CANADA - ECONOMIC OVERVIEW
Canada resembles the US in its market-oriented economic
system, pattern of production, and high living standards. Since World War II, the
impressive growth of the manufacturing, mining, and service sectors has
transformed the nation from a largely rural economy into one primarily
industrial and urban. Canada has a large oil and natural gas sector with the
majority of crude oil production derived from oil sands in the western
provinces, especially Alberta. Canada now ranks third in the world in proved
oil reserves behind Venezuela and Saudi Arabia and is the world’s sixth-largest
oil producer.
The 1989 Canada-US Free Trade Agreement and the 1994 North
American Free Trade Agreement (which includes Mexico) dramatically increased
trade and economic integration between the US and Canada. Canada and the US
enjoy the world’s most comprehensive and highly balanced bilateral trade and
investment relationship, with merchandise trade of $544 billion in 2016,
services trade of over $80 billion, and two-way investment stocks of nearly
$700 billion. Over three-fourths of Canada’s exports are destined for the US
each year. Canada is the largest foreign supplier of energy to the US,
including oil, natural gas, and electric power, and a top source of US uranium
imports.
Given its abundant natural resources, highly skilled labor
force, and modern capital stock, Canada enjoyed solid economic growth from 1993
through 2007. The global economic crisis of 2007-08 moved the Canadian economy
into sharp recession by late 2008, and Ottawa posted its first fiscal deficit
in 2009 after 12 years of surplus. Canada's major banks emerged from the
financial crisis of 2008-09 among the strongest in the world, owing to the
financial sector's tradition of conservative lending practices and strong
capitalization. Since the fall in world oil prices in 2014, Canada has achieved
modest economic growth.

Cadex Electronics Inc. Will Unveil an Innovative New Technology to
Rapid-Test Smartphone Batteries
Aug 25 16
Cadex Electronics Inc. will unveil an innovative new technology to
rapid-test smartphone batteries at the CTIA Super Mobility 2016 in Las
Vegas. Built into the C5100-B storefront battery analyzer, QuickSort 4
(QS4) no longer requires model specific data as QS3 did. In addition, the
capacity range of the patent pending QS4 has been expanded to service
single cell Li-ion batteries of up to 4,000mAh. The 4-minute test provides
clear results of 'Good' or 'Bad' and is compatible with Apple and Samsung
smartphone batteries. PC-BatteryStore software offers an extension to
battery service by storing customer information, recording anomalies and
printing service reports. The company can export test results, make notes
and compare with existing data.

Method and apparatus for battery testing
Patent number: 7019542
Abstract: A method for testing electrochemical cells applies to a portion
of a cycle of a low-frequency excitation waveform to a cell under test
while maintaining an amplitude of the excitation waveform below a threshold
value. In some cases a quarter cycle of the excitation waveform is used.
Phase an amplitude of a response to the excitation waveform may be
determined by applying formulae based on geometry.

Inventor: Joern A. Tinnemeyer
Multiple model systems and methods for testing electrochemical systems
Patent number: 6778913
Abstract: A method for testing an electrochemical system includes obtaining
complex impedance data for the electrochemical system at multiple
frequencies; fitting the complex impedance data to two or more models of
the system to obtain a set of fitted parameters; and deriving a value for a
characteristic of the electrochemical system based upon parameters of the
set of fitted parameters. The electrochemical system may be an
electrochemical battery. The characteristic may be a state of health, state
of charge, or other characteristic of a battery.

Pulse-discharge battery testing methods and apparatus
Patent number: 7622929
Abstract: A method for evaluating the conditions a battery comprises
applying a discharge pulse to the battery and monitoring a response of the
battery to the discharge pulse. In some embodiments a measure of battery
condition is based at least in part on at least one of first and second
parameters. The first parameter is related to the decrease in battery
voltage after the onset of the discharge pulse. The second parameter is
related to the recovery of the battery voltage after the discharge pulse.
The first and/or second parameters may be supplied as inputs to an
evaluation system such as a neural network, a fuzzy logic inference engine
or the like.
Type: Grant
Filed: July 25, 2006
Date of Patent: November 24, 2009
Assignee: CADEX Electronics Inc.
