  • Endowment grants
  • Small grants
  • Individual grants

ABOUT SIR RATAN TATA TRUST

Sir Ratan Tata Trust (SRTT) is one of the oldest philanthropic institutions in India. It was set up in 1919 in accordance with the will of Sir Ratan Tata, the younger son of Tata group Founder Jamsetji Tata, a year after his demise.

An altruist, Sir Ratan Tata constantly endeavoured for social change. During his lifetime, he supported several institutions and various deserving causes. After his demise in 1918 and as per his will, the bulk of his wealth went into the Sir Ratan Tata Trust, which was established with a corpus of INR 8.000 million, to further Sir Ratan Tata's vision of building a self-sufficient nation through the advancement of education, learning and industry. The Navajbai Ratan Tata Trust, formed in 1974, in memory of Sir Ratan Tata’s wife Navajbai, and the Tata Education and Development Trust, formed in 2008, embody a similar approach in their endeavor to enhance lives of the marginalised, whilst ensuring national development. The other allied trusts are the Sarvajanik Seva Trust and Bai Hirabai J. N. Tata Navsari Charitable Institution.

The Trusts implement initiatives for the communities and also support development initiatives by partnering with civil society organisations in the areas of education, health, rural livelihoods and communities, arts, craft and culture, and civil society and governance. Apart from bestowing institutional grants, the Trusts also support individuals through grants for education and medical relief.

The Trusts have always strived to bring about sustainable change in the lives of the marginalised communities of the nation. In many ways, the Trusts are responsible for transforming traditional notions of charity in the country.

 ABOUT SIR RATAN TATA

Sir Ratan Tata is the younger son of Jamsetji Tata, the Tata group Founder. He was born on January 20, 1871. Following in the footsteps of his father, Sir Ratan Tata devoted his efforts to various philanthropic initiatives to develop the resources of the nation. Despite his elite upbringing, he empathised with the underprivileged sections of society. There are many accounts that bear testimony to his benevolence.

He made generous donations towards Gopal Krishna Gokhale’s Servants of India Society and Mahatma Gandhi’s movement against apartheid in South Africa. Sir Ratan Tata donated liberally for the relief of distress caused by natural calamities, and for public memorials, schools and hospitals. He funded India’s first archeological excavation at Pataliputra, which led to the discovery of King Ashoka’s throne room.

A connoisseur of art, he bequeathed a large number of artifacts from his personal collection to Mumbai’s Prince of Wales Museum (now known as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya). He also instituted a chair for investigation and research into causes of destitution and poverty at the London School of Economics (LSE). The Sir Ratan Tata Foundation is now a permanent institution at the LSE.

In 1892, Sir Ratan Tata married Navajbai Sett. He was knighted for his services to humanity in 1916. The fact that he willed a large part of his property for charitable activities speaks volumes about his largesse. The Sir Ratan Tata Trust was established in 1919 with a corpus of INR 8.000 million. Today it is one of India’s oldest and most respected philanthropic organisations.

BOARD OF TRUSTEES

RATAN N TATA

Mr Ratan N Tata is the Chairman of the Tata Trusts (comprising Sir Ratan Tata Trust and Allied Trusts, and the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and Allied Trusts). Under his guidance and leadership, the Trusts have metamorphosed from being reactive charities to India’s premier philanthropic foundations, striving to transform lives of millions of individuals, through meaningful partnerships with like-minded non-profit organisations, communities, governments (state and central), corporates and foreign funding organisations.

Mr Ratan N Tata was the Chairman of Tata Sons, the holding company of the Tata group, from 1991 till his retirement on December 28, 2012. During his tenure, the group’s revenues grew manifold, totalling over $100 billion in 2011-12. After retirement, Mr Tata has been conferred the honorary title of Chairman Emeritus of Tata Sons, Tata Industries, Tata Motors, Tata Steel and Tata Chemicals.

Mr Tata was the chairman of major Tata companies, including Tata Motors, Tata Steel, Tata Consultancy Services, Tata Power, Tata Global Beverages, Tata Chemicals, Indian Hotels and Tata Teleservices. He is also associated with various organisations in India and overseas. Mr Tata serves on the board of directors of Alcoa and is also on the international advisory boards of Mitsubishi Corporation, JP Morgan Chase, Rolls-Royce and the Monetary Authority of Singapore.

He is the Chairman of the Sir Ratan Tata Trust and Allied Trusts, and the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and the Allied Trusts. He is the Chairman of the Council of Management of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research. He also serves on the board of trustees of Cornell University and the University of Southern California.

Mr Tata joined the Tata group in 1962. After serving in various companies, he was appointed Director-in-Charge of the National Radio and Electronics Company in 1971. In 1981, he was named Chairman of Tata Industries, the group’s other holding company, where he was responsible for transforming it into a group strategy think tank and a promoter of new ventures in high-technology businesses.

Mr Tata received his bachelor of architecture degree from Cornell University in 1962. He worked briefly with Jones and Emmons in Los Angeles before returning to India in late 1962. He completed the Advanced Management Programme at Harvard Business School in 1975.

The Government of India honoured Mr Tata with its second-highest civilian award, the Padma Vibhushan, in 2008. He has also received honorary doctorates from several universities in India and overseas.
