CANADA - ECONOMIC OVERVIEW
Canada resembles the US in its market-oriented economic system, pattern
of production, and high living standards. Since World War II, the impressive
growth of the manufacturing, mining, and service sectors has transformed the
nation from a largely rural economy into one primarily industrial and urban.
Canada has a large oil and natural gas sector with the majority of crude oil
production derived from oil sands in the western provinces, especially Alberta.
Canada now ranks third in the world in proved oil reserves behind Venezuela and
Saudi Arabia and is the worlds sixth-largest oil producer.
The 1989 Canada-US Free Trade Agreement and the 1994 North American Free
Trade Agreement (which includes Mexico) dramatically increased trade and
economic integration between the US and Canada. Canada and the US enjoy the
worlds most comprehensive and highly balanced bilateral trade and investment
relationship, with merchandise trade of $544 billion in 2016, services trade of
over $80 billion, and two-way investment stocks of nearly $700 billion. Over
three-fourths of Canadas exports are destined for the US each year. Canada is
the largest foreign supplier of energy to the US, including oil, natural gas,
and electric power, and a top source of US uranium imports.
Given its abundant natural resources, highly skilled labor force, and
modern capital stock, Canada enjoyed solid economic growth from 1993 through 2007.
The global economic crisis of 2007-08 moved the Canadian economy into sharp
recession by late 2008, and Ottawa posted its first fiscal deficit in 2009
after 12 years of surplus. Canada's major banks emerged from the financial
crisis of 2008-09 among the strongest in the world, owing to the financial
sector's tradition of conservative lending practices and strong capitalization.
Since the fall in world oil prices in 2014, Canada has achieved modest economic
growth.

flaxseed, and corn germ into vegetable oils and meals. PRODUCTS AND SERVICES: Food Supplements Animal Nutrition Fuel Industrials Logistics Farmer Services Financial Services Agricultural Services The Agricultural Services
segment utilizes its extensive global grain elevator and transportation
networks, and port operations to buy, store, clean, and transport
agricultural commodities, such as oilseeds, corn, wheat, milo, oats, rice,
and barley, and resells these commodities primarily as food and feed
ingredients and as raw materials for the agricultural processing industry.
The Agricultural Services segment includes international agricultural
commodities merchandising and handling activities managed through a global
trade desk based in Rolle, Switzerland. Agricultural Services grain
sourcing, handling, and transportation network provides reliable and
efficient services to the Companys customers and agricultural processing
operations. Agricultural Services transportation network capabilities
include barge, ocean-going vessel, truck, rail, and container freight
services. The Agricultural Services segment also includes the activities
related to structured trade finance and the processing of wheat into wheat
flour. Corn Processing The Companys Corn Processing
segment is engaged in corn wet milling and dry milling activities, utilizing
its asset base primarily located in the central part of the United States
with additional facilities in China, Bulgaria, Morocco, and Turkey. The Corn
Processing segment converts corn into sweeteners, starches, and bioproducts.
Its products include ingredients used in the food and beverage industry
including sweeteners, starch, syrup, glucose, and dextrose. Dextrose and
starch are used by the Corn Processing segment as feedstocks for its
bioproducts operations. By fermentation of dextrose, the Corn Processing
segment produces alcohol, amino acids, and other food and animal feed
ingredients. Ethyl alcohol is produced by the Company for industrial use as
ethanol or as beverage grade. Ethanol, in gasoline, increases octane and is
used as an extender and oxygenate. Bioproducts also include essential amino
acids such as lysine and threonine used in swine and poultry diets to
optimize performance. Corn gluten feed and meal, as well as distillers

Patents |
We have not found registered patents for Adm Agri-Industries Company. However,
we found the following patents for Archer Daniels Midland Company (USA): Alcoholic Xylose Fermentation at High Temperatures
by the Thermotolerant Yeast Hansenula polymorpha Publication number: 20130084616 Abstract: Methods and compositions for the
production of ethanol from lignocellulosic starting materials are provided
herein. Embodiments provide yeast cells of the genus H. polymorpha with one
or more modifications, including, for example, an inactive acid trehalase
gene, overexpression of xylulokinase, and/or overexpression of heat-shock
protein 104. Type: Application Filed: November 16, 2012 Publication date: April 4, 2013 Applicant: Archer Daniels Midland Company Inventor: Archer Daniels Midland Company Process for removal of dissolved components from
solution Patent number: 6432315 Abstract: A process for removal of dissolved
components of a liquid solution containing multiple components is provided.
