Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) is a national institute for space and allied science which is mainly supported by Department of Space and Government of India (GOI).

 

PRL also manages Udaipur Solar Observatory which is located in Ahmedabad.

 

It was founded by Dr. Vikram Sarabhai on 11th November 1947 and the research laboratory has ongoing research programmes in astronomy and astrophysics, atmospheric sciences and aeronomy, earth sciences, solar system studies and theoretical physics.

 

It was initially set up as M.G Science Institute with supported of Karmkshetra Educational Foundation and the Ahmedabad Education Society.

 

Mr. Anil Bhardwaj is the current director of the PRL and ISRO honoured him with the Outstanding Achievement Award in 2017. He also worked at NASA as a Marshall Space Flight Centre.   

 

Rating takes into consideration the PRL’s long established track record of business operations along with healthy funds base and good liquidity position.

 

Rating also takes into account the strong financial support received from GOI and extensive experience of its founders.

History:

 

1947 - Founded in 1947 by Dr. Vikram A. Sarabhai, the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) had a modest beginning at his residence, the RETREAT, with research on Cosmic Rays.

 

1947 - The Laboratory was formally established on November 11, 1947, in the M. G. Science College, Ahmedabad, with support from the Karmkshetra Educational Foundation and the Ahmedabad Education Society. The initial focus was research on Cosmic Rays and the properties of the Upper Atmosphere. Research in Theoretical Physics and Radio Physics were added later with grants from the Atomic Energy Commission.

AWARDS

 

Hari Om Ashram Prerit Senior Scientist Award – 2016



The Physical Research Laboratory invites nominations for the Hari Om Ashram Prerit Senior Scientist Award for the year - 2016 instituted to commemorate the Birth Centenary of Pujya Shri Mota, Founder of the Hari Om Ashram, Nadiad

 

The award is presented to an eminent Indian Scientist for his/her innovative and outstanding contributions in Science & Technology and is given once every two years. The award consists of a Silver Plaque, a Citation and a Cash Prize of INR 0.200 Million.

 

The nomination should include a brief biodata of the nominee along with a summary highlighting his/her scientific contributions and achievements and should be sent to the Director, Physical Research Laboratory, Navrangpura, Ahmedabad - 3800 009.

 

The last date for receiving nominations for the Award of 2016 is 31st May 2017.

 

Buti Foundation Award

 

Nominations are invited for the biennial “Buti Foundation Award” in the field of Plasma Science & Technology. This award was instituted in 2007 from endowment fund provided by Buti Foundation, New Delhi. The award this year will be given to a person below 45 years as on 1st January 2017 (born on or after 02.01.1972) for innovative and outstanding research work done in India in the field of Plasma Science and Technology. The Award carries a Citation, a Medal and Cash Prize of INR 0.050 Million.

Nomination form along with documents, (as listed in items (a) to (f) above) also needs to be submitted via e-mail to bfa[At]prl[Dot]res[Dot]in on or before May 31, 2017. The selections for the year 2017 will be completed by the second quarter of the year 2017 and the awards will be presented in November 2017.

 

Re-nominations of the nominees for the years 2015 and 2013, subject to their fulfilling the age eligibility, may be done by making a fresh nomination as per the above criteria and guidelines.

Hari Om Ashram Prerit Vikram Sarabhai Research Award

 

Nominations are invited for the Shri Hari Om Ashram Prerit Dr. Vikram Sarabhai Research Awards, 2017, established from funds provided by Pujya Shri Mota of Hari Om Ashram, Nadiad and PRL Award, 2017, instituted by late Prof. Devendra Lal, former Director of PRL. The awards, given in alternate years, consist of a cash prize of INR 0.050 Million and a medal and will be given to outstanding Indian Scientists, who are below 45 years of age (born on or after 2.1.1972), as on 1st January, 2017 for their original work in the following fields:

 

 

Hari Om Awards, one each in the following four disciplines:

 

Space Sciences (including Astronomy, Astrophysics, Planetary and Atmospheric Sciences).

 

Space Applications (in the areas of Meteorology, Hydrology, Remote Sensing and related Ground Truths).

Electronics, Informatics, Telematics and Automation.

 

Systems Analysis or Management, including non-linear, non-equilibrium systems in natural and social sciences and technology.

 

PRL Award for innovative theoretical and or experimental studies in earth and planetary systems, including areas of oceanography, atmospheric sciences and meteorology.

 

Guidelines for submission of nomination:

 

Nominations are to be submitted in the prescribed format and should include;


Two copies of the nomination to be submitted with a CD containing all documents including nomination proforma in ‘MS-word’ format. Please enclose the following documents with the nomination:

 

Significant contributions to the area of specialization by the nominee (two pages) during his/her research career.

Impact of the contributions in the field concerned, basic and/or applied.

 

Specific contributions for which the nomination is being made Complete list of Publications (with the names of authors in the order in which they appear in the publications).

Although the overall work of the candidates would be taken into account, the work done in India would be given prime consideration. The selections for the year 2017 is likely to be completed by the second quarter of the year 2018.
