Doctor.

·         Caritas School of Nursing was founded in 1965 by Bishop Mar Thomas Tharayil. The School provides 3˝ year General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) course with a strength of 50 students in each batch.

·         Kerala's first Dialysis Unit started in Caritas Hospital

·         Caritas College of Pharmacy, started in 1981, Caritas College of Pharmacy situates within the premise of Caritas Hospital and it was established in 23rd March 1987 under the eminent guidance and vision of his excellency Mar Kuriakose Kunnussery, the Bishop of Kottayam. D.Pharm course conducted with an intake of 60 students per year.

·         Shalom Hostel started in 1994 for Hospital staffs & Pharmacy College Students.

·         Caritas Hospital Trust has been registered in 1995 as a Public Charitable Trust with Reg. No.510/IV/1995.

·         Bishop Tharayil block (BT Block) constructed in 1997. It has almost a hundred rooms and wards, in six floors

·         B.Sc. Nursing Programme started in December 2002 for the BSc Nursing course and has an intake of 50 students per year. Honorable Former President of India laid the foundation stone for the construction of its esteemed building in 2002.

·         Caritas Cancer Institute inaugurated on February 24, 2003. It is a 82-bedded centre with Medical, Surgical and Radiation Oncology departments as well as a Pain and Palliative Care division. The centre is equipped with two linear accelerators for radiation teletherapy. Dr. Mary Kalapurakal, the head of the pain & palliative Dep. in caritas is the founder & 1st president of palliative assossiation in Kottayam district.

·         Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing Course started in 2005 with 25 seats.

·         Deavamatha Hostel started in 2006 for Nursing College Students.

·         Caritas College of Nursing affiliated is declared as a Minority Educational Institution as per F.NO.235 of 2006 dated December 11, 2007.

·         In 2008 Bishop Makil block (BM Block) was inaugurated and it  has hundred and thirty pay ward rooms, seven operating theatres, and modernized facilities for obstetrics & gynecology, cardiothoracic surgery, centralized intensive care unit, modernized laboratory, and blood bank.

·         Caritas Heart Institute was inaugurated by Shri Oommen Chandy, Hon'ble Chief Minister of Kerala and blessed by Mar Mathew Moolakkatt, Metropolitan Archbishop of Kottayam on 24 September 2011. It has South india's First Hybrid CathLab, Two state of the art Operation Theaters, 24 bedded Cardic Intensive Care Unit, 14 bedded post-operative ICU, Hi-end Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory & Well equipped 24 hours mobile emergency.