The process relates to the addition of granular cationic starch to the liquid
solution, heating the resultant mixture to gelatinize the starch and form a
starch/component(s) complex, and separating the complex from the liquid.
Alternatively, the starch may be pre-gelatinized and added to the liquid
solution. Type: Grant Filed: October 10, 2000 Date of Patent: August 13, 2002 Assignee: Archer-Daniels-Midland Company Inventor: James J. Foster Flowable dry nutritive mixture and process for its
manufacture Patent number: 6403143 Abstract: The present invention relates to dry,
flowable nutritive supplement mixtures and to processes for their
manufacture. The mixtures of the invention provide liquid nutritive
supplements, containing, for example, one or more amino acids, in an organic
carrier. The organic carriers of the invention are preferably high-fiber
and/or proteinaceous compositions, such as protein byproducts (soybean feed,
for example). The process for making the mixtures of the invention involves
mixing the liquid nutritive supplements and the organic carrier under
controlled conditions for absorption of the supplement into the carrier,
followed by multiple or continuous additions of a reactive metal oxide, to
produce the dry, flowable nutritive supplement products. Type: Grant Filed: October 11, 2000 Date of Patent: June 11, 2002 Assignee: Archer-Daniels-Midland Company Inventors: Basil D. Bevans, L. Dwain Bunting, Dan S.
Hickman Method of making isoidide Patent number: 9340552 Abstract: Disclosed is a process for the preparation
of isoidide from isosorbide. An aqueous solution of isosorbide is subjected
to epimerization in the presence of hydrogen under the influence of a
catalyst comprising ruthenium on a support, preferably a carbon support. The
process of the invention can be conducted using a relatively low hydrogen
pressure, and leads to a desired distribution of epimers, favoring isoidide
over isomannide and isosorbide. Type: Grant Filed: February 19, 2013 Date of Patent: May 17, 2016 Assignee: Archer Daniels Midland Company Inventors: Erik Hagberg, Kevin Martin, Jerome Le
Notre, Daniel Stephan van Es, Jacobus van Haveren, Jan van Ee Hydrogenation with copper compositions catalyst Patent number: 7491820 Abstract: Copper compositions that are useful as hydrogenation
catalysts are disclosed. In particular, the copper compounds are catalysts
for the selective hydrogenation of oils that contain unsaturated fatty acyl
components such as unsaturated vegetable oils. Methods of preparing the
copper compositions are also disclosed. Methods of hydrogenating unsaturated
compositions that contain at least two sites of unsaturation using the
hydrogenation catalysts, along with products obtained from the hydrogenation
reactions described herein are also disclosed. Type: Grant Filed: April 20, 2006 Date of Patent: February 17, 2009 Assignee: Archer-Daniels-Midland Company Inventor: Ronald T. Sleeter Production of isoflavone enriched fractions from soy
protein extracts Patent number: 5702752 Abstract: The temperature sensitive differential of
the solubilities of isoflavones is used to separate them by heating an
aqueous soy molasses feed stream. The temperature of the feed stream is
increased to select isoflavone fractions. Then the heated feed stream is
passed through an ultrafiltration membrane. The resulting permeate is cooled
to crystallize the isoflavone fractions. Or, the permeate may be put through
a resin adsorption process in a liquid-chromatography column to separate out
the desired isoflavone fractions. Various processes are described for drying
and recrystallizing the resulting isoflavone solids. Type: Grant Filed: March 13, 1996 Date of Patent: December 30, 1997 Assignee: Archer Daniels Midland Company Inventors: Eric T. Gugger, Daniel G. Dueppen Reactive oil/copper preservative systems for wood
products Publication number: 20050003190 Abstract: The specification describes preserved
solid wood or wood composites including a copper ammonium acetate complex
wood preservative and a drying oil. The wood preservative is present in the
wood in an amount effective to improve the resistance of the treated wood to
at least one type of decomposition, such as decay or insect attack. The
drying oil is present in the wood in an effective amount to accomplish at
least one useful end, such as reducing the water absorption or thickness
swell of the treated wood or increasing its mechanical strength, even in a
wood composite made using less binding resin than usual. Yet another aspect
of the invention is a method of making the treated wood from green wood in
solid or flaked form. A copper ammonium acetate complex wood preservative and
optionally a drying oil are added to the green wood. Type: Application Filed: February 2, 2004 Publication date: January 6, 2005 Applicants: Archer Daniels Midland Company, Chemical
Specialities, Inc. Inventors: Kenneth Roos, Kevin Archer Production of isoflavone enriched fractions from soy
protein extracts Patent number: 5792503 Abstract: The temperature sensitive differential of the

soy molasses feed stream. The temperature of the feed stream is increased to
select an isoflavone. Then the heated feed stream is passed through an
ultrafiltration membrane. The resulting permeate is cooled to crystallize the
isoflavone. Or, the permeate may be put through a resin adsorption process in
a liquid-chromatography column to separate out the desired isoflavone.
Various processes are described for drying and recrystallizing the resulting
isoflavone solids. Type: Grant Filed: June 4, 1997 Date of Patent: August 11, 1998 Assignee: Archer Daniels Midland Company Inventors: Eric T. Gugger, Daniel G. Dueppen Hold cover for a vehicle especially one for
transporting particulate matter Patent number: 5380058 Abstract: A barge cover is wound on a roller,
mounted on a trolley which may be moved from one end to the other end of a
barge hold, deploying or taking up the cover as it moves. The cover may then
be sealed around the barge coaming in a weather proof manner. The roller is
mounted on trolleys so that two men may deploy or take up the cover with only
their muscle power, without requiring either special docking facilities or an
independent power source. Type: Grant Filed: April 8, 1993 Date of Patent: January 10, 1995 Assignee: Archer Daniels Midland Company Inventors: Rodney A. Short, Daniel T. Dunn, John D.
Cook, William O. Boyd STABILIZED FLEXIBLE PVC COMPOSITIONS AND ARTICLES
MADE THEREFROM Publication number: 20150183954 Abstract: Plasticized, unpigmented and pigmented PVC
films are described which utilize a biobased, phthalate ester alternative
primary plasticizer. The films show comparable color performance to the
phthalate ester-plasticized unpigmented or pigmented PVC films, even where
the neat biobased plasticizer has a much higher PtCo color as measured
according to DIN-6271 (ASTM D 1209) compared to the neat phthalate ester
plasticizer. Biobased primary plasticizers in the form of diesters of
furan-2,5-dicarboxylic acid are especially contemplated, and provide
increased thermal stability to the PVC films as an added benefit. Type: Application Filed: June 4, 2013 Publication date: July 2, 2015 Applicants: STICHTING DIENST LANDBOUWKUNDIG
ONDERZOEK, ARCHER DANIELS MIDLAND COMPANY Inventors: Daniel Stephen VanEs, Jacobus VanHaveren,
Augustinus Emmanuel Frissen, Johannes Cornelis VandeKolk Reactive oil/copper preservative systems for wood
products Patent number: 6686056 Abstract: The specification describes preserved
solid wood or wood composites including a copper ammonium acetate complex
wood preservative and a drying oil.
Type: Grant Filed: September 20, 2002 Date of Patent: February 3, 2004 Assignees: Chemical Specialties, Inc., Archer
